Dances were held for royalty in Japan, if a ninja needed to get close, or have access to the temple etc, he may have gone undercover (like police etc do today), which may have included dancing. Playing the role and selling yourself is 90% of stealth. It would allow them to watch their surroundings, gather intel, and access areas previously inaccessable, to accomplish their mission. That's a little wacky.... strange too that the guy leading the thing also happened to be the worst dancer. Seemed the best at the martical arts skill tho, which is probably why he was leading. The Bo work was quite impressive.
