Is that only this particular approach or have the approach patterns been changed since the 1980's and early 90's for being less noisy. I can remember when I was a kid in the 80's and returning from holidays with my parents. Watching the flaps come out more and more and engines throttling up. Just like on this clip. They almost seemed to accelerate at some point or flying level for a long time. Before suddenly easing and touching down. Now a days they just glide down smoothly. As I recollect.
I heve fly on these old airplaine , my friend davis he is the pilote and he fly these old beoing 727 like this one, they heve to scrap these plane now as they are use to much of the petrols, also the dans airways does not exist at this time.
This is amazing - thanks for posting. I am living for the day that someone posts a similar set of videos taken from inside one of the last charter passenger DC-8s that were still flying in the 90s. I'm sure someone filmed a flight on one, although if you look on the net, there is not even ONE such film showing a takeoff and landing with a wing view. Plenty of 707 films, but nothing on the DC-8. So I'm still holding out plenty of hope. Cheers!
my 1st flight was in 1971 luton to ibiza court line 1-11 we had to turn back over the channel as there was a slight crack in the pilots windscreen it took 6 hours to repair then we were off again!!!! So 2 take offs and landings in one day for my 1st flight bloody brilliant i was hooked on aircraft then!!!! I have many memorys of 1-11's court line and dan air flights i took...........visited the flight deck on many occasions times have changed so much it's a different world............
What a strange landing, he seemed to WANT to keep speed to get a good head of steam for the taxi roll. He was still hauling ass halfway down the runway and seemed to use almost no reverse thrust.
I also notice the wing on this plane is something like that of the Lockheed L-1011. I wonder if the latter borrowed some ideas from it? It's definitely a different idea from the Boeing and Douglas wings.
I agree, and no reverse thrust??.... I read somewhere the rear engined jet aircraft needed to maintain airspeed on approach with higher thrust settings....The B-727 experienced a series of early accidents resulting from reducing thrust on approach and finding themselves in sink rates that couldn't be arrested by full power.
@antimatterXXXIII I think they were fitted with reverse, maybe not used, due to excessive noise (they ARE noisy! The engines alone are enough), and maybe because the fuel load was light enough to not require it
@1970sPlaneSpotter Thank you so much for this. Fantastic!! Seems as if we're flying. Extraordinary footage of the beloved "One Eleven." America's Braniff and Mohawk knew they had a winner when they chose the British BAC 1-11 over the DC-9.
I don't understand why the engines start screaming just before touchdown, after the flaps reach their final setting? I know you have to accelerate there to overcome drag, but that much??? Why not just use less flap?
@jgrab1 A lot of planes need at least 50% power with full flaps. With all the drag, the aircraft does tend to slow down a bit. You can't use less flaps UNLESS the plane is landing at higher speeds (instead of full flaps+130knots, you would have 3/4 flaps and 150knots)
I can't describe how I feel when I watch this. Having worked at Manchester airport for almost 2 years from April 2008 (todays modern gateway to the world), this is amazing to see.....the retro aircraft is just the icing on the cake. Thank you for posting this video, the old ones are the best!!
I flew on G-BJYM and G-BJMV as DA2830/1 BHX-ALC-BHX in 1985. It seemed much noisier on board than in this video! I seem to remember the announcements from the crew saying "After landing you will notice an increase in engine noise due to the reverse thrust slowing the aircraft down".
Woh....the high speed landing....did the BAC have to be landed on that power? Seems dramatic and unnecessary?? Then cut off engine power bounce bounce...."this is a totally different kinda flying...all together!....This is a totally different kinda flying"
That was an incredibly fast approach!. Awesome engine sounds. They don't make 'em like that anymore :(. God damn airport residents and their noise complaints.
That's a difficult question really , without knowing the exact registration - as dan Air Operated about 27 different airframes over several differing variants - could be anything from 1965 right up the early seventies - sorry can't be anymore specific
I Fix parts for BAC 1-11 for two customers they are such a pain in the backside!! the manuals are hard to get but when you do they are written in an alien language and even then practically are the parts are none existent except for customer supplied parts...shame really!
Unusual landing sequence - full flaps followed immediately by what sounded like full power - had they misjudged the approach angle? Or is this SOP for One-Elevens?
Standard for 1-11's the final stage of flap is designed to allow short field operations, however the final stage is high drag, therefore a large amount of power is required to overcome the drag induced by the flaps
I was talking about my first flight not this one, chances are it was and yes I used to see PJ in Liverpool often, Its a pity we cant confirm it. I just love simon's vids and told him so. I wonder if he knows which 1-11 it was? Simon - over to you
Brilliant,i have not flown on a Bac 1-11 since the begining of the 1970's,it was a rare treat just to watch that video and listen to those Rolls Royce spey engines again, the aeroplanes today are boring too bloody quiet if you ask me,great stuff .
@johnwood57 Yep, I second that last part of your comment. Among today's aircraft, the loudest one (in my own view) that's flying these days is the twin-engine MD-82, and even that is nothing compared to the BAC 1-11 noise. BAC 1-11s were at least 3 times noisier than the MD-82s taking off.
I still service a BAC -111 for a small company, Luckily the customer has a warehouse full of parts!! The IPC and component manuals are an absolute pain to work with!!!
was the stewardess/hostess/flight attendant seat at the forward door of the aircraft for one person or 2? was there a jumpseat at the rear like on DC-9/727????
The seat at the front was a double, forward facing at the left hand door. There was a single seat at the rear, not on the door like the 727, but a strange fold out thing that stowed behind the back row of seats on the right. If there was a fourth crewmember they sat in an overwing seat row aisle seat.
Wow that's quite amazing as, according to your profile, you were born in 1990. So you were two when you stopped flying for Dan Air and switched to Monarch. Incredible what children can do these days.

I loved flying on them, they were unique, if only the noise restrictions hadn't ended the day for this great aircraft. Great engine sound, so familiar and really nice to see the British Airtours 737-200 on the tarmac on landing. Thanks once again for this.
Fantastic Video. Love the engine sounds. Also great to see an Airtours MD83 towards the end taxying out. It's wierd seeing Manchester Airport without T2 and the Thomas Cook hangars etc. We defo went back in time with this video. Thank You.
Dan Air London, man that brings back some memories. I must of flew with them at least 10 times maybe more!. All i remember about the 1-11 is that they were bloody noisey and always smelt of strong aviation fuel!!. Who remembers the rear automatic staircase!. I always sat at the back coz my dad is a smoker so we always got the loud noise from the rear mounted engines. I loved Dan Air classic British airline, gone but not forgotton.

Yes, Romania did produce a handful (under a dozen), but as late as the 1980s. They were called ROMBAC 1-11s. I believe one is still flying in Somalia or Djibouti.
