@deathkampdrone It still is, it's just not called obstruction anymore: "It is an offence to restrict the movement of the goalkeeper by unfairly impeding him, e.g. at the taking of a corner kick."
@TheHestemand I know. But these days the term doesnt really apply to anybody but the keeper. However, in this case it WAS the keeper who got obstructed, which makes it even more obvious. What the hell... I guess I never really recovered from this huge disappointment. Having said that, the danish team should have won it earlier in the match. We just have a history with Spain. They always fuck us straight in the butt. Euro84, WC86, Sevilla93, and also in more recent qualifiers... :(
This game was all about one man: GK Santiago Cañizares. Had Zubi (overrated!) not been ejected, maybe Denmark goes through. Instead, it was Santi's show. This game launched his pro career.
@weatherallc05 hahahaha those 3 average players to 2xLaudrup, Povlsen and Schmeichel. Spain won the game because of Bakero's cheat and be generally overall sucking 1% less than Denmark. It is sad that three brilliant offensive players did not have good enough support from the players behind.
@Magicmoose2001 thats what i mean, hierro was world class defensively and yet who denmark have? you got to have all round ability in a team, and denmark only had attacking flair. and come on you really think bakero cheated. he slightly knocked peter over and he made a meal of it. sorry but thats just what i think
ahhhh i love how much of a sad story this is being made to be, because apparently this danish team was immense. it had one immense player, but lets be honest spain had loads of them
@jikkh2x bakero, guardiola, hierro. fuck youuuuu lolll guardiola was an admirable player and hierro is arguably an all time great centre back. all u had was laudrup!
@jikkh2x guardiola was part of cruyffs dream team WITH BAKERO and Bergiristian, which as you know was very successful. and how were spain average?? they are in the same bracket as brazil, holland and germany. for me those four teams are the powerhouses of football right now. france and italy were, but now they have lost their stars
@ancientbattle Being unable to see Michael Laudrup and Peter Schmeichel (the best goalie at the moment) at the World Cup in USA was a definite shame. I'm sure they would have gone far.
The goalie is running at Bakero (who is not even looking at him), and it all happens outside the 6yd box. Had the ref blown the whistle it would have been to award Spain a penalty.
@aeiou333999 Bakero himself would disagree with you. He said later that it was a free kick and that he did it on purpose. And in an interview with Danish television after the game, Ferrer conceded that it looked like a free kick.
It was a foul on Schmeichel if you watch it carefully the player backs into him, the player knew what he was doing. But saying that Schmeichel should have never ever come out of the 6 yard area to receive the ball, it was a stupid mistake that cost Denmark the match.
I am not a big supporter of the Spanish national team, but I have serious doubts regarding all the comments stating that there was a foul against Smeichel. The goalkeeper is untouchable inside the small penalty area (I am not sure whether this is its correct name in english), if a player of the opposing team just touches him, it's foul. But outside it, It's like any other player, and I believe that you are allowed just to stand in front of him to obstaculize his movement. Just my opinion.
@MrSoerensen94 ermmm but you had chances to score in those games, soo enough of the excuses. i know i know, every team makes excuses but denmark are still a great team and dont need to make excuses
I can't see any Irish cunts crying like they did in WC 2010 qualifiers... And yet they qualified here because of a mistake of the referee... Denmark is a great football team, and the Laudrups and Schmeichel were the best payers in the world at their position in this time. I'll always prefer to see Denmark play a football game than those crying Irish babies...
And also Northern Ireland let Ireland score to 1-1 in there match. And Denmark had Michael Laudrup who didnt score on chances he normaly scores on in Barcelona, he like Spain mor than Denmark
I still hate Bakero this day today. Probably the biggest disappointment ever for followers of the Danish national team. This one, along with the Euro 84 loss after penalty shoot out and the 1-5 loss in Mexico 86. And it's always been against Spain.
Spain, I love your food and you've got an amazing country with lovely people...but I hate your football team with passion.
@tienefuego Yeah, and Holland should have been at Euro 84 anyway, Spain needed an 11 goal margin against Malta to qualify, conceded early on for 1-1... ooh, guess what, Spain won 12-1, NOT a fix ha ha ha. Imagine a semi final between your team, and young Gullit, van Basten, Rijkaard, Koeman, and maybe even Willy v.d. Kerkhof who was still around then and who knows, Cruyff who'd just won the double with Feyenoord. Holland have been robbed by Spain too ;-)
@SeventiesMania Damn, didn't know about that. I just found the clip from the 12-1 match here on Youtube.
Are you Dutch? I went to Amsterdam a few years ago and visited the Dutch football museum. Really really enjoyed it...but why was it all in Dutch? Didn't they expect non-Dutch speaking tourists there?
@tienefuego Not Dutch, just English fan of the Oranje for 32 years lol. Lots of us about. Mind you, got lots of abuse one day in 1988 when I started cheering during Marco's hat-trick against England as we all watched in the school common room ;-)
