Hey loved this video! I agree 100% Do it right. Also, while you showed all the parts with a film of "stuff," I thought to myself, wouldn't a film of "stuff" slow the heat transfer? Just something to think about. And while I'm on the subject of dirty cooling systems. Any advice on how to clean a cooling system? Thank for all you do!
my civic 96 had a headgasket failure people was saying me ''use some stop leak its work'' i replaced the Headgasket now problem solved for a long long time totally approuved with you stop leak does not WORK!
Well Im not an expert on GM cars but I thought at one point they not only authorized but recommended the use of Stop Leak in one of their engines, may be the disasterous 4100 ?? I used it to succesfully POSTPONE (not fix, just put off) an external coolant leak on an all aluminum V8 head gasket for the season.
I tried some Bar's Leak in a leaking heater core. Yes it worked, but after that i never had the heat i had in the winter, was lukewarm at best... It's good to stop the leak but it also plugs up the heater core...
I wouldn't use stopleak to fix a head gasket, but I've seen it work twice for other issues. My dad had a leaking heater core on his Thunderbird 3-5 years ago, and tried stopleak on it. He told me recently that to this day it remains sealed, he's still never had to replace the heater core in all this time.
Years ago he used it on a LeBaron and it held about 1-2 months. He's a ChemEng and has more trust in those things than I do.
I've only tried it once myself, and it failed as it usually does.
Blue devil doesnt turn into a sunstance, that copper crap is the cheap 5-10 stuff.. Blue devil is about 50-65 bucks, and it works almost instantly.... Drain antifreeze, put in water with enough room to add entire contents of bottle depending how bad the leak... Engine must be cool, crank engine, turn heater on hot full blast, let idle for 50 minutes monitoring gauges... Stuff is magic in a bottle!!! I know from experience...
A few stop-leak tablets in my 170k-mile turbo diesel truck were not only prescribed but actually helped solve a problem of burning through coolant (slowly but still much quicker than it should). I don't know if it applies the same way to naturally aspirated gasoline engines.

@mi16t Well you are wrong there, Not all headgaskets are $50 and there not free to replace. If you have half a brain you would send the head to a machine shop and have it checked to see if it is warped or cracked and that definately cost.
You really have to overheat a motor to warp a head. That being said, a used good head is cheaper then machining, eitherway you are in under $500 if you do it yourself.
I worked on a MR2 one time where someone poured what looked like baking soda down the radiator. Man you talk about a huge mess. It took forever to flush out the cooling system. I have used a half a can of the Restore Stop Leak to help with a leaking heater core until I could get it changed out. It did stop the leak until I could change it out. I also flushed everything out before adding coolant. I do not recommend it to others though. Great video.
The cause of the overheating problem happened way before anyone noticed the "overheating" problem. Once the driver assumes that coolant lasts forever...
Internal corrosion will do its job as the metal parts become more yummy to the breaking down coolant.
I have used stop leak a couple of times to try to fix my heater core cuz I didnt feel like digging through the dash (followed directions). I would change a head gasket, but the heater core is a RFPITA. At my wits end, I was talking to the guy at the parts desk at the GM dealership. He suggested crushed walnut shells. Turns out GM sells this stuff as "coolant system conditioner" for $5. It didnt fix the problem completely, but it worked better than the stop leak. Went from a leak to a whiff.
The flaky stuff on the head gasket is a spray on copper "seating" material, not stop leak. Some people swear by it, I like it about as much as I like stop leak. YOU SHOULDN'T NEED GOOP TO FIX YOUR CAR!
The theory is that it helps adhere the gasket to the head and block and also serves to fill in minute gaps the head gasket isn't pliable enough to fill.
I agree, just fix the problem. That cowboy scotty got paid to advertise a product that doesn't work. One Vauxhall/GM dealership was selling a UK version of that additive and suggesting a new head gasket when a batch of faulty expansion bottle caps were used in the factory.
