4:40 This, of the many, is one of my favourite parts from Hitch. The responses are expectedly fatuous, and deserve no further mention. No serious, thinking person coul glaze over such a rebuttal to such a question. Well thought out and brilliantly delivered, I dearly miss this man.
I think I have just realised Hitchens' prime virtue: I know I wouldn't have the patience to sit there listening to that rubbish, knowing that everyone in the audience buys it.
It troubles me that the most popular comment is one that promotes skipping the opposition arguement. What is the point of a debate if you only listen to the man who supports your view-point?
Ok, I understand the concept of free speech, freedom of faith, etc., but I think it should be legalized that once some pastor like the bearded dude tells you what's he's saying at the end of the video, you're entitled to punch him in the face.
And he's not allowed to resist. Because Heaven "would make it right some day"!
For over 2000 years we have been promised that all would be put right, that all tears would be wiped away. OK! When? In another thousand years from now? Another million years? In another billion years? I know! In a few billions years, the sun will become a red giant star, vaporizing the four inner planets, including the earth, then there will be no more suffering. But in the meantime, we must strive for justice to make the world better, and not wait for a promise that will never come!
@9:17 The man to Hitch's right just explained why some people believe in a god. They can't stand the idea that "evil" will go "unpunished." However, I contend that this very belief often allows just that. Instead of demanding justice in the only existence we can know for certain we'll ever have, people are cajoled into accepting that, for some (usually the rich and powerful), "punishment" will be meted out after death.
Doug Wilson's assertion that you can't make an argument against Chrisianity as an Atheist unless there is a God of the universe is some what analogous to Zeno's paradox which -paraphrasing just look it up- says you can't walk across the room. You need only stand up and walk across the room to show that they are under a misapprehension.
Christopher often raises good points, however he really sets up a straw man with his description of God's tyranny. Although many Christians do believe in a tyrannical God. Ghandi said, "God is truth and truth is God." Many Christians have a better view that if we truly knew what was best for us, there would be no distinction between our will and God's will. I love the Eastern Orthodox view that the more righteous we become, the more we become deified as well.
i don't give a rat's pubic hair about god's will and what he considers right or wrong.
We have to live in this fucked up world and not him, so if he is the good guy, he won't be the slave driver that gives me the impression that he is the biggest piece of sh!t that exists.
But then again there is no god and what screws the world up is random, but even more religions who brainwash their kids to blame it all on god and the devil to avoid responsibility.
@petelovesrat That is assuming that God is not real and God is not good. A better interpretation of "thought crime" is to learn that our actions begin in our thoughts. Therefore we must learn to control them. This is a common view even among Buddhists, New Age Spirituality, and I suspect even atheists.
@phantom1539 god is not good if he convicts people of thinking about stuff that he disapproves of, Thinking and doing are two very different things.. I dont think I need to explain why. Furthermore, most people can control their actions and not act on thoughts. People that cant do that, we call psychopaths.
@petelovesrat I understand. Yes, but a consistent thought pattern changes our life. For better of for worse. For instance, if we think too much about the *one single verse* where Jesus condemns thought crime, as opposed to the thousands of other verses in the Bible.
@phantom1539 who the hell only thinks about one thing all the time. Also your comment suggests to me that you disagree with the fact that god can commit you of thought crime. I.e. you disagree with the ten commandments (though shall not covet...).
@petelovesrat Of course we don't think of "just one" thing all the time. But all of our actions come from thoughts. It really is that simple. :P
But, more importantly, is for you to know how much God loves you and wants to forgive you from *any * sin. Thought, action, or otherwise. It's much better to think about how much God wants to renew, and transform, everything about you. Yes, even your thoughts. ;)
@phantom1539 Im sorry but I dont want to be forgiven by god. If I have offendd anyone, the correct cours of action is to make amends to that person. Not to ask for forgivness from any god... And by the way, what do you think I need to be forgiven of.. looking at women lusfully? If we didn't, the human race wouldn't procreate.
