  • we got the same last name D:

  • There needs to be a "Love" button for this song.

  • Every time I hear this song, I become more and more scared of the future...

  • 4 people slipped and hit "the button"

  • yeah i agree with him being a good guy. he is happy to talk to anyone and even hang out with anyone after concerts. also, i dont get the damien rice comparison. i saw that people and itunes etc suggested him to me when i watched/listened to josh ritter, so i was excited to hear someone like him. i dont think he is anything like josh ritter. where is the similarity? you cant just lump non mainstream acoustic together.

  • Check my vid I posted today

  • Josh Ritter makes everything better <3

  • I wish I had this version of the song in my itunes. It's so much better than the album version.

  • HOLY SHIT! this a brilliant fucking song. this is a great song. i could reference bob dylan's waliking==========shit this is just a brilliant song.

  • What a song! Just had a chill, although it's about 30 degrees Celsius in here.

  • great job ,although musicwise ,it does remind me of a certain lincoln duncan

  • I always thought it's called 'Temptation of Adam' because of the story of Adam and Eve. He has a chance to destroy everything except for himself and the woman he loves, so he can be alone with her, like Adam and Eve. I'm not religious, I just thought that was what he was referencing.

  • Marie, as in Marie Curie? Seems like it to me.

    Beautiful beautiful song.

  • @ethanb0nd I think that he's simply referencing her name for the tone. Not actually stating it as her.

  • i think he used adam in the title of the song because it sounds like atom like atomb bomb

  • One of very few great artists today. Love this Guy. Also, i love ryan adams, avett brothers, the national!

  • this song is so so so so good, and he is so so so so talented. I was so happy to get to see him this summer. on my ipod where it shows how much you listen to a songs all of his are over the hundred mark, like every song, I've listened too.. hundreds of times

  • its great

  • I'm crying, but I don't know if I'm happy or sad.

    Genius.

  • this is an absolutely beautiful song, probably the single best ballad I have ever heard

  • *impressed nod of approval*

my discovery of Josh Ritter occured today...

  • In that case, listen to Wings. After hearing the incredible lyrics to that song I was hooked. Happy listening!

  • Pretty darn good I must say.

  • Can't stop listening to this!! One of his best songs!! And i agree, better than Dylan :) Just amazing!

  • I think Ritter's better than Dylan. Influence aside, Ritter's lyrics are better, his voice is better, and he actually seems like he enjoys being alive and isn't conceited and grouchy.

    P.S. 1:03 and 3:27 = best

  • ritter are do good but dylan are the man of s XX , you cannot say that, i think cannot compare that. This song and others are so fines but the time future will say.

  • absolut Dylan style... this guy is a fucking genius!!

  • is he in standard tuning? i dont think so. im trying to figure this song out.

  • Its in Standard tuning but hes tuned the whole guitar down so that the E Strings are now C#. Then the chords are C, G, B7, E minor, G, D, D/B and then C. Well thats how I do it anyway.

  • I didn't like josh ritter at first but then his music started to grow on me and now i find myself just sittin here listening at home outside of school even though i dont have to lol

  • you had to listen to him at school?

  • Yeah his music are his poems, and our english teacher is having us do peom analysis on either his songs "Girl in the war" or "Thin blue flame"

  • what do you live in his hometown or something?

  • You lucky duck.

  • You must have a bad ass teacher.

  • Whats this song about?

  • Two soldiers who work in a nuclear missile silo falling in love with one another.

  • WWIII. learning to love the bomb

and if I can't have her, then no one can

  • In a nut shell :P

  • have you heard any of his other songs? this is one of his poorer songs granted, but its not that bad

  • You really think so? This is one of my favorites of his...

  • Hey do you mean cheap as in easily affordable by anyone unlike the expensive ones only talentless critics can afford?

  • You're my hero Yamahman.

  • Comment removed

  • More pretentious that Damien Rice? I doubt it. I have met this man and he is genuinely a gent.

Listen to thin blue flame and you will realise how wrong you are.

  • @MichaelODonoghue I dont know who i would be able to compare him to maybe neil young on his style and bob dylan on his writing ability but he is just as unique as both of those great musicians :) dont try and compare it just enjoy it :)

  • i am in love with this man...

    he is genius

    funny

    brilliant

i know genius and brilliant are like the same...but he is my all time favorite artist...i can listen to him non stop

i wlll die happy if i can see him preform live

  • Genius and brilliant aren't the same!!!

Also, I am seeing him on July 4th this year!!! can't wait!!!!!

  • Hahaha I guess you are right.

that is awesome. I heard he is great live I have a friend who has seen him preform twice live. He great and his talks between sets are great as well. Hope you have an awesome time

  • JOSH RITTER HAS MY VOTE!!!!

  • "You said fusion was the broken heart that's lonely's only thought" is lyrical genious. lonely has a thought?

