If Kevin Collins had left Miller and Nilan go at it, then I don't think the brawl would have happened. Collins has broke up many a fight prematurely through the years.
This clip is a perfect illustration of what a classless gutless worm Nilan was. Very rarely acquitted himself against a bonafide fighter; usually got pummelled. Not surprised to see he talks like a 5th grader in the interview segments.
@bigpoppa2112 Actually, there's no reason that it couldn't. Also, Montreal's chances at this one are significantly better than lightning striking the same spot.
lioninwinter101 that is a LIE that Chris was arrested later on in the day for trying to sell drugs. In fact that persons name was Paul Hegarty that was arrested for trying to sell drugs. Whom had nothing to do with Chris and did not know Christ. You LIAR. We still love you in Montreal Chris!
Ready for this.. july 26th 2009, Nilan taken down by a mall cop while shoplifting a bathing suit.
Nilan's accomplice, yes he needed help to steal it, arrested again several hour later trying to sell some drugs!

Actually RRaquello if you look at history fighting in hockey has existed from the beginning and when it was the original six teams it was mostly Canadian born players. Imagine that, someone like Rocket Richard could score goals and beat the crap out of any opposition. So your suggestion is really off base. Imagine that.
I was a teenager at the Garden that night, the place was bezerk! The cops were freakin' out, the walls were sweatin', and the whole place was rumblin'! The irony is that Chris Nilan is from the Boston area. When he's talkin' in the interview, he's soundin' like he's from L Street in Southie somewhere. I never liked Nilan, even when he ended up in Boston. Used to boo him then, too. Great memories from this clip, though.
o'Rielly was a hard-nosed very physical player,Dale Hunter was a hard=-nosed physical dirty player.Hunter wouldn't fight ya,he'd spear you in the throat.Never did like Dale Hunter
Really so when Terry O' Reilly went into the crowd to beat up fans of the opposing team was that an example of good hockey. Dale hunter was a pain in the arse, and yes a dirty player, but still most teams would not have minded having him on their side or team. Terry O'Reilly was no angel and did many things. But since this is about Chris Nilan, I will not go further.
One other thing that people don't realize about Chris Nilan is that he did not carry a grudge off the ice with an opposing player. I remember when Chris got injured in a game and so did one of the opposing teams players. One of Chris's enemies. Both Chris and the other player landed up in the same room in the hospital. Chris was just chatting away to the other player whom he had fought with. The other player was at first amazed, but came around. That is the type of person Montreal's Nilan was.
sparwood8 the thing is Larry Robinson and Bobby Gainey were not known for fighting. So when they did engage in a fight, you know it had to be that bad for these two men to even fight with anyone. Furthermore even the russians said that best player in the league was not Wayne Gretzky but Bob Gainey. :D I know the oilers took it hard, but hey this was coming from Russia's observation out of all the players in the NHL. :D
Nilan was a solid 3rd line right winger with an important role.Terry O'Rielly was simular although I think O'Rielly was a better passer than Nilan.Yeah man,Big Bird destroyed Milbury, there is a vid here on you tube of that fight.
Oh O'Reilly was a good player, no doubt in my mind. WE loved to hate him in Montreal. :D and wished he were on our time. Kind of like Dale Hunter, we loved to hate him too, but we would have loved to have him on our team. :D Along with Glenn Anderson. sparwood8 - While Terry was tough, he wasn't so tough that he didn't get his ass handed to him a couple of times. Big Bird Larry Robinson could hand O' Reilly his ass and O' Reilly knew it. In fact tough guy Mike Milbury sucker punched Robinson in a game. Larry went down, but he got up with a vengence and when he did, he picked up Milbury with one hand and gave Mike a crisp punch in the face for his trouble.
sure, we'll see. I like his concept of what a team should look like, I think. Sundin would have to have the best 25 hockey games of his career to make him worth what we're paying him. I think you're being sarcastic about the 2mil. comment, but I agree that they aren't worth much more then 3 or 4 mil a year, Paying both twins 7 million would prettymuch guarantee an early playoff exit for whatever team is paying their contracts
that is an astute analysis, I heard the Sedins and Ohlund all want around 7 million each, in which case I hope none of them are Canucks next year, Trade the Sedins now for Bouwmeester and bring Krog and Jaffray up. I am a little concerned that Gillis' ego might be his weakness, he continues to insist that the Sundin signing was a good strategy. At least he worked it down to a 1 year deal instead of tha moronic 2/10mil offer it started out as.
