@ 5:50 japchae [jahp·chae] (잡채): Korean dish with various vegetables (typically thinly-sliced carrots, onion, spinach, and mushrooms) stir fried in sesame oil, usually with transparent noodles (dangmyeon), and sometimes with beef, soy sauce, and sugar, usually garnished with sesame seeds and chili pepper slices.
The commentating crew might learn later, but it seems that they are still unfamilar with this dish; most Japanese are familiar with only kimchi and barbecue. Michiba can teach them!
why is that the challenge is moving so cool... i mean he is so relax... what everything he do looks simple... unlike the iron chef it looks so difficult and so many tricks on it ^^
btw i TRY to count how many FUKU SAN!!! i heard and damn... i forgot how many hahaha.....
FUKUISAN! I honestly don't think the (new) Iron Chef USA is bad at all, and I actually really like Alton Brown. The thing is that the old Iron Chef is so amazingly entertaining that you could never top it.
Amazing that none of the commentators knew what chap-chae was! Evne those of us in the west (not of Korean descent) know that as one of the great dishes of Korean cuisine. Amazing how unknowledgeable those commentators were!
@PoiPoi5189 LOL I'm half Korean, and I'll admit, I do have some prejudices, but for the most part, i enjoy meeting other Asians on a one to one level. On a larger scale, I'd read up on Korean history. They've been treated really poorly by the other Asian races throughout history... You comment was really funny though :D *thinking of my mom*
Yeah, you're right. Most places use a machine to cut the noodles, he's doing it all by hand. BTW I would have loved to try the noodles he made for Deng Xiaopeng.
Japchae is a Korean dish, and it's delicious! It is the first thing I learned to make in Korean cuisine, and is traditionally prepared with sweet potato glass noodles.
oh nvm. it worked already. haha i'm sorry but.. thai or indonesian? i'm not that good at these stuff but doesn't jap chae sound korean enough already? :D
isnt the commentator who thought its thai/indonesian supposed to be a culinary doctor? looks like these guys needa do more research, korean cuisine is pretty popular in japan as it is
I love the show, but I can't stand the guest commentator. The "ooh" and the "ahh." She doesn't know a single thing about cooking and she says the most cliche things or the most obvious. She should be quiet and leave the talking to the two commentators.
P.S.
"Noodles fit for a supreme leader." LOL, now I want some of those noodles.
ARGH!! Jap CHAE IS A KOREAN DISH!!! Good God I'm a little disappointed that the commentators are not aquainted with a very common Korean dish...I just wish they were a little more knowledgeable with international foods.
Japchae is a Korean dish made from sweet potato flour cellophane noodles (called dang myeon), stir fried in sesame oil with sliced beef and various vegetables, flavoured with soy sauce, and sweetened with sugar. It is usually served garnished with sesame seeds and slivers of chili.

Rather than have the challenger's translator run around with him, couldn't they have gotten him assistants who speak Chinese?
lokiskywalker 3 years ago
japchae is widely used in japanese cooking and chinese cooking, they r called the spring rain
or potato strings
as it will suck the flavour from hot soup, a perfrct finishing touch for pot dishes and cassaroles

Japachae is from Korean, but made BETTER by Japan and China.
Just like how pasta came from China, but made BETTER by Italians.