Yeah, that is a flaw in the museum. They shouldn't have given it to Ajax, it should be in de Kuip! :)
@SeventiesMania Ah OK. Do you support any English teams? I follow Charlton Athletic (spent 8 years in South East London - now I'm in Australia though)
I remember him as a violent player who should have been sent off after Elkjærs winning goal against Belgium in Euro 1984. Check it out here on you tube.
There is a reason why some people love talking rubish about Spain, and that is because we are now at the top of Europe and the World. And we, recognised by people who truly understand football, playing very well. It is difficult to score one every single team plays defensively against you, even Portugal and Germany. Spain played amazingly in the Eurocup but lost the “surprise factor” in the World Cup and every game was hard work to break the defence, and that is why it feels even better to win.
I really love Laudrup, one of my favorite players, very elegant and as you said, a shame for a great generation of Danish players luck and goalkeepers also count in football. Actually, I´m Spanish but I hate that Spanish team, my least favorite, the coach was an idiot, the team too physical and defensive and he left Michel out. So nothing against you my friend but some of the comments here are stupid and only prove how jealous some people are, especially England and other losers.
How ironic! hahaha Spain qualified for the WC with the help of a cheat from Bakero and they got eliminated (in part, not totally) by a referee who didn't saw the elbow on Luis Enrique's face hahahaha. The worst of all is that they always complain about that elbow, they don´t seem to remember how they qualified.
@EdwardTheFat So Spain sucks, you say?? LOL Because in the last two years we've managed to either equal or surpass WORLD records? Because in the last two years we've won two out of three major international tournaments? Are you going to say now that all of Mexico's CONCACAF titles are worth more than Euros? HAHAHA
Let's forget Bakero. But if you still want to talk about CHEATING then let's discuss what happened to Mexico prior to Italia '90. Shall we?
Official games: DEN 1-2 SPA 1974 SPA 2-0 DEN 1975 (France 84) SPA 1-1 DEN 1984 (won Spain on penalties) (Mexico 86) SPA 5-1 DEN 1986 (Germany 88) SPA 3-2 DEN 1988 DEN 1-0 SPA 1993 SPA 1-0 DEN 1993 SPA 3-0 DEN 1994 DEN 1-1 SPA 1995 SPA 2-1 DEN 2007 DEN 1-3 SPA 2007 I think Denmark deserved to win in France Euro 1984 (lost by penalties) and in 1993 (lost 0-1) in Sevilla.
@DJMicDaddy So what do you think is the worst moment in football for Denmark? Bearing in mind this video was made two years ago so losing to Japan wouldnt count.
@BobCassidy The worst moment is either Bakero's "unseen" freekick on Schmeichel or Jesper Olsen's backpass in 86. By not qualifying in 93 we missed out on our only chance to see our finest player ever play a WC when he was at the peak of his abilities. And in 86 we truly had a team that could have become World Champions. Losing against Japan doesn't even compare since we simply weren't good enough to make an impact anyway. We were too old, too slow, and too weak and Japan deserved their win.
@llaauuddrruupp Aaaaaaaaaaah, the back pass, but you were hammered in the end anyway. But maybe things would have been different without that horrible goal. We beat Italy in that world cup and did nothing else. We were shocking. Absolutely ran out of ideas against Mexico and Holland. Would have been nice to see the European champions at the world cup. Again, cant believe this is the first time for me to see highlights of this game. Back in the day I didnt care, I just was glad we were through.
@llaauuddrruupp Ah, I don't think Denmark could've become Champions in 1986. Danes tend to overexagerate the ability of their national team, especially after 1992. Denmark played against two teams of any quality in 1986 - West Germany and Spain. They won against the Germans and lost, deservedly, to Spain. They weren't that good...
@kobadelhi With what team? I mean, they had Laudrup, Elkjær, Lerby, Olsen and Arnesen - that's it. On paper, they were no match for the likes of Argentina, Italy, Belgium, France, the Soviet Union, Germany, England, Brazil or even Hungary. A nice little team, who played the underdog role really, really well, but no match for the real classy teams...
Jaysus, never even thought about watching this game before. I just remember seeing Spains goal and cheering. Denmark destroyed them. Some great stops by Canizares.
i) Peter Schmeichel was all over the place with that goal.
ii) I'm glad Hierro scored and it wasn't some real ugly, fluky goal.
iii) How ironic for Michael Laudrup. He was one of the best players in La Liga at the time with Barcelona and then Real Madrid. And here it's Spain of all teams that shatters his World Cup dream. He probably thought at the time he'd never play in another WC seeing he was already 30 yrs.
I think denmark had a fair rub of the green themselves when they DIDNT QUALIFY FOR EURO 92 yet ended up champions...intresting fact...the only unbeaten team throughout euro 92 was the republic of ireland.
After that Ireland got bad luck for Euro 96 ( all the seconds of each group qualified for that Euro except Ireland ) ; World cup 98 and Euro 2000 in play off !
Spain was unlucky in world cup 2002 but they deserved to be out in the quarter final !
Although the keeper was suspended you can't really call Canizares a "reserve" he was a very good keeper and would in any other team have been first choice. They were very blessed with to have such a "problem".
i didnt understand all the video, spain got only one corner kick they scored on it when dernmark was dominating the match right? what explains this worst moment for the danish football, right?
