Thank you for this tutorial..very helpful...I already have Tascam 144...iMac..and Yamaha 323..so, I was very pleased to see your equipment...Q; Why am I having issues getting my computer to recognize my 144 ? Thank you so much..
@RegisPPalmer I am not sure why you have problems with recognition. I usually do not use iMac with Tascam all the time, only when I record from Mic. I hate external stuff as it takes USB ports etc. So when I record, I connect Tascam and Logic automatically suggest using US 144 as a sound card, I can also chose this manually in settings of the project. As far as I know you should also install the drivers for US 144, they are free on the Tascam site. BTW my studio has changed a lot
Hi, have a tascam 144 mkII, a Yamaha digital keyboard PSR-E423 and ACID Studio 8. My question is the keyboard doesn' have midi ouptut but it does have USB port otput and the Tascam doesn't have USB input port
so how can I set up this to get everything from the keyboard. I plugged the keyboard to the computer via USB, I get only inputs from the keyboard keys I don't get anything else. I connected the keyboard to the tascam via the headphones but still I wasn't getting anything else.
@tigre0540 U should understand one thing- MIDI is simply a code for sending message to PC. Your sound card does not support MIDI transfer as it is designed to be a SOUND CARD, not the bridge between MIDI instrument and PC, though that would be pretty handy. If your Keyboard does not have any sound inside itself, you can not use a sound card, do you see a link here? If you keyboard only a midi keyboard, use USB port, thats the only and the best way to connect it.
@Zoomslang there is no way to send sound directly to monitors with mixer. Unless you use the headphones cable or output (not XLR). Use mixer, dont shoot directly to monitors, my advise. YOu will have more control over the loudness of the speakers with the mixer than tweaking the knobs on the Tascam
thanks I'm really newbie on this stuff, on the other hand my primarily concern is to eliminate the static noise coz right now my rca cables is plugged into internal sound card on my custom pc and its annoying to hear the buzzy sound on my monitor without even raisin the volume....i own a laptop and plug this interface once i get it if its really gonna help....and other thing is why can't i use xlr since its balance is this other factor to lessen the buzzy sound?
@Zoomslang My Sound card does not have XLR output, so I presume yours has no too. I have two XLR inputs, one stereo out and one headphone out. I remember having buzz as well, not sure what condition it was in as I have tens of cables going through the wall here and there, The studio is much bigger than in the video above, more tools and equipment, it used to give some buzz but I illuminated it by separating the cables, I guess, not sure as it was long time ago. the sound card has to go to mixer
can i ask u something ?i wanna make home studio ...i got pc window 7 64 bit ..and i'm using fl studio 9..i trying to get audio interface... CAn Any brand of interface play with fl studio software....??
@soeminhtet1 Visit Thomann online shop, they have lots of audio interfaces. I suggest thinking of one that has 2 inputs. Like mine. You never know what for you are going to use it in teh future so be ready for everything :) And yes, I presume all audio interfaces will work with FL, it makes no difference what soft you use as Audio interface is a part of you PC, not your Software.
@superjini777 It says so as it has a switch for it (Phantom ON OFF) but I never used it as my mic has a different output that goes to its own phantom device.
@Thesixthellone When connected it works as an interface. However as far as I remember the Mac Finder still uses internal soundcard when you preview videos inside. I guess you can change it all in settings. I connect it only for recordings so I dont care. Normally I do not keep it connected as it takes one USB and I need them
@neo69hk HI never had issues with it, just perfect for home studio, I still use it even though I have several more sound cards in different devices, Tascam rules in quality. No I even use it for stereo recording by using both input channels. Great for all.
@Mthw7 Hi, I do not understand what you mean. I would expect no latencies in Tascam when recording live. I have never tried to send sound from computer back to computer. These gears are very powerful so I would not expect any troubles with it however you should probably ask someone who does more tricks with it. I have been using this Tascam with Guitar, Mic and Keyboard and it never gave me any trouble,
@a7xmetallica1991 Your electric drum kit must have a box that generates the sound. The box must have the AUX outputs, use them (as stereo) for Tascam sound card. There are 2 mono inputs in Tascam. So send your AUX to Inputs in Tascam and here you go.
@BatareikaStudio yea i have da roland td 9 modrule... ive been hearing dat its better to record it using midi cords... can u tell me any differences ?
@a7xmetallica1991 well its up to you. Midi makes your life easier if you want to change the sound of the drum later on PC/Mac. However if you are a good drummer I think you will be able to choose a right sound in your roland. In any case the sound card is not needed if you go straight with midi. midi goes in as USB.
