thx for the reply. I did not see it til now. i remember all the stuff you mentioned. Like the slot car track. We used to get cardboard boxes from Castleberrys and slide down the hill behind Chamblee Plaza when they first built it. Now that slope is covered with tall trees. Chamblee was a great place to grow up!
I remember Officer Don's coming to Athens to do a show. I was (am) a huge fan of Popeye cartoons, and I gave him a drawing which he showed on The Popeye Club. Prior to this show, O.D. hosted The Clubhouse Gang, and a show called Big Adventure. My favorite game was Balls-and-cans during which kids tried to get three small balls under a can which hung from a string.
Correction. Yes, that is me on the far right on the bottom row, but it was not in 1960. This episode is from 1962, I believe. Uncle Cathode, do you happen to have the entire episode tucked away somewhere? Regardless, thank you for posting this.
Uhhh, oh my god, I'm not believing this. The little kid with the bow tie, sitting on the far right in the bottom row is me. A neighbor, Johnny Narvelle, I believe was his name, invited me to be on the show as a member of his birthday party entourage. Priceless. I am 55 now and am about 5 in that video, which dates it right at 1960. Wow!
I used to watch OD and Popeye all the time. It was excellent. I guess the best regular feature was the "oooey gooey" game. Funny as hell to see the kids dip into the nasty bag of goop. They liked it also. Kids could be kids in those days. I lived in Chamblee. Life was better then. :-)

Ditto the above. Huntley Hills '69. Bestionk Dooley, Morgus, Old Sarge Army Surplus, riding our bikes (without helmets) to Chamblee Plaza or the Racetrack to race our slot cars: life was indeed better then.

OMG! I was on that show when I was, I believe 8 yrs. old for my birthday! This is so cool! Unfortunately, I don't have any films of my party. Barbara Plunkett Turner
Don Kennedy now runs a syndicated jazz show on radio called Big Band Jump. Ever get shot with salt by another jazz aficionado, George Buck, over at 3008 Wadsworth Mill Place? He built his house along a creek and had the grounds beautifully sculpted. Once I stopped to ask his permission to walk his property, and when he opened the door, I could see floor-to-ceiling custom shelves filled with 78's. He owned and ran WCOB radio out of Avondale Estates, and started a jazz label in Texas.
Don't know if you were ever on the Officer Don Show, I was, as I recall when I was 8 for my birthday party. I can remember those bright lights to this day! I often wondered whatever happened to him. Thanks for the update. I loved him and Leave It To Beaver! I actually did meet Beaver's older brother up in North Carolina at a gig he was filling in for Beaver cos he got sick. Have to admit, he was a lot cuter than Beaver. Very personable. Miss all the old goodies! BPTurner
in '64 or '65, (my twin brother and I were 4 or 5), Officer Don made a public appearance and autographed photos of himself, which he gave away for free to us kids. It was a highlight of our childhood, meeting him. He was super nice! God Bless you, Officer Don!
I grew up in the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna. I, and all the kids in my neighborhood, used to watch The Popeye Club with Officer Don on WSB TV. A few years ago I found the website for his radio show The Big Band Jump and his e-mail address was listed. I sent an e-mail telling him how I enjoyed him on The Popeye Club when I was a kid. He responded with a very warm reply, a true gentleman if there ever was one.
I watched "The Popeye Club" religiously as a child. One of the more unpleasant memories I have of doing this is being scared by The Super Chief on "The Funny Company." His "voice" was a foghorn and, in my childlike, undeveloped mind, it was frightening to think that something like that could happen to someone's voice.
I also was on The Popeye Club as a child ... I remember visiting several times with my Scout troop. Would love to see a clip of Officer Don and Orville!
I was actually on "The Popeye Club" with my elementary school class. Can't remember when...maybe 68 or 69. I got a huge Rich's-size bag of goodies because it was my birthday during the month we were on the show.
The program is called Big Band Jump--which is based out of Atlanta and in addition to being on NPR stations, it's on many commercial radio stations, including WICH 1310 in Norwich, Connecticut and the WDRC talk of CT quadcast (WDRC 1360 Hartford, WMMW 1470 Meriden, WSNG 610 Torrington, WWCO 1240 Waterbury)
I loved The Officer Don Show. I was on it ca couple of times and won the Balls in a can game. I thought it was the greatest.
