I remember having this game and found a glitch. I cant recall how it goes, but you had to die on the first stage and recollect a power up so that you total number goes over 999. Now it wont go down at all and you have unlimited ammo trough the game.
@ryumishima44 Ah very cool. As I said, can't remember how one did it. It have been many years since I had that game. Master System was pretty new when I got it and just got a MS again a few years back.
SMS has better graphical abilities than the NES. However I do find that the developers of the NES version seemed to have put more time in the graphics. The backgrounds in the NES version seem to have more detail. In this particular video I like the look of the first level but in the others levels I find the backgrounds pretty generic.
I had an SMS as a kid and I never knew that Ninja Gaiden came out for it until recently! It looks so much more superior to the NES version that it's mind blowing! The visuals are almost 16 bit quality! It could honestly pass for a Genesis game even!
The nes version was more challenging. However, this one had better graphics. With the exception of the 2nd level music, of the master system version, the music was as good as the nes version. It was simply different from the nes version.Ohh and the 1st level music on the master system version was amazing.I had a cousin who had a nes, and even him said the master system version was slightly better. The nes library was much better than the master system. You don't need to complaint about this game.
Wow this game plays at a fast speed / animation. I feel like most master system games played at a laggy pace even begin a SEGa MS fan myself. i wish Master system had more games that played at this pace at the time. As mentioned Sega master system was superior to NES but i feel like it never shined as much as it could have .
What a game i paid 35 pound when it came out when i was 16 years old back in the day 1990 something and i played it 10000000000000 times over then the megadrive came out hello Shinobi :)
The SMS game is superior to the NES game in terms of both graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Not only did it look better, but its gameplay mechanics were more refined and closer to the later 3D games, e.g. while the NES game had you sticking onto walls, the SMS game had you bouncing from wall to wall, like the later 3D games.
Unfortunately, the SMS game was only released in PAL regions (where SMS ruled), so both the Japs and Americans missed out on the best 8-bit Ninja Gaiden game.
I apologize, i now see my mistake after seeing this video for a 2nd time. I was biased toward NES, so that influenced my rash decision. I realize that this game beat nintendo in every way =P
I had no idea they made this for the SMS! Probably a good thing - the music makes me want to tear my ears off - nowhere near as good as the NES version.
@ChampionVortex Better how, because it was on the more successful console (in the US)? the SMS version is clearly, to anyone who isn't massively biased toward their favourite console, far superior in graphics and gameplay. The music seems to be a taste thing, I personally like it.
Fun fact: This game is the basis for the Xbox series, not the NES. This was a pet project under request from Tecmo to see whether or not a Master System-specific trilogy oculd be made or if it was something of a crapshoot. Sega coded the game themselves to be a blend of the arcade and NES versions with new features and it sold over 1,000,000 copies in Europe, sadly this was in 1991-ish and by that point the dominance of the Genesis in Europe, Brazil and China forced the idea to bed.
@driftmaniac765 Yes, attacking an old paraplegic man who can't move from his chair constantly even when he is slowly slumping to his death is very heroic indeed. Good Job Ryu.
Part of the reason NES sold better is cause of the music-I mean really, listen. But they should add more Master System games to virtual console. Nine or whatever number is too little.
@jisthebest50 all master system games were better than NES, only problem was Nintendo had the 3rd party market in the USA, so NES had way more games and thus was more popular. The Master System specs were overall much better than the NES.
This game looks way more fun than the current Ninja Gaiden games of the XBOX 360 and PS3.The platforming kicks serious ass in this old games. The problem with the new Ninja Gaiden games is that it didn't really have platforming,so all that acrobatic ability that Ryu had was a complete waste and was all focused on fighting. I remembered how much I loved Ninja G. for my old NES, it was fun. The first Ninja G. for the old XBOX bored me fast because of the lack of platforming :( , miss the old days!
@shake838 Third-party support refers to the number of developers who develop for a particular platform who aren't the makers of that platform (e.g. Konami or Tecmo making games for the NES is "third-party", while Nintendo making NES games is "first-party"). The Master System didn't have much since Nintendo forced companies to develop exclusively for them for a number of years.
wow, ok i grew up on nes version ninja gaiden. what year was this particular game released? seems like it must have been 92-93 since it seems a tad better in graphics. nes ninja gaiden was 89. thijk i might the the emu for this, see what i missed ut on.
@honestchrismcg I find it kind of amusing, both MS and Genesis had inferior sound, and when the Saturn came around, they just said "Fuck it! We're not getting one-upped this time!" Then they just add a whole processor for it. =p
This version absolutely DESTROYS the NES version! I'm still blown away at how far superior the Master System was graphically. If only they had more 3rd party support, the console would've hung around a lot longer in North America than it actually did.
God the music is horrible and terribly simplistic. Even Tetris had a more entertaining soundtrack. 9 out of 10 for the game itself, 0 for the music (my ears hurt :-( ).
Master system always did kick the NES's ass graphically, and that ledge hoisting move isn't on the nes either! Only gripe is the NES music was way better. Nice video dude, good to see the master system in action after all these years! Wish I still had mine. =)