Water vanished from the collant tank, and they made a lot of money on warranty work!.
my mom was driving my old ford and though the rad had a pinhole leak. turns out the inner seal in the water pump was shot and it had coolant coming out of the weep hole. the stop leak ate the bearings to a nub in the pump. by the time i got to school (30 mile drive) it was a water fall of coolant from the pump. i pulled up to my buddys truck and said major surgery and we took the day off fixing it... turns out you have to take all the acessories off of a 6.9L diesel to get the water pump off...
eric i used permatex sealant on my intake gasket! did i screw up?? i use sealant on the head and the intake gasket too! and i dont know if i put down and re do the whole thing again
@neoholland Yeah your supposed to either use some copper spray sealer or nothing at all on the head gasket with clean flat surfaces. The Fel-pro brand I used on a ford 3.8L stated on the packaging not to use any kind of sealer to seal it with. Check the packaging on what you got to look for it. But permatex is a silicon seal which will surely leak on head gaskets. Now for intake gaskets with very light sealer will normally not hurt it at all. What engine did you do this to?
@jimmy101112000 i did it to a chevy 350 engine!! on my 68 camaro, is an old engine and i change the spread bore manifold to an weiand square bore manifold, the gasket package didnt say anything at all... i use permatex in the entire gasket front and back, a friend told me that is better that way, but u know, theres so many opinion in this kind of topics, well is now a matter of TEST IT right??? and thanks for the advice jimmy! i hope doesnt leak at all T__T
@neoholland I looked this up and as long as you used the permatex copper spray you should be fine. Just as long it was not that silicone grey looking stuff for water pumps and thermostat housings you should be fine.
The 350 engine is one of the best engines that chevy made. Maybe you should rebuild it to a 383 stroker when the engine is completely worn out :D.
i had a leaking waterpump that was leaking gd when running and would leak after sitting over night i bought a bar`s stop leak in and it got me by till i could fix it .....something u dont wont to drive to long that the timing belt runs the waterpump and that eng is a intfeance motor and usly a bad waterpump wouldnt be gd even the pump stop would have cost alot more money fixing it ......it did slow it down and i even drove it out of state like that ......i even put it back in
I used it once on a my holden which has a buick L27 v6 in it. it was leaking from the timing chain cover gasket and one of the cover bolts. Obviously I tried to tighten the bolt a little more which didn't stop the leak, To change this gasket would be huge job with the manifold gasket, harmonic balancer, all accessories, water pump, sump just to remove the chain cover. I put in stop leak and it worked lol. next 3 years and 2 coolant changes latter it was still leak free. It works for small leaks.
IT WORKED ON SEALING MY GASKET BETWEEN MY TIMING COVER AND BLOCK WHERE THE COOLANT PASSAGES GO TO THE WATER PUMP ON MY 96 WINDSTAR IT TAKES 5+ HOURS RO REPLACE THAT GASKET AND U HAVE TO DROP THE LOWER ENGINE CRADEL ON THE PASSENGER SODE 6 INCHES TO ALLOW THE ENGINE TO DROP TO CLEAR THE WHEEL WELLAND NO REGULARD STOP LEAK WORKS I ONLY USE BARS LEAK BRAND IT IS THE ONLY BRAND THAT ACTUALLY IS SAFE TO USE IN A COOLANT SYSTEM
Chemically stop leak is very similar to exhaust repair putty/paste (Gun Gum). Both contain sodium silicate aka liquid glass. This turns solid when it meets air + high temperatures. The flaw is it needs high temperatures to be effective, it can't work miracles (large leaks or warped heads) and it only works in leaks involving coolant or gasses (coolant to cylinder, cylinder to air). With a leak involving the mixing of oil and coolant it has the potential to wreck the engine
@alanmcg2006 Indeed that is one type of stop leak. There is another that is made out of cellulose that works on lower temperatures and does really gum things up.
Sodium silicate does need over 100ºC to convert to solid. I did had a little leak on my car and put some sodium silicate (industrial concentrated solution from a 55 gallon drum) in the circuit and it sealed it.
@darmikela buy new seals and install properly. I rebuilt a old civic cx that the previous owner had the bright idea to use RTV as a fix all... it made things worse... I honestly don't know if he did it wrong or what but, I personally would rather spend a bit more and fix it right the first time then fix it over and over or make it worse.
