  • Dude, I got my teacher to do a total lesson on this one video! WOOOOHOOOO!! I feel soo proud!

  • In the five years I have worked as a server I have never given a penny in my change. I always round it to the nearest five cents. And I literally have never had a complaint.

  • I'll be honest - I glanced at the title and saw one of the words as a completely different word...

  • Vlogbrothers for president. Yes.

  • No pennies (one cents) in Hong Kong :D !

  • Just one last video, and then i'll sleep.

  • A REAL PENNYTARD.

  • HEY! MY MOM IS A PENNY! (her name :I)

  • John! Read this!

    18 cent coin FTW!

    cs (dot) uwaterloo (dot) ca/~shallit/Papers/change2.pdf

  • Pennies are disks of suck that are worth LESS THAN NOTHING!!!

  • So I'm a longtime nerdfighter. But uh.... I followed this link from a comic. Technically, the twitter of a comic character. Who constatly talks about how he has sex with your mother for a nickel. The post was "This guy is the oppisite of your mother." Seriously... the internet is WEIRD.

  • watch?v=6JeJhObKCFA&feature=related

^^^ Dude gets FINED for using pennies to pay a doctor's bill.

  • Everyone beneath my comment is a big bag of Romen!

  • How do i pay 19.99$ without pennies and nickles? Am i just going to have to give them 20$?

  • @cokabears Dimes, half dollars, and dollar pieces. That would delete the need for the hundredth's place in U.S. currency. Instead of dealing with $19.99, it would either just be $20 or $19.9

  • @NoopieSon Companies would probably change that because the only reason that companies price items for x dollars and 99 cents is to mislead consumers so the companies can say that their product is less than a given amount. What they don't say is that their product is only less than said amount by one penny

  • @KathrynAnn116 That's a very good point I hadn't thought of. Besides nobody actually pushing for the elimination of pennies, perhaps a large reason is because companies would actually generate less income. That $X.99 strategy makes them A LOT of money if you think about it. If they were forced to choose between having an item be $19.9 and $20.0, to have the same affect I would assume they would choose $19.9 which would mean they would get 9 cents less on everything they sell.

  • The penny being worth 1/26 of what it was worth during Lincoln's presidency would be much better answered by someone like yourself. People like you think they are so witty and smart and are asking what Lincoln would think. Lincoln is dead. I am sure you think that Lincoln fought the Civil War to free the slaves (no, he did it to preserve the Union). You are not dead. You should ask why a private bank (the Federal Reserve) has inflated away the value of this coin. That is what you should do

  • You have currency (not money John) that is printed by the Federal Reserve as ''Federal'' as Federal Express that people assume has value (but it's only value is the paper it is printed on that allows for the exchange of goods and services (most goods are imported and that is why this service based economy is fake). You need to start asking that big brain of yours what the definition of money is. Not many people start with that question and what usually follows is just incoherent rubbish.

  • You have no idea what you are talking about. Pennies and Nickels are the only two coins still minted that have a real value that is higher than their nominal value (printed value). Pennies before 1982 are 95% copper and nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel. Smart people are stock piling these so that once the crisis comes they will have real money in the form of metal and not worthless tokens. Go to coininflation on the Internet to learn more. I left the US. You will starve.

  • you only actually need four pennies throughout your whole life =P

  • We should get rid of physical money altogether, really. It is rarely used and costs a fortune. Credit is a better way to go, as long as we have better enforcement against hacking into bank terminals and ATMs.

  • Australia got rid of their pennies years ago and we came out of the GFC much better that the US, just some food for thought.

  • so the time I spend watching vlogbrothers videos I could be doing something else. I think not!!! :)

  • exchange 1.000.000$ into pennies, smelt the pennies down, sell, and repeat for infinite money. Umad U.S economy?

  • @MrWizzors That's very smart, apart from the the fact that it's incredibly illegal.

  • we need pennies to give change more specifiaclly. ex. buy candy in a shop costs 99c but you only have a $1 bill. There is no way to give change without the penny

  • Comment removed

  • I'm very excited because AP Economics helps me understand all of this.

  • *starts filling up a large box with pennies and nickles*

  • I rarely have a wallet or pockets, so when I find a penny on the ground, I'm usually sad because it isn't worth taking with me.

  • Dimes and nickels should switch sizes.

  • awwww i love pennies

sterios & stuff are just rip offs

  • maybe if we eliminated pennies and nickels, we could stop pricing things like "$99.99." Boy, is that pointless, annoying, and deliberately misleading!!

  • @user1maximus It'd be $99.90 instead.

  • @user1maximus It would just be 99.9

  • @user1maximus It avoids the $100 tax band in this situation, and makes it less to tax and therefore cheaper.

  • @Iamlooty depends on if there's sales tax where you live. Where I live in oregon there isn't.

