zacnjack, the MJO is a top pro band. This isn't a 15 year old's Neil Peart drum cover recorded in his bedroom. There are expected standards here. As someone who lived abroad and heard singers butcher English regularly, my remedy would be to have these guys just sing in their native language. The reason most of these singers don't do that is because they think they're already nailing it, and could go to the states and be stars too. It's disrespectful. If you can't sing it in English, then don't.
It's all about money. A Japanese production company dropped big bucks an entire big band from NYC to Tokyo. I'd say they can let whomever they want sing. Just tune out the singer if he bugs you and listen to some great playing.
I have some friends in Mexico City and their cover band play this song too ..their singer sounds like the original singer ( DC Thomas) I'll try to post that song soon.
Hideki is the best Japanese singer ever! English is not his first language but he managed well! Most people after mild stroke can't even talk, I think his performance is great!
I think lew sounded better on his Schilke he played in the 70's....that bach makes is sound so small...no doubt great player...I guess, just not my favorite sound
The singer is Hideki Saijo. He was a HUGE pop star in Japan in the 70s. I believe he's mostly an actor these days. I think his vocal chops aren't too bad; he probably doesn't come off very hip because of his less-than-perfect pronouciation. The band is quite amazing...!
Lew Soloff is one of the great trumpet players of all time. I believe on bass is fellow BS&T member James Fielder, a MONSTER bassist! Where the singer came from, I'll never know. He should be singing on a cruise ship to Hawaii, not playing with this WORLD CLASS band!
Dam...this singer reminds me Tony Clifton! Does anyone knows what horn Lew is playing on this clip? is it an "olds" cornet, buescher, F. Besson, or...??? Lew Soloff is on top! Amazing!!!
I am not crazy about the singers that are with this group but the other musicians are really smokin'. Smokin' trumpets, trombones, love this kind of stuff.
Of course it's not karaoke night. This wasn't meant to be seen in North America. Obviously English isn't his first language --- why don't you try singing one of the Japanese big pop tunes and see how good you sound. Gotta give the guy some props for singing with a band of this calibre.
Speakin' of spinning wheels, that singer would sound good under the back wheels of my truck while I do a brake burn.. what is this, Kareoke night with the MJO?
Lew Soloff what a trumpet solo and I like the bass too

His voice is nice, but the accent.
You can be sure in his native language his must be excellent.
And to any of you who are very negative.
Can YOU speak an entire language, every single word, pronounce so that you can at least make it out?
If not, I really wouldn't be talking.

AHHHH!! i can't take this anymore!!! the band is so good but all the singers are so horrible!!!

Tatsächlich, Lew Soloff spielt ja wie Don Ellis
eine Trompete mit vier Ventilen,
um Vierteltöne spielen zu können.
Wo hat dieser Mann nicht schon
alles mitgesielt ...
Ich verneige mich erfürchtig
vor Lew, der anscheinend
nie älter wird und nachläßt ...

Anytime you need subtitles for a singer, its probably a bad Idea, but these musicians are killer.
ComeToLias 3 years ago
Lol yeah i don't think subtitles for a singer are a good thing :P But other than that the band rocks

Anyone nitice Lew Soloff's fourth valve?
dunscap 4 years ago 3
I was wondering about that too! A take on Don Ellis' quarter-tone trumpet? Or a compensating valve like a 4 valve flugelhorn? VERY curious!

This is Lew,s four valve trumpet, not his Bach M bore!! He always sounds like Lew Soloff to me.
By the way:

What are you talking about, he is a great singer! You have no idea how he suffered a stroke that paralyzed his vocal cord for sometime.