I feel real pitty for the moderator. Not because of his illness but because of the way he sees it. How sad does your life have to be to see yourself as not-strong, not-intelligent and generally weak?
That's what religion does. It makes you weak. God is great, you are small and insignificant.
This is why I love the way Hitchens debates. He will give responses but he leaves it up to you, the audience, to research his claims and those of his opponents and find out if they are rational and/or logical.
the fact that the person will be rewarded and that justice will be made in heaven does not change the fact that the person went through hell... personally even if god existed... i would rather not go to heaven if i had to endure hell on earth b4 i reached there. no, a father beating a child and offering ice cream later still does not change the fact that he beat the child. and even that is hideous as pointed out by hitchens. Even if heaven existed, screw that no one deserves that.
Yep... It comes down to life sucks and then you die. So make the best of it.
And for those who can't... Such is life.
But, if deluding yourself to believe that you will get another go around or will be made well in heaven. So be it. We all have to find our happy place. Just do not feel that I have to come along And, if I do not, it's hades for me is just a matter of dragging me down with you.
Really Hitchens is arguing that if the Christian deity exists, then he is not worthy of worship, rather than that he does not exist. Which is a strong argument.
This shows why Dawkins is so much better than Hitchens. The former would've made some attempt to meet the cosmological and meta-ethical arguments, where as Hitchens, if he doesn't have an answer, just tries to fill the gap with flippancy, bluster and charisma.
@scepticthinktank In fairness, I think that Hitchens might think enough of most of the audience to think that everyone can realize why the Ontological Argument and many of the others are stupid, or is managing his time, and so he moves on. I think it probably is worth countering the arguments these guys put forward though.
Nothing wrong with humour, but not in lieu of answering the philosophical questions that were raised by the theists (which can be easily answered). You have to watch the whole debate to know what I mean.
@scepticthinktank Craig, who alone put forth I think 7 of those arguments, likes to debate by proposing a variety of erroneous or self-justifying theories and claims, watching his opponent try to dispel them all, shrugging and scoffing at the effort, and boasting about his victory. I suspect it's why in the more recent debates against him, like the one with Sam Harris, his opponents talk past him and to the audience directly. Letting WLC set the tone just doesn't pay off.
He doesn't really try. He is not a scientist and isnt going to go after the stupidity of the cosmological arguments put out by scientifically illiterate quacks like Strobel and Craig, and he could a shit less for the stupid thought games that the others play. His point is simple, if you believe this crap you need to take responsibility for the evil that it does, and recognize that an all powerful tyrant leading your life is not something anyone should ever want.
@theviolator23 I know he doesn't try. That's my point. He should at least come up with some quick sound bites to adress those kinds of arguments, because I've seen him outright dismiss them before and I doubt it comes across very well to the theists/fence-sitters in the audience, who are often looking for any reason to cling to their faith.
I agree, but understand that unlike the christians on the panel, he does not claim to be an expert on everything. He is a political scientist, a historian, and philosopher and therefore speaks to those subjects. It would be inappropriate (as it is for Craig and the rest) fir him to go up and talk about cosmology
Bullshit, if you were thrown in a dungeon for 24 years, nothing will satisfy your need for justice. Nothing will ever make you whole. If you cannot see that, then you have never been in a bad situation like that.
@theDuctapeUnion So what? Don't get me wrong- I love Christopher Hitchens, but if you don't take the time to listen the moderator's question (and a very good one at that), then you miss out on the context. I admit that not all the questions in these kinds of debates are good (and many are actually quite terrible), but the moderator's is a nice exception. Hitchens even thanks him for asking it.
Yes, justice will come for this poor girl. Unless, upon his deathbed, having seen the error of his ways, her father accepts Jesus Christ as his savior. In which case she will be spending the rest if eternity with him alongside her. This is some justice system isn't it?
Pastor Wilson is the only one brave enough...and smart/creative enough to respond to anything Hitchens has to say. Wilson would be a good debater on the atheist side if only he didn't believe in supernatural magic. Think about how many millions of smart people we would have all working to make this world better if we only moved god and religion into the imaginary realm where it belongs . It's happening, slowly. Hurry up and free your mind. Think!