@darmikela I'm not a pro in a family and friend mechanic for the most part i have never had a problem with just replacing seals. I put a little oil on my finger run it along edges I feel need it, don't use a lot just a very thin film. Then place seals and torque accordingly. crv running well several years later. RTV has a tendency to goop up. and the civic i helped rebuild had RTV that was flaked off in the engine and valve cover. i dont like it.
Ive tried it several times and usually it just plugs stuff up. Once, I had it half work when I had a small break in a head gasket, still fixed 4 years later. But, after fixing the head gasket, it plugged the heater core that was only 30% plugged before. So, in using it, you take the little risk of plugging something else or it doing nothing to fix the problem.
try i think twice, fucking never work, garbage.JB weld on another side work well for me,i cut accidently rear axle near hub,so that will by definetly leak gear oil from differencial, anyway i rebuild those deep cuts from grinder with JB weld.and on top put selant too, never leak again.i think its ok stuff.also not every toyota is build in USA,my is made in Japan, another like corrola is made in canada.usa made in just camry, tacoma, tundra and sienna i think,so almost all of them...LOL
eric !! you work on cars .. would you tell the dumbasses who keep buying forgein cars to stop and start buying us made cars.. most of your videos have japanease cars
@yazied00100 don't have to work on toyotas, hondas, nissans as much as chevy, ford, dodge. i could care less about big companies. they have enough money already. they aren't helping us out. 2 of them took a bailout. where do you think that bailout money comes from? .....us.
Stop Leak works great for radiator leaks. I once fixed an intake leak using an old school "liquid glass" remedy. I use to do a lot of racing and wasn't afraid to try anything to get the car on the track. Good video man!
Thank you for your humor, thank you for your professional approach, your humility. I agree, these kind of products are not working, as the ones used to restore compressions.... they are just wasted money...
PS. Replace exhaust valves resurface head head gasket set and everything else that was never Fucking maintained. Runs about 1500 bucks to do it right....
@BadBrad23 1500 for that?where the fuck do u take your car to fix bmw dealership lol thats way way to much .if you pay that your getting boned up your ear man.
I have the same thoughts about these quick fix products there for cheap people you might save a couple of hundred dollars this week but you will probably be buying a replacement motor next week if you get the work done properly you will save money in the long term it just makes sense.
chevy 350 with rear frost plug leak-did not want to pull trans-added bars leak- has not leak in four years-also to note some auto makers put this in from factory
ok i will say this stop leak has worked for me i didnt have much of an option i had a pinhole leak in the radiator and was not employed at the time but it is NOT permanent fix never will be because 2 months later the leak returned and with the new job i replace the radiator
@miketonon Are fully retarded or just partially retarded? Why would i put more stop leak in my engine? Its made to clog holes. Do you know how a cooling system works? Th hles cannot be clogged or your engine will just overheat again.
@xXxchipperchopperxXx you know what you said is moronic where talking about FINE PARTICLES long as it keeps circulating it cannot clog anything but any who.. i would use it for something a small leak in a radiator... in some causes some people would use pepper back in the day to fix a small radiator leak or put 2 eggs in the radiator. other then that. stop leak works in (Some cause) in many words LEAVE THAT GUY ALONE shut up or listen to eric..
@miketonon do you even know how i put the stop leak in or what brand i used the brand pretty much said pour it in and then warm the car up its not like it hard stop lak dos work but not s a permanent fix it even said it on the bottle
@miketonon Doubt it. An oil pressure gauge on a 1996 Ford Mustang will read exactly in the middle of the gauge face between 25-75psi. You never see oil pressure increase with engine rpm, even though the engine is building more oil pressure. This makes it extremely inaccurate. So before you start insulting and trolling on an auto mechanic, I suggest you read up on your shit... idiot.
@miketonon You must not be smart enough to understand the concept I'm trying to get across to you. Or it could be worse... You could be a full grown man trolling on here like a 12 year old because you got nothing better to do, since you don't have a job, or a girl, and you still live with your mother. Nice job, man. You're the shit stain of society.
@Silvestris420, look, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, but you seem like a little weak ling that needs to be toughened up. I can't believe my little words on here intimidated you so much! What a little bitch you are! Its hilarious!
