  • I got clones and I think I planted them too deep, or didn't thin them out quick enough because all I got is some huge green onion with no bulbs at the bottom, don't really know what I did wrong. Are all green onions supposed to make bulbs?

  • @fockya - I'm not sure what variety you had. That said, I always try to leave at least three to four inches of spacing when dealing with onion sets. Also, I don't try to push them in very deeply. Keep trying and experimenting!

  • can you eat them right after you harvest or do they have to cure and dry up some?

  • @fockya - Yep! Anytime you want!

  • I love onions.. thx for the info

  • @BackyardDiscoveryCo - No probems - just got a batch of onion sets for planting out!

  • yup, i was just answering his question... you dumb butthole.

  • at rasta rick

most grocery store onions and garlic are treated with chemicals that prevent them from rooting

  • @trespizzzle = Most everything you buy in a grocery store is treated with something!

  • I'd like to grow some onions too. Im currently growing an apple tree, hopefully in a couple years it will bear me fruit. :) but on that note, I can buy regular onions from the store and plant them and doing that will give me more onions to eat and keep to re-plant for next season as well?

  • @TheRastaRick - I totally agree! Thanks for the comment!

  • I noticed a bush of peppers in your garden and I was just curious as to what kind they were, thanks for the reply. I grow Thai peppers and they are pretty hard to grow, they need just the right conditions or they just refuse to grow.

  • @HoschtonBoy - Those are either cayenne or Thai Hot peppers - I've grown both most every year. Thanks for the comment!

  • I'm crazy about hot peppers of any kind, what kind do have growing. Great videos, wish I had found these long ago.

  • @HoschtonBoy - My favorite is cayenne at this time - goes great in the chili dishes I've done here on Youtube!

  • ruined by the god shite at the start

  • Wow! Over 4 pounds of onions, just from that small area?? That's incredible! I can't wait to try this! Thank you for sharing.

  • @thatPinkFlamingo -Thanks for watching!

  • Nice video...thanks.

  • @teasenow - UR welcome!

  • Great video! When did you plant them?

  • @caholaway - Hey! The spring!

  • I hate onions D:

  • @PflGlace Well, nobodies perfect :)

  • @PflGlace I really can't understand why you hate onions. In all the discussions I have had with onions about you, they really think that you're one really cool dude. One of the Vidalias said that she even liked the wallpaper on your channel.

  • nice crop....i see that you also have hot peppers

  • Yes, I love to make chili and my favorite pepper for that is cayenne!

  • When is the best time to harvest? How so you know? Another video said to let the flower bloom, then die, then let the stock die down to just above the ground, then just grab the stock and pull the onion right out of the ground. Do you agree?

  • The neat thing about onions is that 'anytime' is a good time. You can even eat onion sets. As to flowering, onions are biennial which means that if you leave them in the ground past one growing season, they will go to flower and will try to produce seed. You'll want to eat your onions before that happens! Finally, one sign that your onions are ready for harvest occur when the stems begin to look old and can be laid over easily by hand. Hope that helped!

  • awesome video MR.

  • This video helped me a lot. This year I have planted onions for the first time and today my son squashed one on accident so I said well dig it up lets see what its doing. Well it was tiny and i thought something was wrong *laughs* but i see they are like that early on then grow bigger. Thanks for showing me this!

  • Thanks for the comments!

  • Where did Onions come from?

  • Originally, they come from seed. The onions I used were starts that had been developed from seed the previous season. Hope that helps!

  • Where did that previous seed come from?

  • nice muscles haha.

  • Shared it & indeed great in salads & spaghetti!

  • Thanks!

  • your peppers looked pretty awesome

  • Thanks!

  • hi danOManno, how big is your garden?

  • My garden is very small...about 61 square feet in size. However, you'd be amazed at how productive it has been:)

  • @000Winter000 thank you for the comment. I will not try

    it.

  • you didnt mention anything about the beautifull peper plants behind you, and is that a cherrry tomato bush?

  • You have a keen and discerning eye. :)

  • Can you still get a large bulb if you cut off some of the green tops to use in

    salads??

  • A great question! I'm not sure.

  • @DanOManno Thank you for the honest answer. I grow

sets tightly together in a large pot so I can cut off the tops as

they grow, but have put some down hoping to get larger onions.

their stalks are getting so high I thought I could cut them, but don't

want to do it if it will stop the bulb from getting larger. Anyone out

there in YT land have an idea????

  • @9aspengold5 Im not sure about cutting them off...but the old timers around my area say that when the onion starts to seed, step on it to break it. Then all the nutrients will focus on making the bulb bigger. It may work with cutting them...I dont know. :D

  • I planted ones for green onions and some for big bulb onions. Hope they do well in my sandy soil. Nice looking cayenne in the background at the end. me and you share the same weather. I live near Wichita.

  • I wish you luck also! My current batch of green onions are doing very well this year. Just be sure to keep them well watered. Let me know how they turn out!

  • just tried it hope it comes out as well

  • Keep the faith!

  • yes! this is the type of video i was looking for you rock! =)

  • Thanks so much!

  • Hi, great video!! I live in Puerto Rico and I think that onions can be grown here. Do you actually plant the whole onion, like a garlic bulb or a seed?

  • Thanks for the comment. No, I actually use onion sets that are onions grown the season before as onions from seed then harvested and used to form onions the next season!

  • Cool vid. I like your style. I have a small patio, but I am still going to try to grow select veggies in containers. Keep posting and keep gardening.

  • I appreciate the comment. Let me know how your garden does this spring!