As a Habs fan I can honestly say that Nilan will always be fondly remembered as a good honest hard-working player who wasn't afraid of anybody. He did his best to protect and fight for his team-mates and even has a Stanley Cup ring with the Habs.He even could score which is more than you can say for most of today's enforcers.
I agree with you Wrappindude. I remember the night Chris got a beautiful goal on a penelty shot. Jacques Lemaire was coaching then. Chris scored and when the camera's went to Lemaire he was laughing his ass off. :D Lemaire by the way barely cracked a smile. Chris could score and when he didn't he made sure he helped someone else get the puck to score. He was a totally unselfish player. He has a big heart and he loved the game.
Nilan was no diffrent than any other hockey team that had an enforcer. How about Dave Semenko with Wayne Gretzky . No opposing player could touch Gretzky, not even a clean check, without big old Dave Semenko going after them. Look at all the teams each have enforcers. The diffrence between Nilan as an enforcer and other enforcers. Is that Nilan enforced with style, flair and : charisma. WE still love you in Montreal Chris, you always have a place there with the Canadians fans.
Then there was the time, that Chelios, and two other players were in trouble regarding young girls in Montreal. One of the players was a rookie and almost lost his rookie carreer. Chelios was warned that if he continued he would be traded. There was also a third incident with chelios. Montreal is one of the six orignal team and the organization has high standards for thier players and team.
As for Claude Lemieux his big ego and playing for himself is what caused him to flee montreal. Winning a hockey game is a team effort not a one man show. Lemieux also had problems with that ego that got him in bits of trouble. Lemieux's problem was his mouth and ego.
dome1972 that is untrue about why Lemieux or Chelios left MOntreal. I love Chelly too, but he really got himself in trouble more than once over women. Even before he hit the ice as a Montreal Canadian he was in trouble in the states playing for the USA team regarding a girl in a hotel room.
No Chris was really from Boston??? Come on, anybody that is a real Hockey fan, knows their players and know were they are from. Besides Grapes would not let anyone forget that Chris Nilan was a Boston grown lad. :D When it comes to the Irish ( in which my mother is Irish) we don't care if you are from Boston or Montreal, you are Irish and you are one of us.
This is the question I have. What's with the French-Canadian Goaltenders in the last 15 years??Why do the best Goalies come from the Quebec Junior league?
that makes alot of sense! And I come from parents and grandparents who grew up as miners in Flin Flon, Manitoba, so it only makes sense that I tend to gravitate towards goon hockey! :-) Probably also explains why I can't stand the style of play the Sedins bring to Vancouver! I was definitely brought up with friends and family that disparaged skilled hockey players. You were encouraged to play tough more than pretty. not to mention, I never had any hands or skill!
fair enough! I try to give credit where credit is due. I'm sure there's some biased feelings towards the Quebecers here in B.C. (I don't think it's as bad as Quebec, but that could be my western bias)I think Westerners generally respect a hard-working, scrappy, tough hockey player and the average Hab fan respects flashy, soft players. I cannot begrudge the Habby fans for being fervent supporters of the team though! Beats the fans in Boston who would rather watch basketball and baseball.
If Montreal loves a player who plays the game the way it supposed to be played, and you're saying Nilan is that kind of player, that means Montreal generally doesn't love the French players??? because there aren't many Franco hockey players who play the way Nilan did. Whenever we played tournaments in Montreal(4 times before I turned 20), the fans DID NOT like the way we played, which Nilan and you would probably agree is the way the game is meant to be played.
GREAT HOCKEY VIDEO!! To see 2 other great hockey videos, just click on my name. The new one is for my upcoming hockey book which will be released in October and has the Foreword written by Keith Primeau!
Thats why Taz beat him early on in his career! I love knuckles but give me a break he was DIRTY!! Gainey beat Taz? Give me a break, Do you know hockey? Probably not, but I am sure you can let the rest of us know about the next gay pride parade you will be in!!
Funny the whole first clip of this video blocks out the fact that he got handled by miller in that game. And not to mention they lost this fight. Its a joke Nilan did nothing but instigate this whole game then ran.
I remember this like it was last night...Realize this O'Reilly could have put any of those guys down, and he was a coach...Nilan was the guy you loved to hate, BUT....if anyone remembers only a few years later, Nilan finished his career with his home town team, the Bruins.
I remember watching this game live. Nilan was my favorite player when I was a kid. I got to meet him a couple of times and he gave me his stick at the Spectrum in Philly after he beat Dave Brown three times in the same game. An all time great fighter and super nice guy off the ice.
