  • Sorrow in my soul !!!

  • (2) Now at midnight the moon is right above

For whom does it shine like in the past?

Nothing remains on the rampart but some ivy

Nothing to hear but the rustle of pine branches in the storm

Up in the sky the moon and the stars remain unchanged

But in the earthly life, rises and falls come and go

Does the moon hang there to reflect those changes?

Ah! the midnight moon over the ruined castle

  • (1) The Moon over the Ruined Castle

Flowery feast in spring high up in the castle

Cups were passed around with moonlight reflected on the surface of sake

The moonlight shined through the old pine branches

Where is that old moonlight now?

Encampment in autumn was white covered with frost

A number of geese honked as they flew across the sky

The moonlight shined on the swords thrusted upright into the ground

Where is that old moonlight now?

  • Очень красивая мелодия.

  • this is so beautiful, thank you so much for posting this for us. Although I was wondering if you could tell me what the title would be translated into english?

  • sniff

  • Hearing how beautiful this song is actually inspired me to learn the flute.

  • Grazie !

  • Music is an universal language. Domo arigato.

  • Lyrics translated

It was a Sake ceremony looking up the great castle under the trees of cherry blossom in spring. I could see the moon mirrored in the surface of sake I was holding. Now all I see is a lonesome Japanese pine tree and the ruined castle beside it. I miss the old moonlight I used to know.

  • amazing

  • This brings tears to my eyes...thank you for this beautiful song!

  • すbらしいです。感動しました。滝廉太郎の名曲中の名曲という意味がよくわかりました。

  • No rendition of "Kojo no Tsuki" is comparable to than the one performed by Scorpions...circa 1979!!!

  • Great interpretation.

  • I'm going to play this song on Koto for my Japanese ensemble! It's sounds beautifulllll. My mom told me it originated in Sendai?

  • I played this song on the violin for my grandma's funeral. Always makes me cry.

  • i like this song, but so scary..

  • omg such a beautiful song~ quite poignant. Thanks for uploading!

  • btw, what kind of flute does she use? o:

  • It's a standard orchestral flute. Probably with French keys, since the tone is more flexible.

  • It's so sad.... But awesome, I love the feeling it brought to me

  • one of the most soulful songs i've ever heard

  • the composer of the song died at 24...poignant

    tremendous!

  • That was just BEAUTIFUL.

  • Wow, wonderful piece ando so well played.

  • what kind of flute is that??? pls tell me,i'm planning on buying one...

  • Misleading title.

    Kimono (着物)means Japanese dress (traditional)

The flute is just the orchestral flute

    (Böehm Flute)

The famous flautist (flutist) James Galway has this recording made with accompanying synthesizer arranged/played by a Japanese.

  • A normal flute. Hard to learn but easy to play! ^.^

  • Very beautiful.

  • This song has a sad history. It was dedicated to the Byakkotai and Joushitai, hence why it is rather sad.

  • me and my recorder mates played this song fastly(my teacher told us to), it sounds sucks and crazyyy!!! I doesn't sound sad and pretty anymore. :( Well, we have to play it fastly on the competition later. For those who read this, please cheer for us.(or at least says "Good luck" or wtv..." We never won.:(

  • thank you :)

  • So very well done.

  • I think you have a really great tonal quality.Fantastic.

  • Is she holding back tears or does she have hard to breath? She looks somehow affected when she plays... It is very touching piece so maybe tears, cause I almost started to cry. Very beautiful! 5 *

  • I LOVE THIS sONG!!! I wanna cry because of failure of Army Reserve Assessment and my best friend left on Saturday

  • nevermind ^^

  • sweet song...

  • I had to sing this song in middle school for class. The translated lyrics are very powerful. She did a very powering version it made me cry. Andre Rieu's version made me do the same.

  • Very dramatic:)

  • good luck!!

  • This is great reference for the same song I'm going to play in my concert. Thanks!

  • beautifully done

  • the flute has such a pretty and fragile sound

  • pretty and sad.

  • とても心地良いです。ありがとう!

  • eternal music...

  • I can't explain my mixed feelings when I heard it for the first time. This song is essential, sad but also so powerful! Isn't so love too?

  • amazing song!!!

    very beatyfull melody!!

  • Yoku shimashita! Anata no oto wa yasashii deus. Anata no hoka no ensoo o kikitai desu.

  • LOVE IT

  • Great sound

  • Beautiful!!

    Nice.

  • so levely !

    i like it

  • love this song. it reminds me of my music teacher when i was 11 yrs old...now i'm 24!!!

  • This song (which I love, BTW) couldn't possibly be better performed. Her tone is so delicate and so adequate for the gloomy feeling. I can actually see the moonlight through misty clouds soaring over an abandoned castle.

She does play the fue, doesn't her? The tuning - a little sharp - reminds me so much of it.

  • love this Japanese old song thanks .thumb up for Rentaro

  • this song sounds even more beautiful played on wiolin. Its on one of the cd's of Andre Rieu

  • Awesome song. I was reading a fanfic at the same time listening this and I noticed a tear on my cheek. I dunno, why I was cryin'.. Maybe it´s the song's cause?

  • What fanfiction? are you a writer?

  • ありがとうございます。

    ヨアチム

  • :D haha something I can actually read. ^^

  • せいこうをおいのりいたします。

  • seikou wo oi no rii tashimasu.

    O_o'

    Wtf does that mean?!?!

    XDD

  • Hi,

    it's read:

    Seikō o o・inori itashimasu

and means something like "Good luck!".

    Joe.

  • haha okay

  • Very good - 5 stars !

  • Somebody gets the lyrics?.. Translated in latin letters please...

  • Beautiful. Is it possible to find the sheet music for this song - either free or payable&downloadable on line ?

I googled and googled but to no avail.

    Thanx.

  • It's not that hard! Simple melody, simple chords.

Even a mid level musician could write it out.

Come on, do a little work; it will be good for you.

  • Unf, I'm not a musician and bds I think I'm musically impaired. I've spent hours with PET software and with musical dictations and I just cun't do it - flawed brain wiring. After the third note every note fits OK. But I've found both the sheetmusic - and I play it now, and the mp3 song rec in English & in Japan. Best regards.

  • haru koro no hana no en

    meguru sakazuki nkagesashite

chiyo no matsu ga e wakeideshi

    mukashi nohikari ima izuko

  • How sad and touching the Japanese song is.

  • Sounds good. It's the most plaintive melody I've heard.

  • beautiful piece