@WrSpectre Denmark had won the European Championship in 92 and everybody where expecting great things from the team at the WC. But then we didnt qualify because of this loss. Which was a huge dissapointment for everybody in Denmark since the football fever was still raging after the 92 win.
I remember this match very well.. The danish press went crazy of Bakeros illegal(more or less)foul against Schmeichel... It was really depressing mood for couple days.. haha.. Football is so crazy.
It's incedible that Denmark, at few times, couldn't play against Spain. It's a veritale taboo!! Better players, better football, but Spain always can stop the danish Team!
Acctually it was a sad moment for football. With Denmark World Cup in 1994 would be much more exiting. NAd denes never managed to go back to this level
One month earlier Spain had to play in Dublin and I remember the situation well - If Ireland had won Spain were out and Denmark would have qualified. Ireland were favourites as they outplayed Spain away. I was at the match and the Spanish came out fighting and were 3-up after 25 minutes. A complete shock. The game finished 3-1 to Spain.
Schmeichel rarely does that sort of bad mistake...I did't know Michael was in the team for 1994, I thought he had a bust-up with the FA. He was excellent in France 1998. Despite having Michael Laudrup back after 1992 without him, Spain are Denmark's bogey team..it was a follow-on from the 1986 loss.I think the Spanish destroyed the Danes 5-1 then after being 0-1 down, only themselves to lose to Belgium in the quarter-finals.
The Spain goalie in 1984 final made a terrible error too Luis Arconada he had a good reputation, but floated over a Platini freekick that lost them the match really.
True Zubi's error in 1998 was terrible (against the Nigerians)..
Must've been an abolute sickener for the rooligans. We (Ireland) had to play NI in Belfast that night in what were bad old days up there. I remember the foreign media beforehand seemed to think NI would let us win! Absurd. Would Portugal 'lie down' for Spain? Or Sweden for Denmark? They threw the kitchen sink at us but we got a draw and it was enough to earn our place ... and earn it we did! Pity our main striker did his knee and couldn't play in USA'94.
I remember too how we thought Ireland would win easily. So we knew we had to get at least a draw. But so many things just worked against us in the end. We missed a handful of sitters, Schmeichel was fouled when they scored, the corner they scored from was a mistake to begin with, it should have been a goal kick. In the end we had the same points and same goal difference as you, but had scored less. Had we beaten Latvia or Lithuania 5-0 at home instead of 4-0 we would have qualified. Just cruel.
...without wanting to pour salt on the wound - I believe I'm correct in saying if todays rules applied back then our 'head-to-head' would have been used to separate us before goal difference ...I needn't tell you that means your 1-1 draw in Dublin would beat our 0-0 in Copenhagen and Denmark would've been on the plane to America.
That's exactly right. And Jose Bakero later admitting he fouled Schmeichel on purpose doesn't help dull the pain either...Or that all those elements put together meant that Denmark's greatest and most popular player of all time never got a chance to display his skills at a WC while at the peak of his abilities.
But oh well, at least we're on our way to South Africa now. If you win your play-offs perhaps we'll meet again :-)
i think Michael Laudrup was one of the greatest players to grace Mexico 1986, despite being a young player. His and Elkjaer's striking displays against Uruguay (South american champions) and involvement in easy the victory over the Germans (beat them 2-0) were legendary!!
The head-to-head rule doesn't apply (at least it didn't for the WC2010 qualification, where goal difference was more important than the head-to-head).
The problem is and was that Spain has so many good football players. One goalkeeper gets out and another woldclass goalkeeper steps in. With only 10 players they manage to win that match - well deserved - I cannot remember we have ever beaten Spain in a football match - its a nightmare he he.
We actually beat them in the first game in Denmark (1-0) in the WC94 qualification. But yes, Spain generally brings bad memories to us Danes. 1984, 1986, 1988 and then this game.
Spain played quarter finals against Italy. Yoy are a fucking idiot!!!! It played also against Germany, 1-1!! And you say that Spain made notingh? Shut up you fucking retarded!! Look the match against italy!!! Spain played better than italy and it lost 2-1. And in the last minute Tassoti broke Luis Enrique's nose and the referee didn't saw it!!! Learn before speaking!!
they got taken oyt by my italians, i remember this game ans its was denmark playing their hearts out i was 13 and when that guy did that scissor kick i was amazes cus it was my first time i see one in a game, spain won the euro and havnt lost so, there gonna talk alot of crap but my hats off to denmark in this game
@el69tufi ... a new champ was crowned..., but with 8 goals in 7 games... what the f...? the new football is so sh... and everybody talks about the champ like was a marbel, now is time for the real ones to stand up and show us for what is the reason we like the game, because if this is going to be like this, we have to celebrate the shots out of target instead of goals... The thing is that Spain was better in this tournament than the others, but is nothing to celebrate... we have to feel sorry...

