  • ah thats mike shaft yeah the guy describing as greg mixes

  • I remember being stood behind Greg inside a giant frog which was the DJ location at Wigan Pier. Greg had 3 (three) decks going with the same 12" and kept chopping them up and mixing in. For some reason I think the tune was appropriately - Last night a DJ saved my life. Before Electro etc. Greg was an accomplished JazzFunk & Soul DJ.

  • A pleasure to watch.

  • 'Drugs? What are those?'

    classic.

  • It's like listening to the Disco MIx Club all over again. Oh the memories.

  • Greg what you did there is timeless,it will never come back on tv oldschool rules, great dj by the way, respect !!!!!

  • Old Greg?

  • How does the reel to reel produce that effect?

Nothing has changed in the past 27 years in terms of new sounds being produced really, it's just been made easier to produce/use and more accessible to the masses (many of whom stupidly think they are hearing sounds that are new).

  • @oviljest A DJ friend of mine in the early 90s had a small unit with 1 record head and something like 8 read heads in a row. The tape runs in a loop and is constantly being recorded to, and he could choose with a dial how many of the read heads to get sound from, so anywhere between 1 to 8 echoes.

  • The first person to own the Technics 1200 MK 2 turntables in the UK was DJ Froggy, he bought them when he was in New York City back in '78 or '79 and had them sent over to England.

  • My name happens to be greg wilson

  • And Greg went on to present a program called Top Gear.

  • this is fantastic man, i teach DJing to people and this vid is a sure fire reference point for all my students, thanks so much

  • DJ mixing. Old school style.

  • hi everyone im djhyper look at my videos comment and press the big yellow button thanks :) musch love for you all

  • Wicked post. I only looked Greg up because I have a mashup of his and wanted to know who he was. I started mixing in 1980 but couldnt afford a pair of 1200's until 1990. Back then I used Dual CS505 turntables and there were no fx in sight and plenty of wobbly mixes.

  • Back to a time when it was rare to know somebody who had decks!!!! Great post.

  • Back to a time when it was rare to know somebody who had decks!!!!!!! Great post.

  • Greg is one of the top guys in the field

  • RIP Francis Grasso

  • love it, big up greg

  • amazing

  • lAXGOLIE4EVER are you for real? Do you realise this was taken 27 years ago in February 1983. Greg Wilson became the first British DJ to mix live on national television, At this point in time mixing had yet to make a major impact on the UK club scene, with only a small minority of British DJs embracing what was still very much regarded as an American approach. Do you research before you make a silly comment like that. Plus anyone can put on a record, its what you play is important. Deary me!

  • @laxgolie4ever Hey anyone today can pickup a turntable and think they are a dj Hero. Listen, can you recreate what Grandmaster Flash did back in the early 80s in a few days, if not then go back to your hole. That took real talent and creativity. I bet your scratches are pathetic and predictable and you couldn't hold a crowds interest for more than 60 seconds with a camera on you in a packed club. Respect the guys and girls that created this for what it is today. Geez.

  • @maccagrabme Apparently you must be very old to not see I was being sarcastic.

  • @laxgolie4ever Yes I'm an antique.

  • haha that host is such a tripper

  • Jesus, didn't realise that Holland was such a knob in his early TV career!!

    Wilson is legend!

  • that is totally sick, and that is a good track

  • Drugs? What are those?

  • Legend Period !!!

  • does anyone know the name of this song???

  • This guy can mix! Some of the DJ's I know have nothing on this guy.

  • Interesting Greg, I saw this in 82 when i was working with Sade in NYC, before you guys picked it up in the UK. We used to watch the kids break dancing in front of the decks on the lower east side. Good work........... like the tape.

  • bahaha Jools

  • legend

  • fucking class!

  • We just saw Greg playing on Sao Paulo's 'Nuit Blanche' party on the last floor of a wonderful building on Paulista Avenue, and I guarantee you it was the same feeling of those amazing parties in the eighties.

I just regret deeply not seeing him play before. ALL his tunes were reworked by him, we're talking about exclusive versions you will never hear again.

  • drugs?? what are those... classic.....

  • Not a lot has changed with Greg Wilson! ... this coulda been last week. This guy has definitely earned his stripes! ... fantastic

  • It sounds like a soccer match. "And there he is on one records again, two records, switches, back again." Greg wilson on the real!

