I understand the horn part in this piece is exceptionally difficult, but I could not stand all of the imbarrassing mistakes that the horn player was making! God save Tina Guo! She is such an amazing cellist yet unfortunately have met a horn player who definately could not play his part well.
Sorry but this is not Shostakovich...... she is playing it in a romantic style. Shostakovich is meant to be played with anger! Power! Force! Rostro's is the only one worth listening to. Don't want to be mean but I think its true.
@xbasket12x I sort of disagree but sort of agree. There are parts in Shostakovich that you can play in a beautiful way. Well sort of a psychotic demented beauty. But ya it is meant to be less romantic. Either way it's freaking hard to play.
@xbasket12x It's people like you who could care less about the actual piece and only care about the person playing it. Music isn't meant to be judged upon, it's meant to be appreciated. There are competitions to prove skill on an instrument, but I highly doubt anybody with the right mind would judge a PERSON just from their skill. As world class Cellist Yo-Yo Ma refuses to judge competitions as he says "Who am I to judge anyone's self-expression"? I think you should ask yourself that question.
@SynthRay I see your point....well I apologize then. Music is about self-expression. I saw that same comment on one of his videos. I also agree with your view on competitions. That is the same reason why I refuse to enter any cello competitions. I believe that judges only grade your style rather than skill. I have been constantly asking myself that very same question. But in this video it just isn't....Shostakovich. Also this piece WAS written for him. Please look it up. No hate intended
@xbasket12x Firstly, I can tell you're not an appreciator of music since you resort to favoritism as you come to Tina's video and you think it's a competition. Music isn't meant to be played exactly the same by every person who plays it. Shostakovich didn't write all his pieces meant to be played with power. So just labeling an artist from one of their pieces of art wouldn't be wise. Also, this wasn't written FOR Rostro, it was edited by him. Please keep your judgmental opinions to yourself.
this is my most fav cello concerto! i played this a couple years back but didn't play it anywhere as wonderfully as you did. great job :) shostakovich is one of my fave composers because of his intensity and aggression in his music. you executed so well!
I was at a Tina Guo performance with the Cobb Symphony Orchestra and this was the main piece that Tina played and it was just as amazing as this recording. (but cooler because it was in person!)
She is a great player. It's true, this piece should never be beautiful...passionate and fierce, dramatic and dark maybe...this recording makes her sound horrific, however...I suggest purchasing a recording to hear her true tone
With all due respect, DrunkenCellist, we have to rely on the cliche that beauty is in the ear of the beholder. The beauty in Shostokovich's Cello Concerto #1 is immutable. Beauty's level goes up or down based on the performance and cellist has the greatest responsibility. Is this concerto beautiful? Of Course!
You misunderstand me. I love the Shostakovich Concerto, but beauty in the physical, not just w/respect to the corporeal, visual, but also what can be tasted touched, heard is what refer to. Yes, beauty can mean something beyond the physical, so really, even an "ugly" person could be beautiful. If that's the case, then it's too meaningless to call music beautiful because all music is beautiful. If someone asked you to describe a piece of music with one word, everyone would would say beautiful.
You see, that I'm not saying that it isn't beautiful... I just think this concerto could be better described by another word (intense, maybe?)...and you did notice that I was kidding, I hope...and even then I was only talking about "first reactions."
My friend, DrunkenCellist, (I call you friend because I sense a fine mind on top of your head - much like mine), I enjoyed reading your line of thinking on this idea of beauty. Ends up being a matter of taste. Nevertheless, we can tell the difference between and average student after six months of training and Tina. Thanx, DC, for your thots. I guess I should mention that the "much like mine" is something like reductio absurdum.

She's probably doing something wrong if your first reaction is "beautiful" :P
j/k...I don't think Shostakovich intended it to be "beautiful" though...but she is good, indeed.
