does anyone know the name of this song? does he say it's by david joseph? love this video. i've been reading The Hacienda How Not to Run A Club, and had to see this for myself. dam this is so cool.
I remember being stood behind Greg inside a giant frog which was the DJ location at Wigan Pier. Greg had 3 (three) decks going with the same 12" and kept chopping them up and mixing in. For some reason I think the tune was appropriately - Last night a DJ saved my life. Before Electro etc. Greg was an accomplished JazzFunk & Soul DJ.
Nothing has changed in the past 27 years in terms of new sounds being produced really, it's just been made easier to produce/use and more accessible to the masses (many of whom stupidly think they are hearing sounds that are new).
@oviljest A DJ friend of mine in the early 90s had a small unit with 1 record head and something like 8 read heads in a row. The tape runs in a loop and is constantly being recorded to, and he could choose with a dial how many of the read heads to get sound from, so anywhere between 1 to 8 echoes.
The first person to own the Technics 1200 MK 2 turntables in the UK was DJ Froggy, he bought them when he was in New York City back in '78 or '79 and had them sent over to England.
Wicked post. I only looked Greg up because I have a mashup of his and wanted to know who he was. I started mixing in 1980 but couldnt afford a pair of 1200's until 1990. Back then I used Dual CS505 turntables and there were no fx in sight and plenty of wobbly mixes.
lAXGOLIE4EVER are you for real? Do you realise this was taken 27 years ago in February 1983. Greg Wilson became the first British DJ to mix live on national television, At this point in time mixing had yet to make a major impact on the UK club scene, with only a small minority of British DJs embracing what was still very much regarded as an American approach. Do you research before you make a silly comment like that. Plus anyone can put on a record, its what you play is important. Deary me!
@laxgolie4ever Hey anyone today can pickup a turntable and think they are a dj Hero. Listen, can you recreate what Grandmaster Flash did back in the early 80s in a few days, if not then go back to your hole. That took real talent and creativity. I bet your scratches are pathetic and predictable and you couldn't hold a crowds interest for more than 60 seconds with a camera on you in a packed club. Respect the guys and girls that created this for what it is today. Geez.
Interesting Greg, I saw this in 82 when i was working with Sade in NYC, before you guys picked it up in the UK. We used to watch the kids break dancing in front of the decks on the lower east side. Good work........... like the tape.
saw this guy at southport weekender last year, played out the last set .. absolute quality, best set of the whole weekend and this was at 8am - top bloke
We just saw Greg playing on Sao Paulo's 'Nuit Blanche' party on the last floor of a wonderful building on Paulista Avenue, and I guarantee you it was the same feeling of those amazing parties in the eighties.
I just regret deeply not seeing him play before. ALL his tunes were reworked by him, we're talking about exclusive versions you will never hear again.
lucky enough to catch greg at the southport weekender last year, even tho it was 7 in the morning he was the highlight of the weekender - pure class, would love to have made it
to liverpool for the 18th - anyone know what else he is upto ??
The crowd look genuinely bemused/bored. They're probably thinking: fuck this shit - when are Echo & The Bunnymen on? It would have been good if The Tube producers got a few dozen disco fans in there just for that segment :O)
amazing piece of history there you have it, 1983 and he's seriously rocking out!
i really miss when djs played with turntables.. and that wasn't so long ago. you had to know how to do it and you had to have your own skills on it.. now with all this automatic cdjs/software bullshit.. ah, who cares anyway. Everything got so fucking boring, static and dead.
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this live on Channel 4 back in 1983. It inspired me a lot.
A couple of questions.
1. What mixer is that?
2. How is the the reel to reel tape recorder connected to the mixer to get the echo effect? (nowadays it would just be a digital effects unit connected to the send and return jacks).
Good to see those Technics SL1200 Mk2 turntables. They are without a doubt an all time design classic.
chrism - if my memory serves me well the black guy is 'mike shaft'. he was a well known 80s soul DJ at the time. i love 80s soul music....beats the crap out of current RnB shite!!!!
Greg used 3 turntables at Legend in M/cr. If my memory serves me correctly he played 3 copies of this track on all 3. The man's a genius. And like many genius's, was way ahead of his time. I was privileged to see him at Legend - how good were those Weds nights eh?
