  • Very similar parts of melody of their own song 'book of love'.....

  • THIS BAND. fucking amazing

  • to tragoudi mou

  • Is rigormortis your brother by any chance? :-)

  • I listen to this on YouTube because its play-count on iTunes is getting embarrassing.

  • Like an apendectomy.

  • fuckAD

  • "I want you crawling back to me"...Every broken hearts hope, tho some would never admit it.....kinda sad.

  • One of my favourite songs of all time

  • unbelievable

  • cool song

  • @saxonclay If this is trash, then I'm The Happy Garbage Man.

  • @saxonclay Funny thing - Your negative comment made me wonder what music you think is NOT trash, so I checked your own page. That brought me to the John Butler Trio - Ocean, which really IS A TOTALLY AMAZING guitar piece. So, I'll continue to believe that the world is big enough for both John Butler, and the Mag Fields. Peace.

  • @gdub999tube I started reading this and was thinking "oh this guy's about to be a douche," but then I read the rest and you're a pretty cool guy, cheers.

  • The music and words from about 0:25 to 0:30 sounds very much like another song but I can't quite figure out what song.

  • I can't remember your name.

    It must be something scandalous.

    LOL

  • "Do you think you can simply press rewind?"

  • liike

  • one of the awesome composition of last year

  • I must be out of my mind

  • Is is it just me or does "You can't go around saying stuff, just because it's pretty, and I no longer drink enough to think you're witty" seem like a huge play on words, and hes mixing them up to really mean "You can't go around saying stuff, just because it's witty, and I no longer drink enough to think you're pretty"?? anyone have this feeling

  • @eSHkidd I reckon it's deliberate... just 'cos it's Stephin Merritt!

  • like an appendectomy sans anesthesia <3<3

  • 7 people must be out of their minds...

  • good shit!!

  • @PoshEnglishTwit I'm sure that the person who wrote that is about 10 years old.

  • @dtnewtonesquire Are you talking about me?

Nice try, but no. I'm 12. And a whole lot more mature than you are.

If you thought I was ten years old because of the typos, that has nothing to do with mental maturity or age. it's just a typo. I was typing faster than I'm used to, that's what happens.

  • @Maxdg1013 No?

  • Holy crap. <3 This is AMAZING.

  • @PoshEnglishTwit I could name a thousand people..- oops, i mean "idiots" who would care.

    But not me.

And wow, my other comment hass a lot of typos. I guess that's what happens when i'm typing fast.

  • I don't care that Stephin Merrit is homosexual even if it's true, I odn't care, because his talent is still amiazing.

  • Great track. Luv the line StevenLoos quoted.

  • crawling! doh!

  • i want you calling back to me down on your knees, yeah

like an appendectomy, sans anesthesia :)

  • this is simply a masterpiece!!

  • 4 peope got left behind and voted 'dislike'

  • I love stephin merritt so much.

  • @robman8855 because there are no pretty moving images to keep people's attention from wandering back to that new car advert on tv

  • Because we live in a world without ears!!! More views for this extraordinary song!!!

  • Dan Patrick Show brought me here

  • YES

  • The singing is cool but the jingly jangly instrumentation is what makes this song great.

  • This song is ok, but nothing extraordinary

  • @axwzp define extraordinary

  • i listened to this 126,382 times !

  • Four people must have accidentally clicked dislike instead of like.

  • MF bleeds my heart dry every time.

  • @zaynzaynzayn

that is totally a MF lyric if ive ever heard one haha

  • 69..

  • he has a great voice for a xmas album

  • 4 people must be out of their mind.

  • "You can't go around saying stuff, just because it's pretty, and I no longer drink enough to think you're witty."

  • @StevenLoos Hey, you quoted the best line in the song - nice.

  • why doesnt this song have 10 million views?

  • @robman8855

answer: because there aren't 10,000,000 you's. But hey that's the fallacy of this generation (it's most damning, distinguishing disease)

  • @robman8855 agreed!

  • @robman8855 because its crap? lol

  • @robman8855 because they have 185,679 views right now (with me excluded.)

