Just updated mine to KDE SC 4.4.5, and then KDE 4.5 around the bend. Feels good seeing the progress both with KDE, Xorg and Linux core itself from a rolling release point of view! :)
Yes, the widget system, QT, is actually quite a good piece of software. KDE 4, with the very much user-visible parts, namely Dolphin and Plasma are clunky, unstable, feature-lacking and resource-hungry.
I've been crying ever since the release of KDE 4.0, because while KDE 3 (like KDE 2 before it) was powerful and a joy to use, the entire KDE 4 series has been flaky, missing core features of the previous releases and focused on eye candy while ignoring usability.
So... The idea behind the KDE 4 series is that instead of running applications in windows, you're re-implementing them as applets on the desktop at huge performance penalty.
Of course, it's your project, you can do with it what you wish, the same way I'd be free to drive nails through my genitals if I wanted.
But the way I see it you've taken the best Linux desktop ever created and made it into an unworkable, resource-hungry and unstable multimedia freakshow.
I'm GNOME user myself, but KDE4.3 a great piece of software. I'm trying it out and I've found it great so far. KDE is the most advanced graphic environment I've ever seen. Still, GNOME suits me better for everyday work, but since we can enjoy both of those environments, I see no reason not to have both of them on a single system. What was a surprise for me is how fast new KDE is.
i think kde is a great effort and has come a very long way. it is much more modern and featureful than gnome, but i still don't think i'll ever prefer it. as soon as i get a laptop, i'll be installing pc-bsd using kde4 but more for educational reasons than anything. i just don't like kde because i find it too... gimmicky. its nice, but theres so much about it i wouldn't ever use. i also don't find its organization to be as fluent as gnome's. i do however wonder why kde is so unpopular
Because KDE 4.0, userwise, was crap. KDE 4.1 was a lot less crap, KDE 4.2 was good, and KDE 4.3 is this... you can pretty imagine how the quality of KDE 4.4 will be...
actually i've been lightly messing around with kde3.x and i like it a lot better than 4.x. it doesn't have most of the things i don't like about 4.x. i suppose if i want to be familiar with kde, i should start with 3 since i find it more simple and easier to use, and move up to 4 when i find it more acceptable
Very sexy indeed! I've always been in love with the Kde feel, a shame it seems to be so slow on its 4.x version. I tried 4.2 but after a pitiful performance I decided to move back to gnome. Maybe I should try out this new 4.3...
And your system seems to be as slow as mine was Alessandro. What machine config are you running?
It would be nice if you could tell us your system specs. Mine isn't even mid-end now - AMD Sempron LE-1150 (1 core), ATI Radeon HD 4550 and 4 GB RAM, Fedora 11, but KDE 4.3 is fast as hell. Only 422 MB of RAM is used at the moment. Unfortunately, can't test desktop effects due to crappy ATI drivers.
I ran kde 4.2 on a pentium 4 2.8GHz, 1.5 Gb RAM, firstly with openSUSE 11 (kde 4.1) and later on Kubuntu 8.10 on it. Memory usage would always hit the 1gb mark. It was slow both on startup and shutting down, Kwin effects were slow as well, but I know they'd be much much better if I had a video card installed.
I wonder if testing it on a kde-specific distro would've helped, perhaps I should try sabayon's next version (they're on kde 4.1 now, I think)
Never had a computer with integrated video card so probably that's the reason for slowdown. Some plasmoids can also cause 100% CPU usage. Anyway, I suggest you giving it a try.
Yeah, you're probably right on that. I never had the need to buy this machine a videocard since compiz and everything else run smoothly without it. But I'll give it a try!

Air theme is too milky glass style. It is quite unconvenient on a screen smaller than he usual 20 " nowadays.

I run KDE 4.3 on an AMD Athlon @900 Mhz, with 384 MB of RAM and a 7 year old NVIDIA. It's pretty legacy, yet it can run without an issue.
Your performance problem, like Reloaded211 said, might be related with the video card.
