You used to be able to hear a pin drop in the venue at the beginning of the ending crescendo when they played this. I remember seeing this at Giant's Stadium once and you could hear a whisper among 70,000 people. Tremendous experience.
Yep I was there..I think....I was thinking about "ALL THE PEOPLE" That would be in the mic section and before that they were all over the place, But this was a boot video and in 86 the cameras were still pretty big....However a shout out to all the Tappers if not for you guys/gals we wouldn't have so much variety of Dead to listen to.....Thanks and keep at it 2011 and Further.

Whoever posted this, thank you, it was quite possibly one of the most mind opening experiences that I can recall in my entire life and in fact explains it all. Kleinrocks youre talking out of your butt. Roses original is great but the GD take it somewhere else. Bit like Hendrixs "All along the watchtower" gave emotional depth to Dylans song
Interesting show. 2nd of 3 nights at the Spectrum. This was only song played after Space (save for the Midnight Hour encore). As Morning Dews go, this was definitely one of the better ones. I remember Brent's keyboards sounding like a jet engine towards the end. Must've been something I ate. =)

It was so cool! After '85 Garcia started bringing out their signature tunes--New Speedway Boogie--I can't remember--but the signature tunes he didn't do for years.Death Don't Have No Mercy(later). Garcia changed after '85 and I don't mean his "near death" experence. He started to groove again before he went down. Man, he was so sick. They forced him to play. They worked him to death. Not letting him play smaller venues. Not one person went to visit him in the hospital.Parasites
Meadowlands, '85 summer, I believe, MAYBE '86. We were talking to some people that followed The Dead up the East Coast(don't remember if the band played in Florida, while coming up the coast) but the guy I was with could ALWAYS call what The Dead would open with, 1st or 2nd set. It was just a phenomena my guy had.So he told these people The Dead woul open the 2nd set w/ Miss.1/2 Step.Boy,did they come down on him!He was NEVER WRONG! They opened w/1/2 Step, 2nd set.Folks BLOWN OUT by it
I remember this as one of the last great shows of '86 before Jerry decended into that awful summer haze... Who knew what lay ahead in '87 - '90 ? I miss you every day, Jerry...
The Philly and Meadowland shows rocked. Philly security for tickets were jerks for this one. A bunch of goons harrassing for no good reason. Went out of their way to harrass the crowd for fun. Losers.
I love Morning Dew and it's great to hear an enthusiastic audience and i appreciate it being shared but regret to say that this recording does not have enough base for me. Though it's a jerry song, phil needs to be heard.......no monster base comes through on my headphones and that means it does not reflect the true sound that is essential to this song .....saw my first spectrum show in spring 1977.....dead dominated that facilty....

@dosed1dosed1000 I am really sorry for your loss. I lost my brother, who was with me at all the Vegas shows. The song He's Gone makes me cry. take care:)
How many times did I wait in line all day, to be first inside to stand in my spot in front of Jerry (I mean directly in front of Jerry!)? Over 100 anyway. I can't hear no baby cry today.
hahahahha your an idiot man.. piggy was the one who never did drugs.. he tripped on acid once when jerry slipped him one without piggy knowing and he was pissed.. as trey would say.. READ A FUCKING BOOK
@cklein121 He tripped many more times then once in the mid sixties, you are right though he didn't like drugs. the time you are referring to is the last time he did it. the one where someone in the bands crew slipped it to him. Jerry didn't slip it to him. Pigpen couldn't go onstage. Jerry was furious because Pig was not into it and was having a bad trip and no one would own up to it
i agree. keith only played piano. pig was awesome in the early days but didn't develop with the band and was dope sick. welnick just sucked. brent and bruce were the best keyboardist in my opnion.