  • @eighteen18jts Bad joke dude..

  • @robman8855 Because you haven't viewed it 10 million times. Duh

  • @robman8855 because its too good, in a good way.

  • @robman8855 Hard to say. It may not fit into the current (soup de jour) definitions of what is music. It is wonderful nonetheless.

A beautiful piece of poetry when most rock bands can not write a cohesive set of lyrics; many of them have chants or disconnected sentences that are hard to disentangle.

We know exactly what the Magnetic Fields are saying. Some great "wordsmithing" in the writing of this song. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @wsidejack Um, it fits exactly what music is? Where do you come from, planet mars? Furthermore, lyrics do not have to be cohesive to be poetry. Look at the pixies for instance. You are simply trading one exclusion for another. Just celebrate the song, that will be fine.

  • @jimmymortis Ahhhh, where did I say "it fits exactly what music is"? I said you know "exactly what the Magnetic Fields are saying," meaning the lyrics are not convoluted, unlike with some bands (even bands I like a lot).

The only generalization I made was the reference to current definitions of music. Of course that is sarcastic because there is no one definition. I was saying it's a bit out of the mainstream of rock (the Top 40 stuff) right now.

Btw, I'm from Chicago, it's near earth.

  • @wsidejack @wsidejack Well yeah, but 40 is such a low number. The subset of music that is not within the top 40 is much greater than that which is. I think the suggestion that it is wonderful nevertheless is not self-evident from this, or particularly extraordinary and I find your overall point just short of platitude.

  • I could see why this band is one of Beiruts major influences

  • I'm so glad I read the Lemony Snicket books. Otherwise I wouldn't have discovered these guys.

  • @joshaf26 Lemony Snicket mentions the Magnetic Fields in his books?! How awesome

  • @Stephychan0 No, actually Daniel Handler (Snicket) has performed w/ the Magnetic Fields and Stephen Merrit, through his other band "The Gothic Archies," created songs specifically for the Snicket series. "The Tragic Treasury." Good stuff.

  • @joshaf26 Ooh. I had no idea. Still think it's awesome^^

  • I like it because it is just someone's song.....just someone's song....thanx.....

  • I've never been drunk, but have often been bitter, so like it.

And the pained rhymes - Jonathan Richman's gay son. :)

  • a fun sing-along! yea

  • "You must be out of your mind....son!" The word "son" makes it all worthwhile.

  • I am drawn to the Magnetic Fields... mind the nerd pun.

  • This is the best band to listen to when you get drunk and bitter

  • @Ieatbabyseals Probably because the songs are written when Merritt is drunk and bitter

  • @Ieatbabyseals i always listen when drunk & bitter

  • @Ieatbabyseals i always listen when drunk & bitter! or maybe just plain drunk.

  • I can't decide if I like this or not.

  • @julesequalsloveTV I'll decide for you......yes you like it (-:

  • meh. I dont like this style of music.

  • Hey dudes, three things:

1 - There's no auto-tune, that's just him singing at the same time the back vocals

2 - Just because the guy's trying to experiment with stuff, that doesn't mean the album is shit. What, you'd like him to keep stuffing "69 love songs" down your throats every two years? The beauty of being a musician, is that you can change your style.

3 - If you don't get it, don't even bother to answer.

  • It makes perfect sense, bubbles! As could I!

  • It makes sense, to me.

  • Fantastic. Even when he repeats himself he still adds a new twist.

  • The harmony is brilliant.

  • @cantomortal So you were listening to it because . . . ?

  • @PedanticPig I think he might be a Magnetic Fields fan who listened to this song to gauge the album before buying it.

  • @PedanticPig

    somethimes shit hapend

  • @cantomortal LOL...same here. Same here.

  • @cantomortal then y listen r tard

  • is it just me or does this cideo not work like it should?

  • @kajemusic It wouldn't play when I tried it yesterday (and I tried several times), but it's working perfectly fine now.

  • @kittyprydekissme And now it won't play again. I wish I knew what the problem was.

