This scene is exactly what I experienced at Myrtle Beach in the summer of 1962 at Lake Arrowhead Campground (now where the Hilton is.). I was in waistdeep water with a friend, and the swirling water (not yet a spout) passed within a few feet of us. When we got out of the water, the spout had formed and hit the beach, picking up lifeguard stands, and headed into the heavily wooded campground where it began to dissipate. The sand and debris(clothes!) above the treeline-frightening, unforgettable.

Waterspouts don't really need a powerful storm to form like a tornado does. Heck, I've seen airplanes fly straight through them for research. Something you can't do with a tornado. Although waterspouts can suck up marine life, they can do some damage when they reach land. They are more like an EF0, EF1 tornado. And water spouts take different forms, which may be why some waterspouts are more powerful than others. Though they aren't threatening like a tornado.

Looks like fun to me. I spotted; a funnel cloud in Galveston Tx. on 9-19-2010 near 80th and stewart... Was visiting Galveston 8-2009 and remember the tornado but I had moved to east beach to spot and the storm traveled from NE to SW then NW. so I missed seeing it but did get into some strong winds and severe cloud to ground lightning. That tornado was not typical of tornadoes in the midwest; but neither is any of the gulf coast weather..

waterspouts aren't dangerous since they're in the water, but they weren't worried because the tornado didn't pick up enough debris to hurt anyone, it was just sand.

I was at a school orientation five miles down the road when this happened. When everyone started freaking out, saying there was a tornado, I didn't believe them at all! Guess this is good enough proof! Thank goodness this was all it was!