Miller also beat Kordic though Kordic did hold the edge in their series of fights. Miller and Nilan usually fought even. They have at least one really good fight on YOUTUBE. Pretty even fight, at the Garden.
MAN!! I remember this game !! THE MOST exciting game I've ever watched on TV. As much as I hated the bruins, I loved them for the rivalry they had with the habs.
I love how Jay Miller thought his fight with Chris would be a mismatch. Yeah, for Chris. I like Miller, but he was never a match for Chris. He had some good fights with him, but Chris and John Kordic could beat him.
I was 10 yold when I begin to watch my first hockey game. I remember this one :)
Old time good hockey. Yesterday the habs won 6 to 1 against Boston. No fights, boring games, where is the old rivalries. At 31yold, only the playoff are good right now to follow the NHL. I dont care about this violence, it was entertaiment and just listen the crowd. It was great, Nilan was a great one like Jay Miller, Lyndon Byers, Dave Brown, well great warrior :)
No tough guy to help Kovalev, Latendresse don't try so much to send a punch. It's just pushing, no really fights. we are far far away from the 80's. Is it possible that the new hockey boys don't know how to fight ? If you compare with old time boy :)
But for sure, I liked Julien and Carbo/Muller japping and this action at the endig game :)
BCU84, that is not the reason. I remember that when it happened. I am much older. Even the announcers and both the Bruin and Canadian players said he respected Cashman and grew up idolizing him. Hell Nilan said that himself after the game. I was watching the game when that occured.
Nilan is a sexy beast. ha ha ha. Listen many of those fights started because those opposing players would say something about Chris's family members. Here is an example. " I slept with your wife last night" now saying something like that to a man like Chris Nilan, tells me that player was looking for a fight and they got one when Chris would reply with a Crisp punch in their face.
First off, you're a fucking idiot. That's not how or why any of Nilan's fights started you fucking tool. Nilan was a pussy who cheapshoted people. Neely beat his ass, Jim McKenzie made him his bitch. Nilan only won fights when he was fighting someone who wasn't a goon...like Paul Boutileerwho had less penalty minutes in his career than Nilan had in a season!
One other thing about Chris Nilan. In a Boston Bruin Montreal game, Wayne Cashman dropped his gloves and challenge Nilan. It was the one and only time Chris Nilan walked aways from a Hockey fight. Why? He grew up idolizing Wayne Cashman and he would not disrespect him. That is who Chris Nilan really is.
Chris also was great at the talk before the fisticuffs. I remember one game I was at, I forget the opposing team. Chris and the other player where jabbering at each other and Chris said" I wasn't going to punch you in your face right away, I was saving that for later"! Ha ha ha it was priceless
What people don't know about Chris Nilan. Is that he has a good heart. When Chris played hockey in Montreal. He would often visit the children's hospital not just there but other places when he was in town like Buffalo. He also would shame the other players in visiting sick kids. Chris is a great guy, and those assholes he punched out, derved it. For example often the fights would start when opposing players would say something about Chris's family.
Nilan was a cheap coward. He attacked Quebec's Randy Moller from behind in the infamous 1984 Vendredi Saint (Good Friday) playoff brawl; used his stick against Rick Middleton and, based on the audio here, I'm certain he never graduated from Northeastern University.
Ah, c'mon... check Nilan's fight card, he's gone with the all the heavyweights, middleweights, and anyone else you want to throw at him. Guy had no fear and fought everyone.
Heavyeights like Paul Boutellier (threw sucker punch at him for no reason); punched Moller from behind for no reason and many more bush league moves. He was a jerk. I have no respect for that scum.
Those were the days when hockey mattered in Boston. They were just as popular as the Red Sox, even more so around April and May when the playoffs were cooking. Too bad they have a terrible cheapskate owner in Jeremy Jacobs
I disagree- in that era of hockey, if you had your gloves off and grabbed Knuckle's sweater, it meant you were gonna dance. He didn't get in the NHL because of his public speaking prowess. I watched this game live as a kid and couldn't believe jail time wasn't in order.
Nilan tries to sucker punch Boutilier...does it shock me? It didnt back then and it still doesnt today....Montreal plays dirty....always have and always will
Good Ole Irish-blooded Nilan, he was born in Boston btw. I remember the Boston Garden had a special plexiglass shield installed just for him because the crowds were throwing stuff at him all the time.
linesmans interview was hilarious...look at that hair and glasses...wow

