ah this is so ignorant, first of all latino culture doesn't exist second of all.. many latinos are white and not all latinos dance the same rhythm music like salsa and cumbia are from the caribbean from african communities the other "latinos" who dance to these dances only do so because they've adopted the dance into their pop culture like americans and europeans have. oh and cuba the country salsa originated from has one of the largest european/white descended populations.

Since this was a project for my literature class, I based my use of the word on a definition found in the introduction of Iguana Dreams, our primary text for the course. It's a great book if you are at all interested in these topics.
@sangreafrolatino You also make a great point about how so many "ethnicities" are present, especially in the Carribean, and how these cultures have been influence by western pop culture. At the same time, we do not want to make sweeping generalizations about all "Latino culture"- these witnesses are simply personal experiences that we wanted to share. Thanks again for the feedback!

@luis30531 In this literature class, we shied away from using the term "hispanic" because for some people, it creates an unwanted connection to Spain. (Have you heard this connotation of the word before? I had not.) For this reason, we used "latino," but in reading your comment I understand how this term also creates a problem. I appreciate your feedback.
@hooleylabel thank you, but I do agree that Hispanics are Latino not all Latinos are Hispanic. and yes not everybody who speaks Spanish is Hispanic for example the indigenous people of Latin America take offense to being called "Hispanic" But White and Mestizo Latin American who do have Spanish ancestry have no problem with the word. point being Latino is a big subject that includes peoples form the Americas to Europe.