@miketonon No, no, no. What's hilarious is antagonizing you and getting a feeble little response out of someone so irate and immature. And who claimed I was intimidated? If this is your pathetic attempt at failed assumptions, you've claimed first prize. Now here's the kicker... You're retarded (OMG!). Yes, yes, this is a surprise to everyone. Who could of guessed? A troll on Youtube? But we can fix this... ehh, later. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to take a massive SHIIITTTTTT!!!
@Silvestris420, I'm sorry for your short-coming, but we're here for you man! Don't be afraid to talk to all of us on here concerning your issues, you sure have alot of them.
Now, how does that make you feel. Let it out, let it all out...
@miketonon The last line of your comment just reminded me of the shit I just took. And it made me feed damn fuckin GOOOD!!! I WILL FUCK YOU IN THE STREET! I WANT A GOD DAMN COOKIE! I WILL FUCK YOU IN THE STREET WITH A COOKIE!!! FFFFFAAAAAUUUUCCCCKKK!!!
@miketonon Yes, yes there is. Kiss the fattest part of my pasty white pimply dimply ass. Smoke some more crack and run with scissors lodged in your nipples. Get arrested and tell big black Bubba a racist joke. Just do something that makes me laugh some more.
I also used stop-leak to fix a pinhole in my radiator. Normally, I don't mess with the stuff, but I just didn't have the money to get a new one at the time. It did the job well enough.
You are right in that its best to do it right the first time. But if you want to push the envelope and get a few more months or years out of the leaking system, then a stop-leak product does work. I had a couple pin-hole leaks in my lower 69 Chevy C10 radiator that would spew pretty good, and used StopLeak....solved the problem, and that was 3 years ago, and it has delayed the $250 cost of a new radiator. A little putty, a little paint, will make it what it aint. Ha ha
@miketonon the hell im not dumbass what a stupid question to ask if im making a statement about people not being smart enough to buy a new gasket over using stopleak than dont ask me am i one of them! does it not register to u that i wouldnt ever use that shit?! by the way my comment was stated? obviously not it seems like
Amen brotha...But in their defense....You are supposed to remove the thermostat and remove the plug for the cylinder that the leak is in...I realize this cannot be done always...But I wonder about it sometimes....I'm changing a head gasket on a 96 mustang 3.8 and I truly wish I could have just put some stop leak stuff in it and left...but I guess I'm just not the "real live success story" kinda guy... haha...Seriosuly though guys, If you need a new gasket..put a new forkin gasket on it...
my truck had two freeze plug and the radiator was leaking like a stuck pig, 2 gallons a day, two bottles of Bars stop leak, 50 miles of driving and 6 weeks later, no leaks at all..should give me time to get to warmer weather to take the engine out to replace freeze plugs..
@rotaryenginepete, does it take an egg and a side of bacon? Don't forget the oj (not simpson)!... aaaaa, I sueway... guoy I, I swear, I fix it with breakfest, weary good!
I have an 88 chevy G20 350 V8, the water pump was starting to go bad I learned that if I put a cap full of brake fluid (no more) in it it would help swell up the water pump gaskets and buy me some time while i save up the cash to replace the pump. I did it and it sealed up fairly well and lasted little less than a month. Once i got the pump replaced I flushed the system, new Tstat new hoses the works since it's hard enough to work in such a tight space.
The only time I have ever used stop leak was for a leaky heater core. Oddly enough.
I must have gotten real lucky, because it worked as intended. The leak stopped, the heater core was not plugged as I still had great heat from it for nearly 2 years after the treatment. However it is just a band-aid for the problem at best. We just replaced the heater core after it finally started leaking again two years later. Also replaced the entire coolant system along with it.
shame on you :) i like that. the only success ive had with any kind of stop leak is lucas oil power steering stop leak and that only solved a minor leak. i havent had any luck with engine sealers, coolant fixes, ac fixes, trannys nothing else.
the powder stop leak just clogs up the radiator and the water passages in the engine on thing i have had very good luck with is blue devil its 60 bucks a quart but it works really good i seen leaks in rusted out freeze plugs get sealed up with that stuff and its liquid so it does'nt clog everything up
"A friend of mine" used stopleak for a hole in the rad. It worked, but not on a long term, and when I took the engine apart I had a "what have I done" moment.