No Chris was really from Boston??? Come on, anybody that is a real Hockey fan, knows their players and know were they are from. Besides Grapes would not let anyone forget that Chris Nilan was a Boston grown lad. :D When it comes to the Irish ( in which my mother is Irish) we don't care if you are from Boston or Montreal, you are Irish and you are one of us.

This is the question I have. What's with the French-Canadian Goaltenders in the last 15 years??Why do the best Goalies come from the Quebec Junior league?

They dont
vaneKfan2k 3 years ago
that makes alot of sense! You were encouraged to play tough more than pretty. not to mention, I never had any hands or skill!
haggggs 3 years ago
I can't disagree with any of that!
haggggs 3 years ago
fair enough! Beats the fans in Boston who would rather watch basketball and baseball.
haggggs 3 years ago
If Montreal loves a player who plays the game the way it supposed to be played, and you're saying Nilan is that kind of player, that means Montreal generally doesn't love the French players??? because there aren't many Franco hockey players who play the way Nilan did. Whenever we played tournaments in Montreal(4 times before I turned 20), the fans DID NOT like the way we played, which Nilan and you would probably agree is the way the game is meant to be played.

Classic game at the old Boston Garden...and I was lucky enough to be there!

As much as I hated the bruins, I loved them for the rivalry they had with the habs.
acarch 4 years ago

Bring back this old hockey game !
Ray32 4 years ago
How about yesterday's Habs-Bruins game? Did you find it reminiscent of old time hockey involving a fierce rivalry?
I must admit, Andrei Kostitsyn cannot fight.
dhronin27 4 years ago
Poor Fights,
No tough guy to help Kovalev, Latendresse don't try so much to send a punch. It's just pushing, no really fights. we are far far away from the 80's. Is it possible that the new hockey boys don't know how to fight ? If you compare with old time boy :)
But for sure, I liked Julien and Carbo/Muller japping and this action at the endig game :)
Ray32 4 years ago
but he can score...and not your stupid bruins
cedrikcharette 4 years ago
BCU84, that is not the reason. I remember that when it happened. I am much older. Even the announcers and both the Bruin and Canadian players said he respected Cashman and grew up idolizing him. Hell Nilan said that himself after the game. I was watching the game when that occured.

Chris Nilan was a beast.
wontonnoodle23 4 years ago
Nilan is a sexy beast. ha ha ha. Listen many of those fights started because those opposing players would say something about Chris's family members. Here is an example. " I slept with your wife last night" now saying something like that to a man like Chris Nilan, tells me that player was looking for a fight and they got one when Chris would reply with a Crisp punch in their face.
Voltatire316 4 years ago
First off, you're a fucking idiot. That's not how or why any of Nilan's fights started you fucking tool. Nilan was a pussy who cheapshoted people. Neely beat his ass, Jim McKenzie made him his bitch. Nilan only won fights when he was fighting someone who wasn't a goon...like Paul Boutileerwho had less penalty minutes in his career than Nilan had in a season!
boston4877 4 years ago
Awesome video!
rainman12953 4 years ago
One other thing about Chris Nilan. In a Boston Bruin Montreal game, Wayne Cashman dropped his gloves and challenge Nilan. It was the one and only time Chris Nilan walked aways from a Hockey fight. Why? He grew up idolizing Wayne Cashman and he would not disrespect him. That is who Chris Nilan really is.
Voltatire316 4 years ago
Chris also was great at the talk before the fisticuffs. I remember one game I was at, I forget the opposing team. Chris and the other player where jabbering at each other and Chris said" I wasn't going to punch you in your face right away, I was saving that for later"! Ha ha ha it was priceless
Voltatire316 4 years ago
What people don't know about Chris Nilan. Is that he has a good heart. When Chris played hockey in Montreal. He would often visit the children's hospital not just there but other places when he was in town like Buffalo. He also would shame the other players in visiting sick kids. Chris is a great guy, and those assholes he punched out, derved it. For example often the fights would start when opposing players would say something about Chris's family.
Voltatire316 4 years ago 2
I swear i seen some cops hit him.. lol
Brad85Eh 4 years ago
Nilan was an instigator and chaeap shot artist. He only won fights over weaker opponents and by sucker punching people.
ikonoklast44 4 years ago
Nilan was a cheap coward. He attacked Quebec's Randy Moller from behind in the infamous 1984 Vendredi Saint (Good Friday) playoff brawl; used his stick against Rick Middleton and, based on the audio here, I'm certain he never graduated from Northeastern University.
BostonGarden 4 years ago
He played at NU for 3 years and then jumped to the NHL.
zubizuva 4 years ago
Ah, c'mon... check Nilan's fight card, he's gone with the all the heavyweights, middleweights, and anyone else you want to throw at him. Guy had no fear and fought everyone.
grep67 4 years ago
Heavyeights like Paul Boutellier (threw sucker punch at him for no reason); punched Moller from behind for no reason and many more bush league moves. He was a jerk. I have no respect for that scum.
BostonGarden 4 years ago
Nilan's about as articulate as you would expect a big dumb talentless goon to be....
generalbullmoose 4 years ago
Nilan wasn't a goon you ass...he was an enforcer...hell most of the Boston Team of that era were goons!

Good Ole Irish-blooded Nilan, he was born in Boston btw. I remember the Boston Garden had a special plexiglass shield installed just for him because the crowds were throwing stuff at him all the time.
