elvis was not the king of rock and roll, never was . didn't do it first and didn't do it best. he just brought the watered down version to the white kids in suburbia. bo didley is the real thing.
I am 70 and listened to all the r n r in the 50's and 60's, but Bo got very little if any exposure in Australia in those days, all we seemed to get was Bo singing the song "bo Diddley"however he did have his own style which seemed very repetetive, regrettably not to my taste, but glad that his fans can get to see him on youtube.
I remember when I first heard George Thorogood and the Destroyers, and heard him sing 'got all my Bo Diddley records'....and then I knew who was the king of rock n roll:.............Bo Diddley
Ok, let me reprhase it then, The drummer in this clip sucks compared to Bo's original drummer! How that! NOt because he is white , but because he sucks! BUt I still think Black Drummers are better! JK :)
I know what you mean, there are a lot of great white drummers, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, ect ect. Im talking about alot of the white cats hired in the 70's to play with the forefathers. they just dont have IT....
it does sound racist, but its a fact, Jack! Back then and even now, drummers dont have "IT" . Blacks are the fathers of rock n roll. Just listen to the rythm sections , man! those cats really knew how and where to hit the drums! The forementioned great white drummers took their cues from black drummers, Example... Mitch MItchell = Elvin Jones, Ginger Baker = Max Roach. Compare the drumming on this to the drumming on say a clip of Bo back in the 50's and you be the judge, Jack! :)
Gene Krupa was the best drummer of all time and he was white. There's good black drummers, good white drummers, bad black drummers and bad white drummers. To say white guys don't play drums as well as black guys is making a judgement on a group of people based on the colour of their skin which is the definition of racism. It's like someone saying black guys are lazy, just cos the black they know are lazy. And I'm black!
I'm not a hardcore bo diddley fan but I can still enjoy this...even though the quality is shit you can still tell it's good song and an awesome performance
outstanding stuff! takes me back to my early days and sitting around with my dad and listening to old 45's of Bo and other R&B sounds...nothing better! thanks!
better than nothing!? bruv - thank you for sharing this. it sounds like the beginning of everything good in music: i can hear the fall, te velvet underground, the yardbirds,
run dmc, all kinds of mad brilliance in this. I'm so happy.. Damn!
Yeah, you don't need the best quality recording to enjoy Mr. Diddley, the noise and crackle just makes the groove even chunkier!
Lot's of bands drew inspiration from Bo, but this beat goes back further than Bo, though I think he perfected it. Before him, they called it the hambone, and I'm sure people a thousand years were banging out something similar on a drum or tree trunk somewhere. But Bo definitely did it better than anyone else!
it's still the late, great Bo Diddley!

@adoreslaurel More than repetitive I´d call it "hypnotic", just because I thinks there was a specific purpose behind that "repetitiveness".

There was only 1 Bo Diddley.... he did not copy others but had his own sound. Bo was a genius! We miss this great talent!

great post man thanks!
fwiw BO's legendary rydumz were pretty easy to follow for most of his drummers, his style just allowed for so much, or less.

@jimflicks2 - wonderful analogy - one more; Kenny Aronson = Billy Higgins (everywhere at once)

@jimflicks2 Black, white, braon, yellow, skin don't mean a damn thing, you can either play well, or you can't.

Drummer is not too good.

Man! this is all great film footage! But you can tell, Bo's beat is superior when hes got a black drummer. Them white cats just dont do it right...

Thanks for posting this. I saw Bo D in Birmingham, AL around this time along with Albert King, Bobby Blue Bland and The King BB.
It was of course a All-Star Blues Show.
As a young teeanager can away from the concert bvery impressed with Bo & Albert King.
I think it has something in the unusual looking guitars they played.