@Airmanf7 Wilson is very articulate, yes. Have you seen that Collision DVD that came out a year or so ago? It's footage of Hitchens and Wilson doing an informal series of debates/book tour. They actually seem to get along very well.
@LeafMashes Congratulations for completely defining Hitchen's argument, with a quote from the bible no less. I don't know if this was irony or seriousness but bravo.
I'm not really sure I can believe what I've just listened too, god exists becuase we can have a debate, therefore we don't have to address the points raised by people who don't believe in god when they point out flaws in our theology. How on earth does he justify those massive leaps in logic? his whole opening statement was non sequitur followed by non sequitur, it felt like I was playing a game of spot the syntax.
I am a Atheist..... I am not the strongest, I am not the smartest, I am not the most connected, And I do fall down. I strive to learn, walk better and in general get better in life. But I dont need theology or a god to do this. If I want to accomplish these things I have to develope my skills ON MY OWN! No one can keep me from these things, not god, church or theology!
@jda978 I agree with you entirely. Its perfectly natural for people to have a moral compass simply because if at some point you do something bad you know you wouldn't want that happening to you so you don't that anymore, and learn as you progress through life. Nobody needs the invisible man in the sky.
@theDuctapeUnion So what? Don't get me wrong- I love Christopher Hitchens, but if you don't take the time to listen the moderator's question (and I think it's a very good one at that), then you miss out on the context.
@theDuctapeUnion Well, I couldn't agree with you more on that. Unfortunately, one of the negative by-products of teachers' attempts to encourage student participation in grade school is the proliferation of very bad and dumb questions by people who should know better and should have learned so a long time ago.
"Christianity has something to say for people who are not strong, for people who are not intelligent, for people who who fall down." Yep, Christianity is for the weak, the stupid and the desperately ill. I think that's the first argument an apologist has ever given that I will grant.
"Christianity has something to say for people who are not strong, for people who are not intelligent, for people who who fall down." Yep, Christianity is for the weak, the stupid and the desperately ill. I think that's the first argument an apologist has ever given that I will grant.
Hi, If your an atheist as am I, please check out my channel, where I'll be assessing major issues our society is facing in terms of religion and basic ethics... As well as the occasional video game content as I am a bit of a gamer..
The moderator's implication that attacking Christianity is attacking the weak is an underhanded attempt at emotionally manipulating the audience. These people, they act as if they posses a truth they feel they need to deceive others into believing.
The four Christian panel members must have been doing a mental facepalm as the moderator was giving his speech about religion being for the weak and unintelligent....
"Christianity has something to say for people who are not strong, not intelligent, for people who fall down."
The moderator admits defeat before Hitchens even opens his mouth. Even better, he seems totally unaware that he just validated all the major points of the opposition. Lol, Christians!
business trip... god needs money!!! or at least his representatives do... sorry about your cerebal palsey... pray for it to go away... that didn't work? i wonder why? why did your loving god invent such a disease in the first place?
How Hitch manages to stay straight-faced in the presence of these morons is a testament to his patience. We talk about how humans as a species have evolved to intelligence, four people at that table prove that intelligence has entirely eluded a few among us.
this moderator is not a good example for the christian faith...stupid...and i dont care that you have cerebral palsey. i dont feel sorry for you....maybe god does.
Hitchens is real, he always makes practical examples and references authors and specific historical facts. The other lunatics just hang on to tales and "abstract thinking" loops. HITCHENS WIN
But the whole point is that the wrong against Elizabeth Fritzl CAN'T be righted - it's happened, it was ALLOWED to happen. The stupidity of the claim is that it can be sorted out later - well in that case it can be sorted out BEFORE IT HAPPENED. It's special pleading nonsense of the highest order.
The moderator hit the nail on the head! He's basically conceding that religion is bullshit but necessary so that people can feel good about themselves. Just because you fear death or have a need for "dignity" doesn't mean religion is based in truth.