Forget about Bakero's fault (yes it was a fault). The worse thing that happened to Denmark in this match was Zubizarreta being sent off.
With Zubizarreta in the goalie for the whole game, Denmark would have won or at least draw.

@DJMicDaddy So what do you think is the worst moment in football for Denmark? Bearing in mind this video was made two years ago so losing to Japan wouldnt count.
BobCassidy 1 year ago
@BobCassidy The worst moment is either Bakero's "unseen" freekick on Schmeichel or Jesper Olsen's backpass in 86. By not qualifying in 93 we missed out on our only chance to see our finest player ever play a WC when he was at the peak of his abilities. And in 86 we truly had a team that could have become World Champions. Losing against Japan doesn't even compare since we simply weren't good enough to make an impact anyway. We were too old, too slow, and too weak and Japan deserved their win.
llaauuddrruupp 1 year ago 5
@llaauuddrruupp Aaaaaaaaaaah, the back pass, but you were hammered in the end anyway. But maybe things would have been different without that horrible goal. We beat Italy in that world cup and did nothing else. We were shocking. Absolutely ran out of ideas against Mexico and Holland. Would have been nice to see the European champions at the world cup. Again, cant believe this is the first time for me to see highlights of this game. Back in the day I didnt care, I just was glad we were through.
BobCassidy 1 year ago
@BobCassidy Yep, we were hammered in the end, but the goal came at the worst time (just before halftime).
We had chances in the beginning of the 2nd half (and even after Spain went up 2-1), but when they scored their third goal, we fell apart.
tienefuego 1 year ago
@llaauuddrruupp
What a precise analysis.
I remember my friends and I revenging Bakeros freekick by causing some minor damage to the spanish factory Repsol in our hometown that same night.
That's how big the feeling of disappointment and beeing cheated was back then (bare in mind that we were teenagers not hooligans).
It truly was the worst moment in recent danish football history.
JakobSanvig 1 year ago
@llaauuddrruupp Finest player ever? You mean Brian Laudrup? You think he was better than Michael?
bugstrut 1 year ago
@llaauuddrruupp Ah, I don't think Denmark could've become Champions in 1986. Danes tend to overexagerate the ability of their national team, especially after 1992. Denmark played against two teams of any quality in 1986 - West Germany and Spain. They won against the Germans and lost, deservedly, to Spain. They weren't that good...
Proglove85 11 months ago
@Proglove85 ofc thats fair to say. but if u look closer at the 86 team.Denmark really could've won
kobadelhi 11 months ago
@kobadelhi With what team? I mean, they had Laudrup, Elkjær, Lerby, Olsen and Arnesen - that's it. On paper, they were no match for the likes of Argentina, Italy, Belgium, France, the Soviet Union, Germany, England, Brazil or even Hungary. A nice little team, who played the underdog role really, really well, but no match for the real classy teams...
Proglove85 11 months ago
Jaysus, never even thought about watching this game before. I just remember seeing Spains goal and cheering. Denmark destroyed them. Some great stops by Canizares.

