I have a hard time buying into Carol Reed's version of Oliver Twist, for many reasons. The cast in Lean's adaptation is uniformly perfect (even Sykes' dog!), and the cinematography is sublime, black and white camerawork has rarely looked as good as this in any film. Reed's Odd Man Out also possesses stunning b&w visuals, I think that it and Lean's Oliver Twist are required viewing for anyone who loves black and white cinema.
I saw this for the first time the other day and now have to say its got to be the best version ever, i grew up watching the 1968 version, i love ollie reed - but this version kicks ass, nancy was gorgeous too :)
@stryker1121 I believe he's doing a stereotypical "English Jewish" accent, complete with lisp. I don't know that I really like the depiction (the nose is just too much), but this is a great, great film, one of my favorites.
the most wreched and disgusting nation of all, britain puting its plagues all abroad. prison and hospitals and factories and work engiens. i would be all aboard, from britain.
@Chizpurfle52595 The musical version (1968) made Fagin look like a kind father figure. He wasn't. Fagin was a villian, a preditor, and had a mean streak. This version showed him for what he really was.
I knew I saw that face somewhere! Anthony Newley is the Artful Dodger!!!!!!!!!! LOL And I didn't think I would be able to clearly see those Obi-Wan features through the goofy makeup, but you can't hide 'em. :D
While Fagin is one of my favorite characters, I can't help but wonder if Dickens was anti-semitic. after all Fagin is portrayed as Jewish, or at least stereotypically.
This film is a true classic, the black and white filming depicts fully the harsh povertyy of Dickensian London. As regards comments on Guinness` makeup and performance...well, get down to Stamford Hill on a Friday and you`ll see lots of four by twos who`d slip easilly into that role
@shneevels I thought Guinness portrayed Fagin really well. Very much like the original story. One can imagine this Fagin doing ANYTHING to children. Nothing nice about him at all. I still prefer Ron Moody's portrayal.
Notice Fagin pronounces oliver = 'Oriver' LOL

What kind of accent is Guiness doing here? He looks like such a stereotyped version of an old "hebrew" that it's almost funny.

@stryker1121 Fun fact: the character watto in Star wars episode 1 was based off of this version of fagin.
Which means the film has 2 peopel pretending to be alec guinness in two seperate roles.

What do the adults (e.g. Sowerberry and Beadle) occasionally sniff from a box in this movie?

It's amazing how much they drew from this version for the 1968 musical.

@Finleeport You're not wrong. In the original published version, he was referred to more as "the Jew" than as Fagin.
HexenX 10 months ago
@Finleeport In the book Fagin was billed as a Jew. HollyWood made Fagin look sterotyped.

Guinness' makeup in this film is beyond atrocious. And that Jack Mercer Popeye voice voice, are you kidding?
A good film otherwise but what was Lean thinking with that ridiculous makeup!

Oliver was naive. He had no clue what these people were until he saw the dodger pick the old man's pocket (Brownlow).