  • @user1maximus

Actually, in Sweden, we have prices like that, but in relation, we only have dollar coins as our lowest currency (except ours is worth less than a dollar). If you pay by cash, it's rounded up/down to the full dollar, but if you pay by card, you pay the price is says on the tag. Easy handling of money.

  • did a report on this subject. this helped soooooo muuuch! thanks john.

  • Alright, now who gets to play the hero here and show this video to the government, solving a the worlds problems?

  • I don't even save my pennies, I throw them away. I fucking hate pennies too.

  • i bow hate pennies so i collected all ofthem around my house andi know make earrings out ofthem i make them well pretty

  • Cost to Make Penny and Nickel Rises, Annual Loss Reaches $116.7 Million

  • I love his floccinaucinihilipilification of pennies!

  • no homo

  • honestly i only started watching this video cuz i thought it said "I HATE PENIS"

  • Who else read: I hate PENISES?! lol

  • I think I heard that New Zealand or Australia got rid of their 1 cent coins... at least we don't have 2 or 3 cent coins like some countries used to (if they don't still have them)

  • come on America we need to... "eliminate these disgusting bacteria ridden disks of suck that fail to facilitate commerce!"!!!

  • don't worry, it's not controversial, everyone hates pennies

  • Hey, pennies are actually really fun to burn. They turn the fire blue and it looks cool.

  • John Green for Secretary of the Treasury!

  • it would be so ironic if the was a sale on the shirts for five dollars and six cents.

  • Do you have a view on quarters?

  • if everyone gave a penny for your thoughts in this case you'd have a considerate amount of cash I bet you'd take it huh? lol

  • I feel as though it would be easier if we changed the system to only accept dollars. There would be no unnecessary change. That would make taxing pretty difficult, though....

  • i came into this video thinking nothing more of pennies than that they were shiney...but now they're disgusting bacteria-ridden discs of suck that fail to facilitate commerce...John green, you've changed my life

  • You need a singular unit of currency, we need the penny as a singular unit, like at a cashier it comes up with 1.36 change, She gives you a dollar, 3 dimes, and a nickel, what we use for that .1 left? So we can't get "rid" of them, but we should change the material. but the nickel... yeah.. the nickel can go.

  • ..I thought the title said ''I hate penises''.

  • JUST STOP MAKING PENNIES!!!!! it works and those who like them dont lose there precious penny

  • @eXcommunicate1979 but then the pricing system wouldnt work.

  • i alredy hated nickels-but i know realize why pennies must also die!

  • go pennies and nickels i love them so much

  • Watch "Death to Pennies!" by CGPgrey. Really great explanation of things.

  • Did I mention that I hate pennies? I DO! I started a WhiteHouse.gov petition asking the current administration to abolish the penny and nickel please sign with me by going to "wh DOT gov/DSD"

  • What about Dimes and Quarters?

  • Grrr everytime I see the title of this and It looks like I Hate PENISES!!!!!

  • What about when theres sales tax? the price might be 1.90, or 1.95 (not 1.99) and the sales tax would create a situation where a penny would have to be given in return.

  • @hairfreak23

Simple... include sales tax in the price.

  • thats why when i dig in my purse and grab the pennies, bye, and throw them away.

  • "I got attacked by a baby."

His face while he says this made me laugh so hard my friend thought I was having an asthma attack.

  • this is why the penny should be worth 50c

  • decimal currency is one of the best things that ever happened to Australia

  • In Australia, we discontinued the use of 1 & 2c coins many, many years ago. Nothing happened. While we still have a 5c coin, if something is $19.43 we just round the to nearest 5c (in this case, $19.45) - UNLESS, you happen to have a 1c coin and a 2c coin handy, because as far as I'm aware while they are no longer created, they are still legal tender. (NOTE: someone please correct me if I'm wrong haha)

  • Agree so much!

  • I completely understand what he is saying but what happens when you purchase something and your change is 3 cents? or 91 cents? That's what gets me. The penny is useful........ sometimes.

  • @Cynamine Except if the penny didn't exist, those situations wouldn't exist.

  • go google "83 things you can do with a penny"

then you'll understand how right opportunity cost is...

also check out this video /watch?v=WKXBnE7s1dE

you'll understand... you'll understand opportunity cost is so right...

  • I could argue that most political issues are rational issues. And some people are irrational.

  • Abe is also on the five dollar bill.

  • So my AP Government class had Model Congress last week, and one of the proposed bills was to get rid of the penny.

    John's influence is growing.

  • I keep every penny I get in a pouch on my backpack. I proceed to use them to buy low-priced items. If the cashier gets frustrated, he/she realizes that pennies are stupid. If not, I'm facilitating commerce with a void, which is kind of cool to think about.