My 2 cents:
i) Peter Schmeichel was all over the place with that goal.
ii) I'm glad Hierro scored and it wasn't some real ugly, fluky goal.
iii) How ironic for Michael Laudrup.

Luck is very important when teams are equals
Spain and Ireland were very lucky in 93 !
But for Euro 92 Denmark was lucky too !
After that Ireland got bad luck for Euro 96 ( all the seconds of each group qualified for that Euro except Ireland ) ; World cup 98 and Euro 2000 in play off !
Spain was unlucky in world cup 2002 but they deserved to be out in the quarter final !
Always lucky by the past !!!

Although the keeper was suspended you can't really call Canizares a "reserve" he was a very good keeper and would in any other team have been first choice. They were very blessed with to have such a "problem".

WrSpectre 2 years ago
@WrSpectre Denmark had won the European Championship in 92 and everybody where expecting great things from the team at the WC. But then we didnt qualify because of this loss. Which was a huge dissapointment for everybody in Denmark since the football fever was still raging after the 92 win.

I remember this match very well.. The danish press went crazy of Bakeros illegal(more or less)foul against Schmeichel... It was really depressing mood for couple days.. haha.. Football is so crazy.
malelion 2 years ago
i don't think that was an illegal foul. Bakero was standing outside the keeper's area doing nothing. And Schmeichel just ran into him.
It would have been a foul inside the keeper's box since you can't touch him inside. But he's clearly standing outside, if you watch again.
That is no foul on any count, but a legal goal. Denmark should have been able to convert one of their many chances.
watcher613 2 years ago
Bakero himself has on more than one occasion admitted that it was a foul and that he did it on purpose. But yes, Denmark should have scored.

