Her voice and her english sounds so much like my 40 something year old cousin who came to Canada around 10 years old.
Living in North America, I take for granted that many of us Asians being 2nd, 3rd etc generation speak perfect english. It totally throws me seeing her and Corina Chamberlain speaking perfect Cantonese on youtube. Just weird.
yes chinese may be a difficult language for some to learn, but everyone's learnig potential is different depending on a lot of factors such as desire, educational background, heriditary, surounding environment (friends or others that might encourage or help u to learn), of course natural God given talent, etc.
a foreigner with a powerful chinese computer dictionary can pick up many new words from newspaper or other literary sources. the best is a never say quit attitude even making mistakes.
@Vincenthusky she has spent most of her life in Hong Kong and Macau and holds a HK passport (now PRC of course). If she went to the US or UK she'd be as tourist tongue-tied as any Chinese person, I guess.
there is no such things as easy or difficult, it is relative to the person learning the subject, for example some concepts in organic chemistry may be very hard for me to grasp but for someone from a prestigeous high school or college, it may be relatively simple. nothing is easy or hard, depends alot on background training, childhood rearing, support from friends/family, genetics, strong desire to learn, etc. God blesses her with talents and she is using them.
why are people so impressed because she happens to be white and speaks fluent mandarin, cantonese, etc. if a person put their mind and effort, they can achieve many things and it helps to have a good ear for distinguishing the various tones of the cantonese dialect. are u impressed when chinese people speaks fluent english? don't give me the excuse chinese is a much harder language to learn.
@wangtub43 well when a native in a country where english isn't the official language, and isn't widely spoken, (e.g. CHINA,) i'd be amazed. (mind you i'm chinese.)
at least I feel that her mandarin sound rather Canton, she lack the tone of the mainlander. But above all she speak Cantonese more fluently than she speak english and mandarin
Hi Sharon, I hope you'll read this. I am amazed and awed in many ways. I see the Lord is working through you. Culturally I am somewhat your counterpart here in the US. A string of miracles also happened in my life. Yes He is among us every moment. I hold deep admiration for what you and your family do in the name of the Lord, especially your father. Please give him my regards. God Bless. -Paul
It does not matter if she is caucasian or asian, Sharon is very talented in language skills. I bet if she wants, she can learn and speak French or Italian just as fluently.
Lol her cantonese accent is so strong even in Mandarin ahahah, i'm not a native mandarin speaker but she sounds like a real hong konger trying to speak mandarin!
@lastplacewin i think its actually pretty common for ppl to speak 3 languages fluently without accent at all. Many ppl migrate from hong kong or taiwan at young age (8 or 9 yrso) and can speak canton/taiwanese + mandarin as well as english. I'm one of those ppl and now i'm trying to learn un poco de espanol!!! learning languages is fun :)
Wow Sharon, you speak very good Cantonese and Mandarin, and of course, English. I would say your Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin) is much better than a lot of Chinese. Amazing.
@Jin199132 That's because she is a native Cantonese speaker; she just happens to be not Asian but Caucasian (her parents were missionaries). It is no different when a person of Asian descent is born in a country other their ancestral homeland and learns the native language there, e.g. Asians growing up in the U.S. and speaking English.
Sharon would be the best representative of a beautiful woman from Hong Kong. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin so fluently. Her Cantonese is so perfect, so Hong Kong !!! Amazing !!!
@XieTianXieDi888 I'm a native English speaker and I listen to cantonese and mandarin accents all day. Her accent when speaking English does not sound cantonese. She sounds more Portuguese than anything.
Actually her accent and intonation patterns in English show that she has had more exposure to native English speakers than most HK natives. This is illustrated by here question tones when she asks, "Is there anyone? Anyone?").
it is always easier for cantonese speakers to learn mandarin than the other way around, so it really isn't a surprise that she also knows mandarin since cantonese is her native tongue. her english is a little FOB-y but that's to be expected since she and her family only visits america once every 3 years or so.
Sharon, you are awesome! I'm very touched by your commitment to preaching the Gospel to Chinese, not only in HK but also in China. May God bless you always!
She first spoke Mandarin, then Cantonese, then English. Her cantonese is native and perfect. Her mandarin is native but with cantonese accent. Her spoke English with cantonese accent. She is as Chinese as any one of the 1.3 billion Chinese.
Because sooner or later, Chinese will be the 2nd or 3rd prominent language spoken throughout the world. If you can't catch up, then have your trailer and shotguns ready, and move to the secluded mid-west where all the rednecks and hicks are, because the globalized world is not meant for you.
It was strange, yet enlightening, to hear her communicate in Chinese but it was more strange to realise her english sounded like a Chinese person speaking english.
i think it's a combination of two effects... the smaller effect, her mind is still in chinese mode when she switches to english, debatable, but the larger effect, probably she wants to be understood and is avoiding making sounds that sound too english.
come down people!this is a globalized world, especially for a rising China.sure what she does is very impressive, but we are gonna see more and more people can do the same thing as she does, just get use to it
well i guess if you've spoken cantonese for your whole life, then your english won't be as great. people (including myself) expect caucasians to just automatically speak perfect english, with no accent whatsoever
one half of me is saying wow.. but the other half of me is saying, what's the big fuss? she's born in HK, thus she can speak cantonese with a perfect native accent. i think anyone born anywhere can speak the language without imperfections. so you guys shouldn't give her that much credit, many american-born chinese w/ HK parents speak with perfect us accents. so it's not like it's something supernatural.