@greyhall1 The moderator is also a whiner who just loves sympathy. He wasted a lot of time moaning about his illness and how Christianity is for the weak...Hitch sure fixed his wagon!
Religion is like this: A bull is charging at someone, so they pretend the bull is a soft cushion, or they pray that a fictitious being will stop the bull.
Atheism: A bull is charging at someone, so they try and get out the way and then deal with the consequences if they are hit.
@mikeyo1234 Well, a Bull exists. No one knows if a god exists. So look at this way. A invisible being is charging at someone, so they pretend the being is a soft cushion, or they pray that another fictitious being will stop the being.
Atheism: A invisible being is charging at someone, so they try and get out the way and then deal with the consequences if they are hit which is exremely unlikely.
@mikeyo1234 I'm pretty sure my dog is religious then. We were hiking in the hills, when he stopped to use the bathroom in a field of grass. Unfortunately, he was near some cows that took offense to his presence. One of them began to run straight at my dog, who adopted a worried expression yet continued to try and finish using the bathroom as the cow got nearer.
Luckily, he finished in time to run away. That is clearly evidence that dogs have the one true God.
@vielbosheit I'm a bit confused by your comment. Sadly youtube doesn't display which comment of mine you replied to, so I don't know which comment of mine you're referring to. That's why I try and quote people to make it easier.
The other thing is that I'm an atheist. Your comment seems to mistake me for a theist, or you are joking, or you misunderstood my comment, or some other random reason :)
Anyway 'dog' is 'god' backwards, so maybe that's it?
That's evidence that cows have a claimed territory due to the want and need for survival, and your dog was smart enough to figure out that it would lose to one cow let alone many of them. Your dog likely picked up the scent of the cows shit and piss as territorial markers.
Your dog is smarter then you if you believe in any religion.
"atheism is for the strong and the intellegent. but christianity is for the weak and unintellegent." -- the moderator.... hahah not my words, those are his. but i cant help but agree.
Five against one certainly wasn't fair. I think the theists should make it 25 against one. Again, Hitchens would be the only one left standing. He is amazing.
@MrWagman11 well, maybe not for much longer. But by the beauty of youtube (and in some cases some copyright violations!) we are all able to see it, and keep a record of it.
@purereligion127 yes it is bad, religion takes advantage of the weak & weak minded by getting them to further thier agenda as in #'s, as in making policies that govern the masses, if religious freaks wouldnt keep shoving there agenda down our throats then i wouldnt have a problem with it, but power corrupts, even in religion........
May I ask: why do you write so poorly? Look, I understand that this is an informal setting, and (thus) to some extent typos must be, but the above is almost unintelligible. It's tempting to believe that you are doing so by design. Is this the case? I'm serious.
If it is the best that you can do, then so be it. But I want to know: is it?
@purereligion127 ya u cant awnser my response so attack the grammer, thats typical of people like yourself, change the subject & put the spot light them, & hide under the rock from where u came from, douce bag............
Well, I say, you attack my person b/c you cannot give an account of why you write so poorly.
As for not responding to you: are you kidding? I cannot even read significant portions of what you write! How am I supposed to respond to such chicken scratch? It's almost as if a monkey is randomly typing. Sorry, but it's true.
@purereligion127 lol u apparently u still cant respond to my post, u have no credible solution so u attack something so simple, when it comes to your intelec your a simlpeton compared to me, thats why u attack grammer, goober54 was rite about u, you have no relative reason to exist except to waste valuable resources that could keep others alive...........
Okay. Well, if Mr. Goober54 is right about me, then you should do as he's done. It's fine with me. Furthermore, if what you say is true--that you have presented some powerful argument to which I cannot respond--then so be it.
Pssp, pssp (in a whisper): But we know the truth, don't we? Take care.
You keep posting comments...are EVER going to back the three claims you made, or at least admit you can't? Or are you going to keep evading and running away like a pussy?
First, yes, the Bible teaches kindness. That's obvious for anyone who can read. Ironically, this is one of the complaints of CH--you know, his whole bit against the injunction of 'love your enemies'.
