Joe is pronouncing it correctly (both pronunciations are accepted, actually, but the preferred one is regionally dependent). The folks who live in the Appalachian mountains in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee (at least) all say it the same as Joe. :-) If you don't believe me - ask the folks at Appalachian State University in NC how they pronounce the first word of their name.
No, no, NO. It's not "Appa- lay-chin." It's never been "Appa-lay-chin." The only people who pronounce it "Appa-lay-chin" aren't from around here.
