such a legend ... fond memories. best songs !!! i remember sneaking onto the roof of my house with my best friend learning how to smoke a cigarette to this music ... took me awhile to learn how to inhale. haha .. good times. btw - kids ... dont smoke & dont start. seriously
Who can say Elton wasn't recognized?? He was the biggest superstar for much of the early 70's in the world and he still fills arenas!! Everyone knows Elton is one of the greatest of all times!! I don't think anyone has overlooked what he did!! Just a long period of what he did will never equal his first 5 years of stardom!!
One of the greatest musicians of all time. His hits have spanned over 5 decades which very few singers/songwriters/performers can ever say. The outfits from the 70's/early 80's were a strange period, but other than that, Elton is an incredible performer. Thanks for the music Reggie!
Every day I thank the powers that be for creating the internet so I can be re-introduced to different versions of the songs I love and would have only otherwise known on the albums. I saw Elton in the last 5 years and it was truly amazing, but he's lost a certain quality in his voice that is fully captured here.
@mrandrus61 yep, i believe this concert was sort of an unveiling of the honky chateau album, this is the only time i've ever heard a recording of elton singing rocket man live with the correct high falsetto notes on the verses. most of the discovered bootleg shows from '72 on have elton adopting an easier way of singing those notes
he had his falsetto at least into the early/mid 80s actually....example: "One More Arrow." He just made a conscious decision to not use it as much after the Thom Bell Sessions.
@rottnpeach why doesn't he use his falsetto now, and since then? it almost seems as if he can't do the falsetto anymore, he seems to avoid it. i haven't heard him do it in any piece since the mid 80's
@rottnpeach Check his article in the Wikipedia- he became addicted to cocaine and weed, and smoked so much that there were nodules he had to have removed to keep singing. After the surgery, his voice was lower by an octave or so, which he said he liked much better than this original higher voiced sound. I like him regardless!
@MegaRushFan1 Are you kidding? He's one of the most succesful songwriters of all time. How have his talents never been recognized? The dude has sold the most solo albums second only to Michael Jackson as far as I know.

40 years now since this was played. And this song still sounds incredibly well. One of the best ever written.

Back when musicians could play..

Great performance, but terrible camera work. Dee Murray and Davey Johnstone were more than chopped liver, and deserved a lot more recognition.

@FrankChabbers He had surgery on his throat around 1984, that's when his voiced changed, is not that he chose not to do it anymore.

This guy was a hit machine in the 70's. His talents have never be adequately recognized. A genius!
