Good job my fellow musician! Excellent explanation my friend. I knew how to play this already, but I just wanted to make sure it was correct. And this is definitely a perfect guide to learning this excellent song! Keep up the good work man.
Warren : )))) I've been looking for the right chords to this one for ages... Thank you so much, you are like the 8th member of the band for us guitarists wanna be's, the link between the band's music and our avid fingers... THANK YOU SIR !!

I have tried to learn tones and tones of diffrent Radiohead, MUSE, and Pixies songs no to advail... this tutorial has been the best one i have ever watched and now i can acturally play somthing.
Hi Warren, I can't figure what Jonny plays at the beggining of the second verse, literally at the very start, at about 1:30 into the tune. Just wondering if you can help me out. Cheers.
hey warren, sorry about your acoustic. i got a question i've been asking around on - do you know how radiohead gets their haunting sound on guitar, which starts at 3:41 of weird fishes(basement version)
wondering if its a pedal or what? thanks to you or anyone else who knows.
@HEMAPDX I believe that's Ed using a Fernandes Sustainer Kit. You could probably reproduce that particular sound with an E-Bow. Either way, you should put some delay/reverb on there...
Nice tutorial, Warren - as usually clear and helpful. But why don't you play the bass strings in the chorus? I've just checked Radiohead's version in "From the Basement" and Thom definitely doesn't mute them (at least the 6th string), you can clearly see that.
I think there's something extremely shamanic in this song, the rhythm and the bass notes (I mean open 5th and 6th strings). It seems to me it's important to play those notes during the whole song - thus you get that shamanic atmosphere.
Yeah, I dunno about shamanic... But maintaining the vibe can be important in a cover. Other times, it is nice to make it your own by changing up significant elements, I think.
@warrenmusic about shamanic I think what ArtemiusVerrueckte means is the constant humming bass in the song when you play the 5th and 6th strings (kinda like the constant underlying bass you hear in a bagpipe or didgeridoo).
My guitar is without a cut in, I find it difficult to mute the low E when playing the when the guitars neck is stopping my thumb from reaching up. _______ ( ) x ___
( |x|||||||||||||||||||||//// (_______)
U probably got it but it was fun making a guitar here anyway...
So my question is since, I'm going to try doing it some way else is there a preferred way of doing it? Now I'm trying to mute it with my long finger, but is there a better way?
I'm not sure what part you're referring to, but you don't need a cutaway on either side of the guitar to play up on the 10th fret. You can try to avoid strumming the 6th string but it's easier and better, techinque-wise, to mute.
Hmm, I highly doubt this... an open E is clearly heard in every one of the first six chord shapes during the intro/outro section. Where did you hear this?
Yeah, I disagree. Chorus is only two strings "Try the best you can" (2B and 4D) and the main riff, which only uses three strings (3G, 5A, and 6D). The intro clearly uses a 1E. Whoever said that probably figured out another way of playing the song, different from Radiohead.
Hey Warren which Atoms For Peace show are you going to? I'm seeing their SB show and I saw their first show at the Orpheum and they were everything you're hoping they'll be and more...Thanks for another fantastic tutorial buddy!
In the section of the song where you are just playing muted strings, Jonny plays a gliss over a certain chord in the live versions. care to help me figure out what that chord is?
Jonny only plays three of the four notes that the keyboard plays (on the album version). The keyboard plays a descending D, C, Bb, and A, where Jonny leaves out the Bb. To do so, it seems he downtunes his 1st string to D.
Weird, I just wrote a song that reminds me of Optimistic, and I just came Home and I was listening to this one on my mp3 player... I like how life is...
5* thanks Warren!! Hey can you help me tab some stuff ? like Follow me Around and Twisted Words ? I would be willing to pay ya a reasonable fee for your professional services. Thanks!
Can you put the chords in the info? Its slightly annoying to keep rewinding to make out '0 0 10 x 10 0 0' and the other ones lol.
