Excellent film that is still relevant today, sadly. D.W. Griffith painted a chillingly accurate potrayal of African American behavior in a post Civil War United States. If only we'd listened to this brilliant film then, our nation wouldn't be in such dire times as it is now. Considering how the Obama administration has been, Griffith's The Birth of a Nation seems in many ways like a prophecy of documentary rather than action adventure (as many thought of it as at the time).

We watched a segment of this in film class and my teacher commented how the African-American actors outside were actually African-Americans, whereas the actors playing the domestic slaves were, as you said, white actors wearing black shoe polish. But some were actual African-Americans.