A friend tried it and it did not work on hisoverheating VW, we got stuck next to the road and a farmer cam eto our rescue, with curry powder...my friend sold the car 9 months later, still no sign of overheating...go figure?
That is copper spray gaket on the replacement head gasket commonly used to instal a head gaskets by mechanics to insure good seal and placement. now using stop leak and done right an flushed after using there will be no residue.
proper instalation is to fill stop leak into radiator then run for 15 minutes. Stop running engine and let cool completely and repeat that process 5 times. once done and cooled completely drain all coolant and flush cooling system and refill properly with factory recomended coolant and mixture.
My brother has a 1995 mitsubishi galant and it was burning coolant. At the time the car had 240,000 miles and wasent worth paying a shop to fix and I wasent confident at the time in changing the gasket myself so I put some bars leaks liquid copper in it (copper dust and a liquid binder) Stopped the burning with no apparent ill effects for over a year and a half. Later on I had to change the timing belt so I did the gasket at the same time and could see where the copper sealed it. Was pretty cool
Good video - and I agree with you. I'm not a professional mechanic, but I do know a bit about engines.
I don't like these stop leak products myself, I'm in the crowd that worries about it gumming things up - like the radiator or heater core tubes.
I've heard they have products like this for A/C as well, which REALLY sounds like a bad idea - I could just see that blocking up a parallel flow condenser.
'I have seen this happen over a dozen times. I was always told if can plug up a leak it can plug up a pipe. had an eclipse before that someone put this in it and I spent some money replacing parts lol.
stop slip doesnt work either. i kid you not i put it in my truck went around the block and didnt make it back home. the stop slip made it worse. so that was a waste of 10 bucks.
hey eric the car guy I have a oil leak on oil drain plug and it just kinda of a one drip thing but still. I was wondering what I can use in the mean time to seal it until I get another drian plug any solutions ? (FR) Also if it matters its a 91 olds bravada thanks
0:53 should be: "like all mechanics I strongly advise against gumming your coolant passages with stop leak" he was just playing it safe, but I said it for you man.
Its this stuff called steel seal. works like magic, and its been over a year now still holding together. Bout $70 for this stuff online at steel seal.com
I have tried for years to stop using this stuff. he considers it a permanent fix but he is also one of those guys that removes the thermostat first thing because he says they are useless.. go figure
I have seen one stop leak work,K seal and this brand does work.Had a few Cadillacs with the Northstar come in with blown head gaskets which is common problem. The cars were going to the auction anyway and the dealer did not want to spend the money replacing the headgaskets.
I has worked for very small leakes for me but if at the time I have a choice I WILL NOT USE IT.... I have seen to many radiators, water passages, and water pumps clogged up with that stuff, ( probably from a person that has no clue what they are doing and put 5 bottles in the radiator). In any case after using it for an emergency repair untill I could fix the problem I ALWAYS flush the system.
I have a question. My car is a 2000 Mazda 626 v-6 Engine built on April 20th. I have a small pin prick of a hole on the radiator where the upper radiator hose connects to. I have just changed the hose thinking "Okay this is the problem since I'm losing coolant...again" so after I changed it, I turned it on with coolant in it. And found the problem. My mom wants me to put a full can of pepper in it. I heard pepper does not solve the problem, it will mess up the water pump. Is it alright to use it
Also I thought the main reason I was losing coolant was because of my thermostat so I changed that and found out it was my resivour, but I at least got that difficult piece out of the way incase it would go in the future.
that is not stop leak on that head gasket. that is copper spray that helps seal the head gasket win u first put it on

my mom was driving my old ford and though the rad had a pinhole leak. turns out the inner seal in the water pump was shot and it had coolant coming out of the weep hole. the stop leak ate the bearings to a nub in the pump. by the time i got to school (30 mile drive) it was a water fall of coolant from the pump. i pulled up to my buddys truck and said major surgery and we took the day off fixing it... turns out you have to take all the acessories off of a 6.9L diesel to get the water pump off...