Second, no, it is not aimed at exploited the weak--you must have the Bible confused with the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche or Peter Singer or some other godless thinker.
its amazing the mod is calling christians weak & weak minded, finally a christian tells the truth about religion & there followers, there braindead sheep, lol
If you truly pointed out a grammatical error to me--not merely a typo b/c this is an informal setting--I would thank you.
In addition, when individuals present themselves as brilliant, they need to make sure they have basic things covered like the proper usage of pronouns.
Why are you so obsessed with winning? Let's be clear: in a setting like this, no one is going to win anything. Little points here and there may be made, but winning? Silly.
Furthermore, there are no winners or losers in this context. For this is no game. But, if you want to continue to trivialize this matter, please, feel free.
Who claimed otherwise? However, these comments ARE in the public domain, so when I expose someone as a fraud or for making false claims, the public embarrassment is a reward of sorts. ;)
"Little points here and there"
No evidence for your claims = not a little point. Nice try!
Okay, there is substance here, so I'll address it: again, stop the caricatures. I'm not going to play that game.
To the last remark about 'this is no game': no, it's not a religious threat. If I were an atheist, I would say the same thing--albeit w/no philosophical justification--but I would say the same thing. Get it now?
Okay, do observe that you care nothing about rational dialogue: I specifically say below, "Pick one, and I'll reply." You then respond pretending that I refuse to address ANY of the mentioned claims. Yet, I clearly write, "Pick one." The insincerity is overwhelming. This is why you're condemned.
@purereligion127 "Okay, do observe that you care nothing about rational dialogue"
You are confusing semantic games and base sophistry with rational dialouge.
"The insincerity is overwhelming. This is why you're condemned"
There you go, you did it AGAIN! Condemned BY WHOM?
You? Psh! I've exposed not just insincerity on your part, but outright falsehoods and unsupportable claims. None of it overwhelming, save perhaps in its repetitive stupidity.
@purereligion127 then you sir are a hypocrite, if u dont like my grammer oh well, grammer isnt a sign of intelligence, einstein was a genius, but sucked in english he had problems with reading, & some say math, fucking braintard........
Why am I a hypocrite? You're calling people idiots while at the same time failing in the basics of grammar. Your misuse of those pronouns was not typo; you're like the average person in America when it comes to education: you're not educated. So be it. However, as a man who is standing in a glass house, you should not be throwing stones.
As for Einstein's grammar: did you know him personally? This is commonly touted by folks like you but where is the evidence for this claim?
@purereligion127 well lets see its not about winning but what are you doing your trying to win this debate i would say thats being hypocritical wouldnt u, & im way above the average american because i have somthing you and most americans dont have common sense that keeps me from believing in fairy tales as in god shit, u can try to make yourself look superior because u know where a period goes, lol but when it comes to real world experience your lacking.......
I'm not trying to win a debate. Granted, I want to persuade human beings not to believe things that are false and to believe things that are true. However, this is not the same as 'winning debate'. This can be easily discerned if you just think about it.
As for your education, so be it. I'll take you at your word. However, in the future, I would (with caution) call other people idiots while failing to demonstrate a basic grasp of pronoun usage.
@purereligion127 um your an idiot and u demonstrated that with your holier than thou attitude, typical religious freak im better because i have god shit on my side hypocrisy..........
So, you refuse to be placated? Okay. However, yes, I am a better person than you. You're a foul, odious wretch. Not only does hatred of correction evidence this, but your writing exudes your gutter attitude.
@purereligion127 your the worst of the worst, the only thing that is foul is your god facade, does not your bible say judge not least ye be judged, or he who is not without sin cast the 1st stone, ya your a typical two faced relgious buffoon, your kind are the most vile pieces of two faced shit on this planet, & the biggest hypocrites of all, u have a nice day.....
Your life is foul and you know it. Stop lying. For once in your life, try telling the truth. Try to have a real moment with another human being--FTR, not me, someone else.
Till you do so, the miserable station that you now occupy will be where you stay till the end.
