Not underrated but maybe under exposed. There just wasn't the media outlets around in those days. Thanks to Youtube we can now enjoy these great artist whom we may never have got to know about?
Irving Ashby grande chitarrista che deriva dalla grande influenza di Charlie Christian. Il vero proseguitore di questo stile inconfondibile che è uno dei pilastri della chitarra Jazz
This Is the band of Jimmy Mundy the arranger who wrote for Benny Goodman. And this is the chart he wrote for Goodman which featured Charlie Christian on guitar with the Goodman big band on 3/4/41.
So different not hearing BG come soaring in towards the end.
You can also hear a bit of Irving Ashby on Jazz All Stars Perdido and Just Jazz All Stars How High the Moon. My guess is that prior to 1926, when musicians had to record into the horn, the best a guitarist in an orchestra could do was strum loudly. Electric guitar pickups were invented circa 1931. This freed guitarists in an orchestra to play single note melodies effectively. Irving Ashby, Charlie Christian and Slim Gaillard, among others, took good advantage of this.