Yes. Back then nobody else in the band did though. Pig was overweight in the 60's and skinny as a rail in the 70's. After Europe '72 he was too sick to perform and died a few months after that. Brilliant bluesman gone too soon.
Hey man I love Pig but it's documented. Read Phil's book "Searching For The Sound". The irony is that Jerry started using casually right after Pig died.
@GraachAhim Great parkinglot scene too. The Philly Eagles were playing next door and all the football freaks came out and partied with us . Good harmony!.
@gregoryjamesaustin I was at that show and it meant a lot to me. I was going through a nasty divorce at the time and the ex wouldn't let me see my kids. @CaptainShays yeah no one has yet to come close to jerry but hopefully before we die we'll catch the next grate jam man no 1 does it like jerry 2 me ya know(well yeah actually u do 200+ )unfortunately i didnt jump on board till 92 at the age of 17 until highgate and the meadowlands 95.
@womenrsmarter420 I was at those shows. Saw a beautifull rainbow walking in. Jumped for joy then nearly broke my ankle when I landed. Will never forget it. I danced the whole time with a screwed up ankle. There will never be another Jerry. Maybe we'll see him again in Heaven
@CaptainShays love the stories i was crackin up readin your post could picture it happening...your ankle must've been swollen for a week???grate stuff capt
Was lucky enough to be in the taper's pit for this one.
The Dew was the first tune out of space, and it ended the show! Don't think that ever happened before or after that show. They had blown a whole in the fabric of the night and it was time to just put down the instruments. They did a quick Midnight hour afterwards for an encore and everybody went home blown away.
Love how Jerry works the feedback into that first solo. What a shred!
just the red shirt - jerry was always known for years for wearing a black t-shirt - somewhere around '85-'86 he started occasionally wearing a red one, which usually turned out to be a smoking hot show (not that they all weren't, but you know...)
Holy sh*t........ concise, intense, and brilliant. Incredible, and the crowd knows it. I was living near Philly at the time but missed this, must have gone to another night of the run. But here it is now. :-)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this song was written in the 60's by a Preacher who saw the end of the world from a nuclear war with the Russians. Today, we've got so many outlaws screwing around with nukes that we're facing a pre-radioactive and Post-radioactive world. Forget Global warming, an ugly man-made radiated Hell is what we're facing now. Watching your loved-ones die as they foam at the mouth in your arms- Enjoy the beauty of the world while you still can-Guess it doesn't matter anyway. I love Jerry-too cool guitar
I thought that this song was from a book written by an author by the name of Nevil Shute titled " On The Beach" . I guess it doesnt matter anyway. Love the song!!!
Hi trey, you could be right but that's my recollection on who authored it. If you want to see the movie, watch "On the Beach" (2 versions) 0ne made in the 60's, the other in the 90's, the later is more graphic and well-done and it's a living nightmare. This is probably the saddest song I've ever heard. Hope I didn't ruin your day. Bummer, man. Peace.
I was at these shows in Phila! My friends and I never missed an opportunity to see the Grateful Dead when they were in town! It was always a memorable experience to hear the best jam band the world has every heard!
excellent!! was at this show -- oddly was also right around this angle -- this Dew closed a SHORT set with (a High Time) and we are all wtf? Jerome and Brent were on fire plainly - then they came out with a mid tempo Midnight Hour encore so- so // best 80's Dew -- Hampton Roads 4-14-84 that one will really steal your face!!
When Jerry died, Rolling Stone did an entire tribute edition. Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane called Garcia a Christian troubador, or something like that. The Dead hated to be labeled as anything but crazy, but I suspect Jesus and Jerry are jammin' these days while the rest of us sit down here complaining about our secular discomforts. Jesus said he was The Light, and I dare say this music is the sound of light, so maybe there's more to the connection than meets the "I."
come hear Uncle Johns(john the baptist?) band, playing thru the night,.....he's come to take his children home...10/22/89..the force was strong..Jerry was like a prophet, singing the voice of God...after the show I met a man with a black dog, lingering in a culvert,..
and hades was written above Him..
i said to him"it seems there something special going on here tongiht"
he said the connection was very strong..it will be even stronger in Florida...
ripples in still water, there is no pebble tossed, no wind did blow..if you hear my voice, coming thru the music, perhaps my words are better left unsung, but let it be known , there is a highway, that was not made by the hands of men.
A box of rain(holy spirit) will ease the pain, and love will see you thru.. if your cup be full, may it be again..let me show you how it's gonna be, when you give your love to me..my love's for real, not a fadeaway...listen...
i always hear this as a song Jesus Christ sang to Mary......
can't walk you out, thot i heard a baby cry this morning, heard a young man moan today, where have all the people gone...there's no need for you to be worrying about all those people...
this was another great show I remember trippin hard and peakin during the dew

Red shirt came about after his drug bust in GG Park in late 1984.
1985 in the Red Shirt was one of the most ripping GD years of all time, every show is worth a listen.
I remember! RIP to the late legend, Jerry Garcia!

