ok just to clear things up: robotnik was called eggman from the very beggining,but only in japan, so sonic team decided to create a little side story when SA1 came out in america by saying "Sonic and his friends mock him with the nickname "Eggman" to make fun of his shape"

in fact, he refers to himself as dr. ivo robotnik in SA1 in one of the cutscenes. look it up if you don't believe me.

No, Eggman is actually a decendant form Robonitk, some other believe he's actually Ivo Robotnik (This Robotnik's father)