eric i used permatex sealant on my intake gasket! did i screw up?? i use sealant on the head and the intake gasket too! and i dont know if i put down and re do the whole thing again
neoholland 2 weeks ago
@neoholland Yeah your supposed to either use some copper spray sealer or nothing at all on the head gasket with clean flat surfaces. The Fel-pro brand I used on a ford 3.8L stated on the packaging not to use any kind of sealer to seal it with. Check the packaging on what you got to look for it. But permatex is a silicon seal which will surely leak on head gaskets. Now for intake gaskets with very light sealer will normally not hurt it at all. What engine did you do this to?
jimmy101112000 1 week ago
@jimmy101112000 i did it to a chevy 350 engine!! on my 68 camaro, is an old engine and i change the spread bore manifold to an weiand square bore manifold, the gasket package didnt say anything at all... i use permatex in the entire gasket front and back, a friend told me that is better that way, but u know, theres so many opinion in this kind of topics, well is now a matter of TEST IT right??? and thanks for the advice jimmy! i hope doesnt leak at all T__T
neoholland 1 week ago
@neoholland I looked this up and as long as you used the permatex copper spray you should be fine. Just as long it was not that silicone grey looking stuff for water pumps and thermostat housings you should be fine.
The 350 engine is one of the best engines that chevy made. Maybe you should rebuild it to a 383 stroker when the engine is completely worn out :D.

Some of the reason the stops leaks don,t work can be based on how far gone the leak is.
TheScenekilla1 2 weeks ago
I used it once on a my holden which has a buick L27 v6 in it. it was leaking from the timing chain cover gasket and one of the cover bolts. Obviously I tried to tighten the bolt a little more which didn't stop the leak, To change this gasket would be huge job with the manifold gasket, harmonic balancer, all accessories, water pump, sump just to remove the chain cover. I put in stop leak and it worked lol. next 3 years and 2 coolant changes latter it was still leak free. It works for small leaks.

biggdaddy2001 2 weeks ago
Chemically stop leak is very similar to exhaust repair putty/paste (Gun Gum). Both contain sodium silicate aka liquid glass. This turns solid when it meets air + high temperatures. The flaw is it needs high temperatures to be effective, it can't work miracles (large leaks or warped heads) and it only works in leaks involving coolant or gasses (coolant to cylinder, cylinder to air). With a leak involving the mixing of oil and coolant it has the potential to wreck the engine
alanmcg2006 2 weeks ago
@alanmcg2006 Indeed that is one type of stop leak. There is another that is made out of cellulose that works on lower temperatures and does really gum things up.
Sodium silicate does need over 100ºC to convert to solid. I did had a little leak on my car and put some sodium silicate (industrial concentrated solution from a 55 gallon drum) in the circuit and it sealed it.
But it was a small leak.

No stop leak, or RTV should EVER be used!!!!!!
An0nym0usBeaver 2 weeks ago
@An0nym0usBeaver no RTV?? How do you seal your valve covers? Sperm?
darmikela 2 weeks ago
@darmikela buy new seals and install properly. I rebuilt a old civic cx that the previous owner had the bright idea to use RTV as a fix all... it made things worse... I honestly don't know if he did it wrong or what but, I personally would rather spend a bit more and fix it right the first time then fix it over and over or make it worse.
An0nym0usBeaver 1 week ago
@An0nym0usBeaver Your supposed to us RTV when replacing valve covers.
darmikela 1 week ago

Jerkwad152 1 month ago
You are right in that its best to do it right the first time. But if you want to push the envelope and get a few more months or years out of the leaking system, then a stop-leak product does work. I had a couple pin-hole leaks in my lower 69 Chevy C10 radiator that would spew pretty good, and used StopLeak....solved the problem, and that was 3 years ago, and it has delayed the $250 cost of a new radiator. A little putty, a little paint, will make it what it aint. Ha ha

Also replaced the entire coolant system along with it.

proper instalation is to fill stop leak into radiator then run for 15 minutes. Stop running engine and let cool completely and repeat that process 5 times. once done and cooled completely drain all coolant and flush cooling system and refill properly with factory recomended coolant and mixture.

Is it alright to use it
antisocialanarch 1 month ago
Also I thought the main reason I was losing coolant was because of my thermostat so I changed that and found out it was my resivour, but I at least got that difficult piece out of the way incase it would go in the future.