  • ...then you bang them in...

  • Greg Wilson. What a legend!

  • jools is a kleg nut

  • The crowd look genuinely bemused/bored. They're probably thinking: fuck this shit - when are Echo & The Bunnymen on? It would have been good if The Tube producers got a few dozen disco fans in there just for that segment :O)

  • ha take loads of drugs and do loads of echos done that many times

  • Great video...great times. Thanks for the video "Electrofunkrootsuk" *cough cough* and awesome E.M!!

  • i love it that Jools holland a musical genius just doesn't get it at all

  • jools had to ask questions so that the viewers who aren't into music could get it.

  • True but by the way he's acting i think it's more for his benefit.

  • the headphones are fucking wicked.

  • @bphelix

    word

  • The track is 'You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)' by David Jospeh... classic!

  • I can't believe I hadn't heard of this guy until this weekend's essential mix!

Everyone should check it on listen again before it goes. He's still got it and then some. What a star.

  • Just seen him play out at Basement Boogloo in Nottingham.

    Still got it ;)

  • That's proper class

  • those headphones are awesome!!!!!!!!

  • Need the track name...

  • name of the track is, "you can't hide your love" - david joseph...

  • What is tha tract name??

  • amazing piece of history there you have it, 1983 and he's seriously rocking out!

i really miss when djs played with turntables.. and that wasn't so long ago. you had to know how to do it and you had to have your own skills on it.. now with all this automatic cdjs/software bullshit.. ah, who cares anyway. Everything got so fucking boring, static and dead.

  • cool video..

    thanks for that...

  • ha.. nice! those headphones are ill

  • Jools Holland... Such a twat.

  • oops, spoke too soon

  • "Why isn't anyone dancing? lol"

  • Why isn't anyone dancing? lol

  • Wow, Jools Holland.

  • fresh sickness!

  • you can tell Holland dislikes this, the smug sod

  • mike shaft from piccadilly radio manchester was the black guy

  • Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this live on Channel 4 back in 1983. It inspired me a lot.

    A couple of questions.

    1. What mixer is that?

    2. How is the the reel to reel tape recorder connected to the mixer to get the echo effect? (nowadays it would just be a digital effects unit connected to the send and return jacks).

Good to see those Technics SL1200 Mk2 turntables. They are without a doubt an all time design classic.

  • Anyone know who the black geezer is comentating????

  • chrism - if my memory serves me well the black guy is 'mike shaft'. he was a well known 80s soul DJ at the time. i love 80s soul music....beats the crap out of current RnB shite!!!!

  • 20+ years going strong!! Pure FRESHNESS!

  • Mr. Holland is a narrow minded cunt. Afterglow, beatmixings been around since the 70's.

  • classic, rocked the big chill this year...2008

  • he's one of the pioneers, why hate on something that happened in 83' ?

  • I was kidding numb nuts.

  • funny how people have so much balls on the internet. i wasn't even talking sh*t to u in the first place.

  • Tell me about it, I feel like God on here. Must be because I feel underpowered working in Bk hehehe.

But seriously, this was very educating, I didn't think beatmatching existed untill acid house.

  • he was a hacienda DJ!!

  • jools is a fukin berk

  • is this also the first recorded dj mix in which nobody is dancin'?

  • Tune is by DAVID JOSEPH - "You Can't Hide Your Love"

  • stuff of legend

  • Wow, how could you possibly use those headphones to mix with.

  • hahaha, no kidding.

  • dont worry about the headphones, look at the mixer, and look how thick the slip/gripmat is at 2:18

  • Greg used 3 turntables at Legend in M/cr. If my memory serves me correctly he played 3 copies of this track on all 3. The man's a genius. And like many genius's, was way ahead of his time. I was privileged to see him at Legend - how good were those Weds nights eh?

  • If you want to see how far this art has come since then, watch these videos:

    "DJ Woody 2002 Vestax Practice"

    "DJ Woody Flutine"

  • wicked! greg, the dj-ing and the perm are inspirational!

  • excellent! impressive to see those sony headman phones in use as monitors. and greg´s hairdo is top ranking.

  • lol!!! I love the incredulity in Jules voice "Two turntables?"