good, this game is like 50 bucks so I wouldn't tell you it was fine if it wasn't. I'm Canadian and my copy of this game works just fine on my Master System.
Haven't played this for 15-16 years...it was better than the NES version but it didn't have such epic music. The cutscens were here too, it had a different story though.
What a game, I was fortunate to get this on the master system all those years ago, my cousin worked in boots when boots sold video games and she brought it for me one Xmas but the box was some shitty ninja game but inside was ninja gaiden...great times indeed
You guys do know in order to play this all you need is a computer right...... if you want the downloads just leave me a message and you'll have it less than 3 minutes guarantee when i give you the down load. i have the nes, Sega, and N64 games plus more. im playing N64 zelda now
WTF?!! I didnt know this came out on Sega Master System. I thought it was NES exclusive. I used to go over my neighbor's house and play this on NES all the time.
if ANYONE knows this game im talking of please reply back. when i was younger my bro had a sega master system and he would play some ninja game and all i remember about it was that you could make like a shadow ninja appear above your guys head at some point..if you know what this game is PLEASE, tell me! thank you.
ryu hayabusa looked so different back then(if that is him) and is there a ninja gaiden where you play as kin[the best ninja ever:so says ninja gaiden dragon sword]
OK the graphics look cleaner (the NES original suffered from a lot of dithering due to only 16 colours at a time instead of 52 like the SMS)...but the music is much better on the NES. Plus the story telling is my favorite bit about the games...and this version didn't have an amazing storyline.
This is just classic, pure badass ninja ownage. Ultra graphics for a system like the sms. And the gameplay is so cool. As for the music, i think it's way better on the sms version than the nes. Maybe it's just because i grew up with this version. Who knows. Memories man.
the master system gaiden is way better than the nes one. in sms gaiden, you can do moves they make you wait for until gaiden2 and 3 on nes. sms gaiden owns.
true, but I think it was just better composers for the NES. The sound engine sounds like it has the identical capabilities; 2 square waves, a saw wave and a noise generator, or whatever.
yes, you are right , i think that was the reason that the sound of ninja gaiden sounded not as cool as the nes version, sorry if my english suck, im from argentina xD.
all these years...i thought to myself..what was that ninja game i used to play on the master system when i was a kid..i didnt think it could be the freakin original ninja gaiden holy crap. so getting this now ffs. i remember the music was great :D

OK the graphics look cleaner (the NES original suffered from a lot of dithering due to only 16 colours at a time instead of 52 like the SMS)...but the music is much better on the NES. Plus the story telling is my favorite bit about the games...and this version didn't have an amazing storyline.

The nes has 52 colors and can load 14 at a time.

theme song on 1st level is the best

The graphics look better than on NES, but other than that I think I'd be inclined to stick with the version for Nintendo's gray box.

This is just classic, pure badass ninja ownage. Ultra graphics for a system like the sms. And the gameplay is so cool. As for the music, i think it's way better on the sms version than the nes. Maybe it's just because i grew up with this version. Who knows. Memories man.

I gotta import this game for my Sega MAster System. Ninja Gaiden kicks ass!

the master system gaiden is way better than the nes one. in sms gaiden, you can do moves they make you wait for until gaiden2 and 3 on nes. sms gaiden owns.

Wow; this one looks very different from the NES version.

the master system has better graphics than the nes, but in the music aspect the nes is better ....
Kaiserraxnos 3 years ago
true, but I think it was just better composers for the NES. The sound engine sounds like it has the identical capabilities; 2 square waves, a saw wave and a noise generator, or whatever.
inthefade 3 years ago
yes, you are right , i think that was the reason that the sound of ninja gaiden sounded not as cool as the nes version, sorry if my english suck, im from argentina xD.
Kaiserraxnos 3 years ago
all these years...i thought to myself..what was that ninja game i used to play on the master system when i was a kid..i didnt think it could be the freakin original ninja gaiden holy crap. so getting this now ffs. i remember the music was great :D

This is a prototype version. The typo was fixed and the text in the cutscenes changed completely in the final version.

I think the music for act 1 is fine, I like it, but I don't happen to like the music from other levels.

I never seen this before. I like this better than the nintendo version. The nintendo version was still good too though.

I'd buy a master system just to play this.
