Ever since the pageant was revamped in '98, they have been choosing contestants with more "Western appeal". (I guess) Thailand also two Miss Universe titles, 1965 and 1988.

What is going on here is that what most Japanese people consider "beautiful and attractive" is very different from what western cultures consider " asian beauty".