But overall it seems organisation on set pieces have come a long way since then so maybe mistakenly it WAS his job to go for a ball like that.
He was already way out when the ball was kicked and seemed to have made his mind up. Overall the whole thing looks very strange.
saturnpepper 2 years ago
Watching it now again. Not having seen it for years.
Sadly it's more mistake by Schmeichel than foul by Bakero.
That's rarely a goal is just stays at his line. Ball is way out and not really in his range.
saturnpepper 2 years ago
What are you talking about? It's a clear foul. 19 out of 20 refs call it. Except maybe on Old Trafford if it's against United.
iamlrrr 2 years ago
Didn't say it wasn't a foul. Though I don't think it's a clear one.
I'm saying, likely there would never have been a goal if Schmeichel didn't give that ball a very ambitious chase.

The game finished 3-1 to Spain.
robert99999 2 years ago
Schmeichel rarely does that sort of bad mistake...I did't know Michael was in the team for 1994, I thought he had a bust-up with the FA. He was excellent in France 1998. Despite having Michael Laudrup back after 1992 without him, Spain are Denmark's bogey team..it was a follow-on from the 1986 loss.I think the Spanish destroyed the Danes 5-1 then after being 0-1 down, only themselves to lose to Belgium in the quarter-finals.

I think Zubizarreta was the worst goalkeeper in history (talking about Spain), and, without explanation, he was always the man chosen for that job.
Cañizares, Cedrún, Liaño or Molina were non-titular and much better than him.
vitizas 2 years ago

Pity our main striker did his knee and couldn't play in USA'94.
halfarsed 2 years ago
I remember too how we thought Ireland would win easily. So we knew we had to get at least a draw. But so many things just worked against us in the end. We missed a handful of sitters, Schmeichel was fouled when they scored, the corner they scored from was a mistake to begin with, it should have been a goal kick. In the end we had the same points and same goal difference as you, but had scored less. Had we beaten Latvia or Lithuania 5-0 at home instead of 4-0 we would have qualified. Just cruel.
llaauuddrruupp 2 years ago
...without wanting to pour salt on the wound - I believe I'm correct in saying if todays rules applied back then our 'head-to-head' would have been used to separate us before goal difference ...I needn't tell you that means your 1-1 draw in Dublin would beat our 0-0 in Copenhagen and Denmark would've been on the plane to America.
halfarsed 2 years ago
That's exactly right. And Jose Bakero later admitting he fouled Schmeichel on purpose doesn't help dull the pain either...Or that all those elements put together meant that Denmark's greatest and most popular player of all time never got a chance to display his skills at a WC while at the peak of his abilities.
But oh well, at least we're on our way to South Africa now. If you win your play-offs perhaps we'll meet again :-)
llaauuddrruupp 2 years ago
i think Michael Laudrup was one of the greatest players to grace Mexico 1986, despite being a young player. His and Elkjaer's striking displays against Uruguay (South american champions) and involvement in easy the victory over the Germans (beat them 2-0) were legendary!!
wayzotoichi 2 years ago 2
The head-to-head rule doesn't apply (at least it didn't for the WC2010 qualification, where goal difference was more important than the head-to-head).
tienefuego 2 years ago

The problem is and was that Spain has so many good football players. One goalkeeper gets out and another woldclass goalkeeper steps in. With only 10 players they manage to win that match - well deserved - I cannot remember we have ever beaten Spain in a football match - its a nightmare he he.
Baburote 2 years ago
We actually beat them in the first game in Denmark (1-0) in the WC94 qualification. But yes, Spain generally brings bad memories to us Danes. 1984, 1986, 1988 and then this game.
