No wonder Russia lost the famous winter war against small but tough Finland in 1939-1940. The way treated and still treat their own soldiers why would they fight for a country like this?? Though, hazing is only a part of the greater problem of neglect. From what I have read and heard, more Soviet soldiers have been killed by hazing, accidents, and other ways of neglect than the total number of killed in action during the Cold War.

When I joined the British Army in 1974 at 16, Junior Leaders Regt. this type of thing was rutine, to weed out the week so they would leave. There were injuries including broken bones. Part of the training.
Why is this a shock to so many people alot of countries do this some even worse than the Russians. Its done for motivation and mental toughness i mean if your scared to get punched in the gut what good would you be against an enemy pointing a gun at you, unlike the US military where the worst that could happen is to do more pushups and get shouted at and look how good theyre fairing against a bunch of armed farmers.

The reality is, that those sergeants who beat these soldiers, are more afraid than those who is punished. They have fear that some day these soldiers just gonna kill them. Beating and keeping these guys in fear is the way for them to keep control, and they believe that this is also the easiest way to stay on top. One of the main roots of this problem comes from nonprofessional of Russian army. Hopefully, something is changing there these days to fix this disaster.

As far as being in a fight, any good fighter will tell you the best strategy is to avoid one. Only the little guys with something to prove try to provoke fights. Also, in the US the army service is voluntary - you see, soldiers are paid for their service and it's voluntary if to go or not to the army! In Russia they still have conscript service!

@November10th1775USMC You know pretty little about the history of Russian/Soviet Army back in 1980s and 1990s! Back in 1990s (the video dates back from 1998) virtually ALL of the Russian army was about 99% conscript! Even including such special forces as VDV, Russian marines, Spetsnaz, etc!

The army is still conscript - that is you HAVE TO go to the army - even if you don't want to, and even if they actually want to go through such kind of hazing! Everyone has to go to the army. However most of guys in Russia try to avoid military service - by paying bribes at recruiting stations and using some other ways not to serve in such kind of the idiotic army!!

When I joined the British Army in 1974 at 16, Junior Leaders Regt. this type of thing was rutine, to weed out the week so they would leave. There were injuries including broken bones. Part of the training.

Why is this a shock to so many people alot of countries do this some even worse than the Russians. Its done for motivation and mental toughness i mean if your scared to get punched in the gut what good would you be against an enemy pointing a gun at you, unlike the US military where the worst that could happen is to do more pushups and get shouted at and look how good theyre fairing against a bunch of armed farmers.

Also, in the US, in Australia - the armies are all voluntary - it's upon your choice if to go to the army or not! In Russia it's still mostly CONSCRIPT army, - it means that according to the Constitution virtually all male population of the country should do military service - whether they want it or not!!!

The reality is, that those sergeants who beat these soldiers, are more afraid than those who is punished. They have fear that some day these soldiers just gonna kill them. Beating and keeping these guys in fear is the way for them to keep control, and they believe that this is also the easiest way to stay on top. One of the main roots of this problem comes from nonprofessional of Russian army. Hopefully, something is changing there these days to fix this disaster.
