@nirbija you are too short sighted nir. This bill MANDATES people buy private insurance. this is a step in the WRONG direction, not a small step closer. It will make private insurance companies even richer, enabling them to lobby even more effectively and make healthcare reform harder later. Not only that but the bill also allows insurance companies to still indirectly deny you coverage by raising your premiums x3 (such that u cant afford it) it needs to be scrapped.
@nirbija again you are short sighted. sure subsidies will help....but they run out. Rather quickly. As for current private insurance plans, yes they work just fine...do you know why? Because there is multple companies providing them. Health insurance companies however are so large they have a virtual monopoly per state. Thats why premiums are so high. Again you dont know the facts, and apparently don't understand capitalism.
@nirbija dude you really gotta take your time and read more carefully. I was referring to car insurance etc plans working just fine not health insurance. I was pointing out the difference between the two. As for monopolies...yes they do gouge customers....the reason canada's single payer doesnt is because its not a monopoly you fool, its socialized. You do know that a monopoly is PRIVATELY held right? Not run by the government. You are just clueless. And foolish
Monopoly essentially means little or NO COMPETITION!
A government entity CAN be a monopoly.
And the point being made is that monopolies in & of themselves CANNOT gouge!
It is the PEOPLE who run the monopoly who may or MANY NOT decide to gouge!
Anyway, since we got health & car, etc private insurances mixed up, & you agree that health insurance is not working, I don't know what you are still bellyaching about? Especially since the health ins companies are losing their gouging monopolies?
@nirbija holy crap....you know nothing of social sciences at all do you? Do you realize that the government isnt a private entity? Its a representation for ALL citizens. In other words ALL citizens own equal portions of said company. its not a monopoly when the government (ie everyone) runs it.
Ps no healthcare companies are strengthening their monopoly. This bill has a mandate that REQUIRES everyone purchase insurance from them. Plus they can triple your premiums (essentially deny u)
@nirbija Dude...are you not listening? A monopoly does not apply to socialization. A monopoly is buy definition an exclusive right to distribute and/or produce. The government BY DEFINITION is the representitive for ALL citizens. Therefore, socialization is in essence giving the rights to ALL citizens equally. Its the exact opposite of a monopoly. With the present healthcare there is NO COMPETITION. There is a state by state monopoly. What is your beef with the public option exactly?
Only, the votes are not there for a public option!
The aim of the trouble making republicons is to create so much heat & smoke that nothing gets done; so that the voters will next time around blame the party in power for not delivering much
And Obama, wisely, wants to avoid the time-wasting disruption & distraction at the present time in order to accomplish something for Americans
I think that you are misreading my pragmatic position on 'need to have the VOTES'! Just having fancy proposals is not enough!
Whatever Rep Grayson is for, I'm on-board.
However, unless the US Senate goes to simple majority on legislation, there are going to be obstacles from the self-loathing & pain in the behind democrats.
There would have been public option & Medicare buy-in, if that traitor lie-berman was a true democrat & not being a sellout to the ins companies in Connecticut
@nirbija if U look at the prefix in the word 'monopoly' you will see that 'mono' means ONE. the only monopolies the government seems to exercise is that of war making and the erosion of our civil liberties with stuff like the Patriot Act. and i must admit they exercise those monopolies like idiots. but when discussing the heath care issue the word monopoly takes on its true meaning: ONE company controlling the market, eliminating choice altogether. that's not capitalism the way i was taught.
@nirbija my guess is that your health care monopoly doesn't gouge because it's controlled by the government and the people. such isn't the case south of your border. here, monopolies gouge precisely because they're not peopled by individuals with a conscience. we will always be many steps behind U because money drives most political debates here, therefore there will be no National Health Care system in my beloved country.
@Trommylee Right! Government-run health care system are inclined to gouge less.
However, such systems tend to be less innovative.
So the trick is to have systems with a balance between innovation and cost containment, while keeping an open eye for the criminals who are always looking practice thievery, BOTH in government and private sector.

@Codger45caliber your comment assumes that even Republicans are interested in governance. that's miles from true. in addition there are plenty of Democrats who wouldn't have voted for the best bill man could create because they're beholden to the insurance/drug companies. the sole agenda of Republicans is to see Obama fail; they have no willingness to even participate in a debate and have input of their own. They are simply 'The Party of NO', nothing more.
@Codger45caliber untrue. If it lowered profits for insurance companies i doubt it would have garnered republican support. republicans bankrupted this country pumping money into...forget it. Read up on crony capitalism. true conservatives/libertarians loath the GOP even more than they do the dems.dems tax and spend for the perceived good of the people wile the GOP borrow and spend for the good of the few. halliburton and blue cross sure ate well during the bush years
I wouldn't want Lieberman to be harmed, but would like the voters in his state to give a nice retirement package (no votes in the next senate election).
yep Obama sucks IMO now... thats not to say he cant make a come back its only the end of the first year but he has a lot of shit to make up for now..losing the health care bill...(after wasting a year on it)...not crippling the republicans who are taking full advantage of the situation bye crippling obama, and oh yeah sending 30k more troops to a now pointless country (afghanistan) and yes its useless to go there now get over it the war has been over for a while we won terroists lost good fight
All this bill will do is throw money away. I'd like to see Obama stand up to his party and get some real reform through. The "supermajority" in the Senate is a curse in disguise, as it creates the illusion of Democratic control. When a Republican breaks the party line, it is news. We need to remember who stood in the way of real health care reform and vote accordingly in the future. All the republicans a handful of dems and Joe Lieberman are a disgrace.
The Rockefeller's (ROTHSCHILD'S agents) own a big piece of the American HEALTH CARE and PHARMA industries and it's VERY profitable. They like it that way. They also own just about every politician in Washington with their political contributions and recruiting including Obama. Things only change when the ROTHSCHILD'S want them to. People R ALREADY buying 'private insurance' for their car, house, pets, you name it!
So to not at least buy private insurance for YOUR OWN SELF is kinda silly, eh?
Now if you want to dump private insurance for house, car, etc, we can agree. lol
Insurance companies are now COMPELLED to pay out higher amount of monies collected; & government subsidy will help with your mandate
I may b 'shortsighted'; but U R blind to the FACTS of present bill, which is ALREADY DIFFICULT to pass!

YES! 'work fine for the greedy thieves who run private insurance', but not fine for millions of Americans some of whom do have insurance!
So-called 'monopolies' DO NOT rob people!
Monopolies DO NOT have consciousness to decide to gouge customers!
People who run private insurance rob people!
The single payer system in Canada, say, IS a monopoly; yet Canadians ARE NOT gouged!

Come on now!
Let's not get too hifalutin with unnecessary appeal 'social sciences' distraction
Just learn the prefix in word 'monopoly' & you will come to understand that monopoly can apply to BOTH government entities and to private entities
With present Health Care Bill, there is MORE COMPETITION; old monopolistic opportunities no longer exist.
Citizens are allowed CHOICES in the health care exchanges; so foolish & greedy executives will easily price themselves out of the market
