My mom used to have a huge supply of 78 records. She had a few that had pictures on them. They have long since been gone. This was one of the picture records she had. It had a cowgirl on a horse riding, if I remember right, out in the dessert.
Happy Birthday Patsy Montana! (October 30, 1908) My mom is named Patsy because grandma was a fan (mom doesn't like it, goes by Pat). Tomorrow is mum's birthday (October 31, 1935)
This is from the 1939 Gene Autry movie Colorado Sunset. The group was the KMBC Texas Rangers. I can guarantee this as my father was one of the quartet that is backing her in this number. They did 2 Autry movies and several B movies with Johnny Mack Brown. The guitarist is Herb Kratoski(?) who was married at that time to Tex Owens daughter Laura Lee (later vocalist for bob wells)
@MrCdrboy Fantastic comments. A very solid fan base. Thats the way she was I understand. Thank you all for commenting. Johnny Mack Brown I think was a big football player at Alabama before becoming a star. Anyone know more about that? He was a great one.
@navydoctrinidad Yes, you are correct. Johnny Mack Brown was a star on the 1925 Alabama Crimson Tide team that won the national championship and won the Rose Bowl.
While in LA for the Rose Bowl, the team took a tour of a movie studio. Johnny Mack decided he wanted to be a movie star. So after college he went to Hollywood and became a cowboy movie star.
@briscoe42 Boy did he ever become a star! I understand that he was buddies with Randolph Scott and that his work helped influence Scott to go Western. Have you heard anything about that? Thanks for the great info and the note. Charlie
@navydoctrinidad I do remember hearing that he and Randolph Scott were good friends.
As another part of the story, a young kid in Arkansas listened to that Rose Bowl game on the radio. He decided then that he wanted to play football at the University of Alabama like Johnny Mack Brown...and he did just that. He was on a Rose Bowl and National Championship winning team for the Crimson Tide in the 1934 season. That kid's name was Paul Bryant -- known to most of the sports world as "The Bear".
My mistake, you are right, they are the Texas Rangers. I found a link to a nice article about them on bwesterns(dot com), but looks like youtube won't let you post links.
I think the group is The Prairie Ramblers, who played with Patsy for some years. I don't recall any appearances with the Sons of the Pioneers. I haven't seen the movie in years, but this might be Colorado Sunset.
Back up group is Sons of the Pioneers (with Roy mysteriously absent, probably he'll show up in the next scene)....anybody know what movie this is from?