@BatareikaStudio wait how does midi goes in as usb ? i thought like yu put the midi cord in the modrule then put the other end of the cord in too the tascam then yu plug the tascam into the computer via usb nd then record it from there..
@a7xmetallica1991 Hey I tried once, I though same way but as far as I remember it did not send MIDI through Tascam via USB, I will try tonight again, I will let you know. If it does- cool! I will save one of my USB ports from overloading my iMac. I will let you know tomorrow.
@a7xmetallica1991 Sorry I can not test it. There s a problem. I power my USB keyboard via USB only, I do not have adapter. So it means I can not avoid connecting USB in any case. So I do not know whether my MIDI comes from Keybard USB or Tascam USB. Ask someone else, they may help you if they do it this way.
@sinpalabras16 I think you need preamp so Use Phantom Power switch on Tascam for your mic. First prelisten by using the headphones output on Tascam (not PC). Try to use Phantom and then without it. Solve the problem at the stage of Audio interface and only then try to get sound on your PC. Let me know how it goes. Some other visitors may give you some good tips. All are welcome
u have one and its been giving me abit of problems when i use it i get alot of feedback even when im not inputing anything its a poping staticy sound it even makes it when i unplug all inputs i still get the sound any advice???
@dannyhance18 Hey relax, there should not be any problem. First install your CD and restart your computer. After that connect the device (in Apple iMac the sound card switches automatically) and play some music on computer. The sound should go through the US 144 (use headphones to pre-listen to it). If the sound doesn't go through it means you have to switch to US 144 sound card manually. Please google it as every Windows version has different way to do so. If you won't solve it contact me again
@Simbanyamfukudza01 Hey, I don't know, maybe someone will advise you one that. I found it easier to use Midi via USB. I have never tried to go through Tascam in order to skip USB connection.
hi i have a question i use the tascam us 144 and i run it into a program called Audacity and when i record i can only here my music on one side can you help me with that?
@MissDictionary14 Hi, I am not sure what is happening there in your studio. The mic may go one one side only as it can be mono towards one side. I would turn on MONO button for spreading it both sides. That happens to me when I create a new track in Logic and I make it stereo. There are two ways to fix the pre listening for me- 1.Turn on MONO on Tascam, 2.Make the track in Logic MONO. However the music should play on both sides either it is recorded in stereo or mono. Check the cables, settings
But just to help you out, or to add information, I would like to explain what the phantom switch is for, since you said you don't know what it is. The phantom switch is used to provide power to condensor mics. Most condensor vocal mics need phantom power. In this vid, you use a mic with a jack plug, which is ok, ofcourse. Then you don't need that switch, indeed!
This interface is a great device. I recorded my entire album with that thing, and with that thing only!
Thanks, I suspected it but never tried out as my condensor mic is already with a separate Phantom device, so all what I do is just connect XLR from that device into Tascam. Thanks for the tips!
If you mean 2 tracks from the same input= in your software selecr R (Record) on two tracks. And start recording. Otherwise record it on one track and then copy paste the recorded track on teh second track. If you mean that you want to record 2 instruments in one go- you can not separate them as the interface thinks it is 1 sound. For better quality I advise you to record separately all instruments.
Thanks for answering! ......what I mean is to record guitar and vocals at the same time and have them on 2 seperate tracks .... I thought that was an ability of the Tascam 144, recording 2 tracks at once ? ..... thanks
OK, now I understand what you mean. Yes, in this case you will be recording two inputs as one. I would never recommend you to record both at the same time anyway as the mic will pick up the sound of the guitar and you will never be as perfect unless you go to two different rooms but then you will not be able to hear guitar while singing yourself (unless your headphone cable is very long :).
So in one word, neither tascam nor any other external interface will do it for you as they are designed for pro use and none of pro would do that mess with the instruments. The problem lies in the USB, not in the Interface itself. The sound is very powerful thing and 1 USB can transfer it in a smart way only one by one. Please try to record your guitar first and only then record the voice over on the new track.
That's pretty it. The Tascam is very simple and needs no more explanations. It has all you ever need for the recording. Some mixers would have the external SoundCard so then you do not need a Tascam. However I try to avoid mixers as they often may influence the quality of your sound by adding highs lows and additional noises. Tascam is vey simple to use, has 2 XLR inputs, 2 jack inputs and PC connection. That's basically all you need for Audio Interface.