  • Good thing all the tweets/comments from p4a that were worth 1 cent each didn't get paid for in pennies :D

  • John Green has prove time and again that he is much more suited to be the next president of the United States then any of the people who are currently running for the position. Excuse me if the word running is not the right word since the race hasn't officially started. Would petitioning work better in this case?

  • Douche

  • @Roblo4200 how is he a douche? he's probably way smarter than you.

  • John Green for president!

  • @DiaryOfATeenageNoob just because he hates pennies dose not mean he should be president

  • @Umedark If he told everyone God told him to hate pennies and nickels he'd have a chance, i think.

  • What do you hate more Unicorns or Pennies/Nickles

  • Thanks John for helping me with an A on a speech! My topic was whether or not pennies should be minted... they shouldn't.... My thesis was 'pennies are disgusting bacteria-ridden discs of suck the fail to facilitate commerce' and the whole class started laughing. Thanks again!!!!!

  • @egirleagle the guy opposing me said that it would raise prices and cut charity donations.... loser...

  • I like the penny. The real problem is inflation. Fix it.

  • I wrote an entire persuasive essay on this topic last year in AP English. I too tend to get angry when talking about the absolute lack of logic in pennies.

  • Hey Nickels are job creators! Let me explain! I can buy $1,000,000 in nickels, smelt them, and sell the metal for $1,600,000, and present this fact to you causing you to go over the edge, and head butt a mirror, thus employing glass and metal foundrys (and one surgeon)!!!

  • JOHN GREENE FOR PRESIDENT!

  • fucking pennies and nickels

  • wait a minute... look at his brows. that is one terrible brow depilation.

  • OMG... is there a word for something that has a lesser value than nothing?? 0.0

  • Yeah. I agree. Nickels should stay.

  • I agree, pennies NEED to go. Nickels, not necessarily, but they should be made smaller.

  • I concur.

  • As a Penny this video makes me sad :'(

  • @gotoyourhappyplace I'd give you to Coinstar, you could be with family there.<3

  • 4 minutes of video about pennies...Not once did he mention lucky pennies :(

We need pennies for the luck!

  • Why is a dime so small when its worth double the nickle, which is double its size? :B

  • In class they asked if we should get rid of pennies. I was the only one to raise my hand. The teacher asked why. I gave the speech. The response: "Wow..."

  • fuck pennies....

  • I am a republican and I couldn't agree with more.

  • ... The last time I watched this video, I was rolling pennies and nickles... I spent an hour or so on them, and will have $9.50 when I go to the bank. Yay.

    -J

  • 2:15 should be a gif

  • I'm from england, we have pounds and pennys

  • PUT IF U GET RID OF PENNIES WTF WILL I PUT IN THE ZOO PENNY MENDER.. WTF

  • Sorry, but the USA is much too fascist these days to do anything other than steal from people. If something like this was approached by our government, the result would be tragic.

  • DOWN WITH THE PENNIES!

  • So the time we spend fiddling with pennies wastes a billion dollars in time? What about the time we waste watching rants on YouTube?

lol, I agree with what this guy is saying, but I just had to point that out >:D

  • Coin-star also benefits by robbing us of said worthless change.

  • 1:40 false, it looks shiny and i like shiny

  • nice! I'd like to tell you here in Lebanon we pay billions of dollars as taxes that simply go in vain ... Why? bcz our "respectful" leaders spend them buying a 35 million dollar ring for there beloved ones. No jobs. No good salaries, and VERY HIGH PRICES!

  • I thought it said i like Penis

  • I liked pennies. Then I heard this.

  • well Australia just uses$2 $1, 50 c 20c 10c 5c coins as far as i can tell our economy hasn't collapsed

  • Nickles are the same size as quarters practically, Ever give a Nicjke thinking its a quarter? Fuck them!

  • ooooh.. thats what she was talking about before i killed her... i mean before she died -.-

  • You need to hurrying and get old enough to become president, you or Hank. Your the only ones that can save the country.

  • @GuideMeIntoTheLight Hurry up and get old enough* Im retarded sometimes.

  • Not to mention the zinc content in post-1982 pennies can kill your dog. Though I do think the penny still has a place in the monetary system, so why not just use aluminum pennies? Cheaper, no tarnishing, and non-toxic.

  • lol i saw you on fox

  • Anyone who follows the QI elves is probably a nerdfighter. So if you were sent here by the QI elves, subscribe and watch the pure awesome that is Nerdfighteria.

  • Just got sent here by the QI Elves :)

  • Um, so the official QI twitter account tweeted a link to this video. Um, WOW.

  • Why not take the penny and nickel and use thm to mint a 2 dollar coin

  • "it's gonna save Americana billions of dollars and create alot of exiting efficiencies in our economy and eliminate these filthy disgusting bacteria-ridden disks of suck that fail to facilitate commerce"

if i get 1 thumbs up i'm gonna scream that in the middle of Gov and ec. class

  • @thefight4god POST RESULTS

    >????

