Master Yip Man's Cham Kiu seems so different from the one taught by William Cheung. I'd honestly rather be learning the exact forms that Master Yip Man taught.
a master should be respected for what he knows and taught. he taught many students who went on to teach the next generations. if u think u know better, go teach a system instead of criticizing Wing Chun. at that point in Hong Kong, no one knows Wing Chun better than this man. now that you have YouTube and the benefits of 30 years of MMA development, of course it is easy to comment on a traditional art form. nowadays fight schools have lost the attitude of respecting elders or masters.
From my understanding I think it is made to be for offense due to Yong chun was a female and it is about quick and swiftness to attack or defend first. Since Yong Chun was not as strong as male, the only thing that can beat strength is being fast.
@YangYuYan Thought it was Mg Mui who invented that system, and then she passed it on to Yim Wing Chung, the pretty girl, who then passed it on to her hubby.
I'm trying my hardest to understand the philosophy behind this form. It looks as though it's built for offense more than defense as the stance remains mostly the same, and the upperbody pivots to protect both sides... Practical indeed. Ip Man is the greatest.
i think yip man has beaten the crap out of this japanese guy during war with china. i think less than 1 min and he beat him. this guy freaking owns. he was the master of bruce lee too.
I imagine there are no applications videos? When Yip Man was dying, is it known how much he filmed? I just heard people and read in books that he recorded the three sets, dummy and knife forms, again dying 2 weeks later. Who recorded it, and is there any more, or was that the total amount that was recorded?
There are copies of these tapes (the Yip Man 8mm) on a vhs/dvd which was available years ago. It was made by Danny Conner/Oriental World and was about Ip Chun. It showed Yip Man doing the forms and then Ip Chun showing them.
Don't forget, Yip Man was dieing of cancer when this was filmed. I believe he died about 2 weeks later. There were some moves he didn't have enough strength to do properly. Look at the kick in the set to see what I mean. He doesn't extend it. He did when he taught it though. Either way it's great to see this!
I disagree with your analysis of his kick. He is executing a mid-heel kick which doesn't require much extension. As it was explained to me by my sifu it is like a block of wood being driven into the opponent, usually they will walk right in to it.
Yip Man passed away in 1972 but just a few weeks before he died, he made sure the various forms of Wing Chun were recorded on 8mm film in order to preserve the pure Wing Chun system. Yip man was very weak during the shooting and had to rest between shots. Ip Chun sold the one and only 8mm of his father to Leung Ting in 1980's for less than $10,000 US. Ip Ching received $0.00 from the sale of his father's 8mm. Today, Leung Ting is the copyright owner of Yip Man's only existing 8mm.
I believe that Yip Man's sons own copies of these video tapes and so does Leung Ting. I hear that there is also footage of Yip Man doing the pole and knife forms but those have never been released in their entirety.
Thanks very much for that historical Wing Chun moment, very happy too. Hard to believe than that small man could kick our butt, but trust me he could.
what the fuck is this shit?