  • damn good...im a huge dylan fan...this music reminds of the feeling i had when dylan became a new musical obsession to me,about 15 years ago, when i discovered my fathers vinyl collection...this is very good stuff.

  • i paid 50 bucks just to see him open. only played i think 5 songs.

    worth it

  • I've gotten into Josh after hearing the song Kathleen from Hello Starling. Since then I've followed all of his releases and THCOJR is for me the most thrilling and excitng of all of them. I adore it. This particular song is definatly one of my favorites of his. When i first heard it I was overwhelmed with emotion and still am. I allways get goosebumps when i listen to it. The melody, the voice, the lyrics are just perfect. Oh, yeah, and I got really jealous of his talent too... lol

  • Again, pseudo-anti-war propaganda, but propaganda seems too strong a word. It's the type of lyrical genius that makes your stomach want to fall out and your heart weep. He's amazing.

  • i'm in love wwiiith this man's music

  • hmm....did yopu wo the "wwiii" on purpose?

  • ive listened to this song 115 times (: i love it so much

  • chills every time I hear this song... it is so well written and I can listen to it over and over.

Most people can only dream of having this calibre of songwriting ability.

  • josh. doug. i love you both.

  • I have shared Josh's music with so many friends, and the reaction is consistent: "How have I not heard this amazing talent before!?" The world would be a better place if more people listened to Josh's music. Don't you agree? Cheers, Josh & Doug...and thanks for all that both of you do. From Doug the Santa Barbarian.

  • He remembers the key to great lyrics, that is honesty. Too many songwriters these days try to write beautiful lyrics but gloss of all the flaws and completely miss the point of personal songwriting

  • Ritter is so amazing with lyrics. So pure. So Honest. So creative.

  • my friend had girl in the war on his myspace page and i had to look this guy up. there is something about him that just makes me smile. i love everything about this guy!

    :)

  • ahh he's an angell

  • Fantastic.... never heard the name before and, bizarrely - and demonstrating the useful power of the internet - I came across it whilst researching performances of the Bach chaconne [listening to Hilary Hahn on violin] as I continue trying to unravel it's mysteries and transcribe it for 10-string guitar. Wonderfully imaginative lyrics and a haunting delivery.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!

  • the lyrics in this song are amazing and as always beautifully song! wat an artist, poet watever u wanna call him! 5/5 easy!

  • Petite David Anyone?

  • hell yeah

  • He did it better.

  • he did and has a better voice

  • Gawd bless im.

  • Petit David yah! ELC for life!

  • great lyrics, nice singing, finger-picking guitar...

  • josh ritter is an amazing musician and poet, one of the best of our time.

  • been compared to dylan and springsteen,

a waste of words in my opinion,

well, compared to the way he uses them.

  • I'm just hearing his stuff for the first time and it's great. Anyone think he's a little dylanesque? Similar voice I think. I'm also wondering what goes through peoples heads when they call his music out. I read a comment below calling it gay. Does this poor asshole sit around all day thinking I can't wait to bad mouth youtube videos to make myself feel better? Anyone else laugh at their posts?

  • I worked with him on a gig when he played here on Nantucket. Wicked cool guy. After the gig he came up to me and gave me a hug and said he looked forward to working with me again.

  • There aren't enough words in the dictionary to describe him. He is a great poet, a beautiful soul and a kind human being. After seeing him, I recognized him on the street in LA, and he came and joined my friend and I for a drink before his flight. He's just that kind of guy...and I love him for everything :)

  • Saw him for the first time last week in Asheville, NC. I've never seen a singer and band put as much emotion into an performance. Even got to spend some time with him after the show briefly. Absolutely incredible singer, writer, and person...his potential is limitless.

  • Definitely my favourite of his.

  • This song gives me chills! Josh Ritter is amazing :)

  • He never ceases to amaze me.

  • This is one of the best unrequited love songs I have ever heard. It totally captures that feeling of not being good enough or not the right one or what have you. Such an amazing song and some of the finest song writing I have ever heard. This is just as beautiful on a sheet of paper.

  • Josh is gonna be a legend... From Riaan is South Africa.

  • so amazing

  • Anyone need a ticket to see him in Brooklyn on the 28th? I need to sell my ticket :(

  • I love this man.

  • Hehe. Me too

  • these lyrics...so great. rock on, josh!

  • Seeing him tomorrow night!

This songs awesome :), I love it.

  • would say, I like those sad songs by hin...not the happy ONES...cheers

  • I love those songs from josh...I don`t like those new happy once...but I´m glad he is :-)

  • ^_^

I love this song. Saw him preform it live in 2007 at a EMI fringe.

  • I just LOVE this version. Is this the same one that was up on Amazon? I think so, but I haven't seen in for a while...

  • so beautiful.

  • Josh!!! You are the greatest, but you seriously need to come back to Chicago.