    >PROFIT!

see what i did there? profit? haha

  • Considering that copper has antimicrobial/biostatic properties, I have a feeling they might not be very bacteria-ridden. Someone who knows more about biology should test some pennies that have been hiding in the various cracks and crevices around homes/cars/etc. to see just how bacteria-ridden they are.

  • Zinc companies are not the only people to benefit from pennies. Coin collectors like me benefit because copper and wheat pennies are still in circulation. Zinc pennies are the biggest nuisance! The penny inevitably hurts everyone through 100 million dollars worth of inflation each year. Although 100M is not much, it will at least dent the problems with coin production. As for nickels, vending machine companies are in the minority. Why should we keep propping them up by hurting the economy?

  • wut about minig companies that mine the zinc arent they benefiting from pennies

  • What is they got rid of nickels and made pennies worth five cents?

  • what about sales tax!!!

  • I HATE PENNIES TOO!

  • what about sales taxes 7%

  • Please don't laugh at me, but would we have to change all prices so they end in a 5 or 0? Like if we bought a bagel, and we had 67 cents in change, then we can't properly get change back because there are no pennies..

  • @tardisenthusiast you could just round it off to the nearest 5 or 0

  • you dont know much about coins do u

  • can someone send this to the next usa president?

  • What if you pay 99 cents for a one dollar item?

  • ...steal the note trick, but it is much harder to get away with this on more then one occasion. Another factor is, no matter how small, most people will wait for their change, it is almost a human nature to wait for the money you believe is still yours, even if it is something that is as useless as 3 cents.

Pennies exist simply to confirm the transfer of money into the business has occurred. Of course, many people now use cards, but for many small businesses, it helps to keep them running.

  • ...Your employee accepts this note and I leave. What is going to stop your employee from simply slipping this money into their pocket without registering the purchase? Nothing. Unless you have very decisive evidence, that book was stolen and is lost forever.

Now the scenario in a world with pennies. I buy the book, however this time th book is being sold for $9.97. I still pay with a single note. However, your employee must now register this and give me my 3 cents. They could just try the...

  • Not sure if you'll read this John, but I have a rebuttal to your wish to abolish the penny.

Yes, it is still true that a penny is still worthless in the exchange of goods and services, and most likely will be, that is not the reason that pennies are used today.

Lets have a scenario where pennies no longer exist. Imagine that you operate a book store. The prices of these books are all in full dollars. I go into your store and purchase a book for exactly $10. I then pay with a single note...

  • What do I fill my penny jar with?

  • @MegaStormwarning

jars and piggy banks would have dimes and quarters

    : )

  • i'm jewish and i love pennies (and nickels [and all other forms of money])

  • @bnjmv LMAF

  • I just wrote a research paper on this topic. I am so happy I was able to cite a Vlogbrothers video in it. DFTBA.

  • @Spankymunoz I am about to do the exact same thing. :]

  • You sir, are :ggg:

  • Ughh I want that shirt!!

  • I'm writing my college research paper on this topic. I also did one about why lawns suck. Thank you John Green. Except I'm arguing that we should rebase the penny to the value of a nickel, then get rid of nickels and use the copper in them for other things, and thereby we will get rid of the one cent piece from our system, and the previously 9 cent nickel will cost less than 2 cents to make. And Illinois is happy.

  • what about the two dollar bill?

  • Am I the only one that misread pennies as penises?

  • @videocatcher234 should i thumbs up because u WERE the only one?

  • Ok, so you have a 50cent coin and some thing is 49cents..... What ya gonna do now?

  • @10pottera nothing would be 49 cents, troll

  • I'm writing a persuasive speech on this subject, and I'm going to use a lot of the points you made, including the bit about "disgusting bacteria ridden discs of suck that fail to facilitate commerce".

    YOU'RE WELCOME.

  • let's get rid of pennies and get a 50 cent coin!

  • In other words, it just doesn't make cents.

  • ok then

  • when my AP euro class goes to a model UN to debate about current issues, im going to debate about pennies.

  • I looked at this video at the time it was released, and i hated at the swedish '50 öre' since it was basically the same thing as a penny. The 50 öre is now gone from sweden :D wooh! to effektive commerce!

  • I hate pennies so much.

  • John Green for president?

  • My research paper isn't necessarily about getting rid of the penny, its arguing for the plan Francois Velde proposed, which is to rebase the penny to make it worth 5 cents, like a nickle. So we would be getting rid of pennies, but also adding money to our economy, and getting the pennies back in circulation. Does this seem like a good plan to you guys?

  • I am doing my research paper on this very subject. Thank you, John.

(And also, dammit I want that shirt >.< )
