I have heard the actual recording the Glorious Lady Parker had read of this tome, in later years. Quite the mark, I would say. And true to those who know, regardless of how the words are spat.
@MGMingenues3 Thank you for saying this! So many of my friends think this is a brilliant film but I am baffled by the absurdity of the extent to which the dating takes place- suddenly everyone in the 30s had a drawl and dressed like that? It's a cheap technique to give the illusion of superior film-making and distracting from the plot and characters.
@LouisVideosInc Exactly!! I watched 15 seconds of "Amelia" with Hilary Swank and had to turn it off because of that imaginary drawl that supposedly everyone had in the 1930s. Everyone is trying to hard to do a variation of Katharine Hepburn. It's embarrasing.
For the most part, I thought the movie was a delectable thrill ride. JJL served up the Parker role with just the right amounts of insouciance and unsheathed candor. There was no mawkish effort made to try and varnish over Parker's corrosive style. She suffered no fools gladly, and one so intellectually endowed would be certain to see the world as being rife with offenders.
One of my favorite movies. What a cast! Mizz Parker is one of my most adored. And the script from the movie weaves in lines from her poems and short pieces. Fantastic little snippet.
I saw this movie and thought JJL was SO good - now I don't remember why I thought that.

she was portraying her character as drunk and apathetic... I thought it was a fine depiction of both...
