Bill McCluskey had these ads down cold. Nobody before or after him came close to his performances. I'd like to see him brought back. Imagine him popping up after all these years, still looking for the worlds best tuna.
I never noticed until years after I first saw the commercial when I was a teenager, that the Japanese guy doesn't need "Well what am I doing here?" translated, which suddenly made me think that the punchline was a lot more subtle and funnier than I first thought.
I reckon that the Japanese guy fully understood English all along, but was only pretending to need a translator in the hopes that the annoying tourist would go away. That would also explain the impatient look on his face at the start.
Oh Yes top work mate!!! BTW I saw the guy from this ad in a Cafe in Freo a few years back and that Japanese guy started a catch phrase only a certain generation would understand.
It's good when you watch an old tape from the 80's & there's a set of ads on it. You usually remember them all