  • @InfinityPoint definitly not. listen to other songs he just has deep, different voice no auto tune. autotune is for shit rappers

  • :D Very Nice!

  • I want the album for my birthday! It's my first time listening to it though. The Maggies (my nickname for them!) are my favourite band!!!

  • was on repeat for about 40 times in past few days while going to my grandfathers funeral- but now that i looked up the lyrics kinda dissapointed

  • great song

  • The Skydiggers!!!!! Yawn!!! Nerd rock at its most generic. Beautiful melody though yeah the lyrics are too cersbral. coulda been a weepie!!! Check out the 6ths 'As you turn to go" X

  • Nerd rock.... :D Thanks for enlightening me on the name of the genre. I agree.

  • You must be out of your mind, son!

  • Not bad, but the Skydiggers were better.

  • Love....love....love!!!!

  • Listening to this album on constant replay. Stephin, Claudia, Sam, John, and the others are all in incredible form.

  • Just saw them last night in Milwaukee - wonderful show, great band. This was one of the highlights!

  • I just saw the Mag Fields for the first time, in Washington DC, and have been chain-playing this album ever since! This song is as addictive as chocolate or cocaine... "You can't go around just saying stuff because it's pretty. And I no longer drink enough to think you're witty"

Where does SM come up with these lyrics, on top of music that's to die for?

Sorry, I am a lunatic fringe fanatic... If this be insanity, please let me never be cured.

  • This song is awesome. The whole album is awesome actually.

Does this song remind anybody else of Dark Green Energy by Robyn Hitchcock? I queued them up, they're both exactly the same length, weird.

  • @PretzelFarmer just curious. Is there a better song on album than this. Reminds me a bit of REM. Already a contender for single of the year. Fantastic stuff.

  • I really love these guys, so fucking glad I heard them on NPR

  • Exactly where I heard of them!

  • @minmotstand

World Cafe, this morning! Oh, wait, that's Pacifica. Close enough, though.

  • magnetic fields are spectacular

  • Of course I'm out of my mind, I'm in love!

  • I can't really listen to any other music because popular stuff can never compare to this. I mean this is genuis, everything else isnt as good. My friends call me obsessed, but whatever XD

  • @ everyone everyone makes perfect sense/ the sense you sense makes perfect sense/ i never knew what i had seen thru MY lens/ but everyone-- everyone makes perfect sense...

  • I just heard a slightly different (probably live) version of this on the radio---any idea what that might have been and if it's available for purchase?

  • Probably the NPR version

  • I can never tell if merritt's singer one or both male vocal parts, or if his voice just sounds like two at once. maybe my ears are just crap.

  • can anyone tell me the basic chords/tabs to play this song? it would be much appreciated.

  • play with F, Bb and C ... with an occasional Gminor....

    have fun!

  • that makes sense for the verses but for some reason i cant figure out the chorus.

  • @scottman182

Listen to Judy Collins "Both Sides Now" Thats the hook that is kicking my ass. Nice hybrid of influences into something new.

  • Yes I noticed that myself. Great

  • Merritt is a great songwriter but he's always so pessimistic im suprised he hasnt killed himself already

  • @dazedcola - His muse is pessimistic. It's hard to know if Merritt himself is.

  • Rockefeller 25/3 in Oslo. I cant wait for this consert.

  • Awesome!

  • Wow! This one sounds like The Book of Love! <3

  • steam punk...no?

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT WOOOOOOOOOOOOT im so HAPPY THEY KEEP MAKING NEW MUSIC!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHH

  • I could drown in a sea of his voice...And I don't care if that makes no sense :P

  • @Bubbles96337 Makes perfect sense.

  • @Bubbles96337: it makes perfect sense!

  • @Bubbles96337 it's called metaphor lol ;)

  • @Bubbles96337 I could as well. He's a musical goddess lol.

  • @Bubbles96337 I know exactly what you mean.

  • I'm loving this whole album... I get to see them in February! It can't come soon enough.

  • First comment! Yay! I'm liking this song alot. Heard it on the radio on the way home.. Thanks for posting!
