I read Angier's article. It's very interesting. Plants communicate with other plants and with non-plants. One thing she doesn't mention is that plants also form stable communities. Plants of the same parentage will help eachother out. Plants move and alter their behavior according to changes in their environment. She makes a good point that b/c plants can't move they have even more complex behaviors. There is no scientific reason to assume plants don't have awareness.