@purereligion127 tis a shame u live a life of lies. i hope the people around u see u for what u are a self rightious hypocrite & a pompas ass, your going to have to live with yourself, nevermind people like u have no conscience & are two faced.......
Yes, it is true that Christianity is for stupid people. This should give you some hope. At least on those grounds you will not be rejected.
Like in other segments, it's almost as if you're trying to miss the point. Don't you really see what he is trying to communicate? Please, for once in your life, tell the truth.
I saw a news clip the other day that had me livid. A woman was assaulted with a container of acid to the face, permanently scarring and disfiguring her for life. She actually thanked jesus for buying a pair of sunglasses earlier that day so she didn't lose her eyesight.... and actually credited him for "making" her buy them.

Rocketryman 6 months ago
Really Hitchens is arguing that if the Christian deity exists, then he is not worthy of worship, rather than that he does not exist. Which is a strong argument.
scepticthinktank 6 months ago
This shows why Dawkins is so much better than Hitchens. The former would've made some attempt to meet the cosmological and meta-ethical arguments, where as Hitchens, if he doesn't have an answer, just tries to fill the gap with flippancy, bluster and charisma.
scepticthinktank 6 months ago
@scepticthinktank In fairness, I think that Hitchens might think enough of most of the audience to think that everyone can realize why the Ontological Argument and many of the others are stupid, or is managing his time, and so he moves on. I think it probably is worth countering the arguments these guys put forward though.
ralph489 6 months ago
@scepticthinktank Flippancy? Can you explain this? How exactly was he flippant?
dborg321 6 months ago
@dborg321 The jokes.
Nothing wrong with humour, but not in lieu of answering the philosophical questions that were raised by the theists (which can be easily answered). You have to watch the whole debate to know what I mean.
scepticthinktank 6 months ago
@scepticthinktank Craig, who alone put forth I think 7 of those arguments, likes to debate by proposing a variety of erroneous or self-justifying theories and claims, watching his opponent try to dispel them all, shrugging and scoffing at the effort, and boasting about his victory. I suspect it's why in the more recent debates against him, like the one with Sam Harris, his opponents talk past him and to the audience directly. Letting WLC set the tone just doesn't pay off.

These Christians make stupid points, but I don't think Hitchens does a very good job at responding to them.
Walabinx 7 months ago
@Walabinx
He doesn't really try. He is not a scientist and isnt going to go after the stupidity of the cosmological arguments put out by scientifically illiterate quacks like Strobel and Craig, and he could a shit less for the stupid thought games that the others play. His point is simple, if you believe this crap you need to take responsibility for the evil that it does, and recognize that an all powerful tyrant leading your life is not something anyone should ever want.
theviolator23 7 months ago
@theviolator23 I know he doesn't try. That's my point. He should at least come up with some quick sound bites to adress those kinds of arguments, because I've seen him outright dismiss them before and I doubt it comes across very well to the theists/fence-sitters in the audience, who are often looking for any reason to cling to their faith.
Walabinx 7 months ago
@Walabinx
I agree, but understand that unlike the christians on the panel, he does not claim to be an expert on everything. He is a political scientist, a historian, and philosopher and therefore speaks to those subjects. It would be inappropriate (as it is for Craig and the rest) fir him to go up and talk about cosmology

Anyway 'dog' is 'god' backwards, so maybe that's it?
mikeyo1234 1 year ago
@vielbosheit

How about you stop fleeing like a kicked dog and BACK THE CLAIMS YOU MADE.
"Your life is foul"
This coming from the coward who makes outrageous claims and flees whenever someone questions them.
What a maggot.

@purereligion127 "I'm not trying to win a debate"
You were right up until I revealed your dishonesty and evasion tactics.
"believe things that are true"
And have evidence to support them...you know, like the EVIDENCE for the CLAIMS you made?
Why are all religitards such fucking cowards?

00:52 - so why would a god who loves and cherishes you give you this disorder? Holy crap, these men are idiots.
02:05 - ok, I get it. So it's, by your own admission, xtianity is for stupid people? Cool. At least you're honest.