What a shred!

can somebody tell me about 'trouble ahead, jerry in red'.
I've heard it a few times, what is it?
FullMetalMirror 2 years ago
just the red shirt - jerry was always known for years for wearing a black t-shirt - somewhere around '85-'86 he started occasionally wearing a red one, which usually turned out to be a smoking hot show (not that they all weren't, but you know...)

Holy sh*t........ concise, intense, and brilliant. Incredible, and the crowd knows it. I was living near Philly at the time but missed this, must have gone to another night of the run. But here it is now. :-)

This is probably the greatest version I´ve heard of this fabulous song. And I always assumed 80´s Dead was inferior to 60´s and 70´s Dead . . .

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this song was written in the 60's by a Preacher who saw the end of the world from a nuclear war with the Russians. I love Jerry-too cool guitar
stcruz007 2 years ago
I thought that this song was from a book written by an author by the name of Nevil Shute titled " On The Beach" . I guess it doesnt matter anyway. Love the song!!!
Trey1013 2 years ago
Hi trey, you could be right but that's my recollection on who authored it. If you want to see the movie, watch "On the Beach" (2 versions) 0ne made in the 60's, the other in the 90's, the later is more graphic and well-done and it's a living nightmare. This is probably the saddest song I've ever heard. Hope I didn't ruin your day. Bummer, man. Peace.

Its a humbling thing about eternal love.

it was written by a Canadian singer/songwriter named Bonnie Dobson...

I was at these shows in Phila! My friends and I never missed an opportunity to see the Grateful Dead when they were in town! It was always a memorable experience to hear the best jam band the world has every heard!
DavidS1231 2 years ago
excellent!! was at this show -- oddly was also right around this angle -- this Dew closed a SHORT set with (a High Time) and we are all wtf? Jerome and Brent were on fire plainly - then they came out with a mid tempo Midnight Hour encore so- so // best 80's Dew -- Hampton Roads 4-14-84 that one will really steal your face!!

It is the rarest of occurences when you hear a crowd as loud as one at a Dead show. Seger in Detroit (only) comes to mind, and that's about it.

i saw them in 1981, omg, can u beleave this, he only has 3 fingers, nice playing jerry :)

Jesus said he was The Light, and I dare say this music is the sound of light, so maybe there's more to the connection than meets the "I."

yeah i know highway meant for your steps alone, fountain?..it's been a long time..listen to Supertramp//Even in The Quietest Moments...
"Everyone was laughing, until the day He died, His wounds run deep, but still he's calling..us out of our sleep, my friend you're not alone..
he waits in silence to call us all HOMEEE...?
The Holy Spirit speaks everywhere, if You listen.
the cool thing is God(being in our minds)has no problem forgiving us, judging us, or condemning..He is Us...the whole time

come hear Uncle Johns(john the baptist?) band, playing thru the night,.....he's come to take his children home...10/22/89..the force was strong..Jerry was like a prophet, singing the voice of God...after the show I met a man with a black dog, lingering in a culvert,..
and hades was written above Him..
i said to him"it seems there something special going on here tongiht"
he said the connection was very strong..it will be even stronger in Florida...
God spoke thru Jerry...

let's see..10/22/89 Charlotte...
ripples in still water, there is no pebble tossed, no wind did blow..if you hear my voice, coming thru the music, perhaps my words are better left unsung, but let it be known , there is a highway, that was not made by the hands of men.
A box of rain(holy spirit) will ease the pain, and love will see you thru.. if your cup be full, may it be again..let me show you how it's gonna be, when you give your love to me..my love's for real, not a fadeaway...listen...

can't walk you out, thot i heard a baby cry this morning, heard a young man moan today, where have all the people gone...there's no need for you to be worrying about all those people...
