gotta love and respect the career and numbers of Gretzky, but there's no way he could've done those kinds of numbers today. Notice how many of his goals are shot from far out right into the middle of the net. With the size of the equipment today, there's just no way 90% of those would've gone in. He was also fortunate to play before the trap really slowed the game down. Gretzky was great, but comparing his numbers to crosby or ovie is just unfair to these guys. different game now.

Baseballeddie - NOBODY came close to Gretzky! While he was dominating the league he was winning scoring titles with just his assists! NOBODY has ever scored 200 pts in a season... Gretzky did it 4 times! Lemieux came the closest with 199 pts... but... Gretz also had a 196 point season. So if you count Marios 199 you have to count Wayne's 196. so, Gretz did it 5 TIMES Lemieux 1 time.
#99 is the best hockey player EVER. The only one that could hold an argument for best ever is Bobby Orr.
Goalies use to play without a helmet, now they play with so much padding that it makes it way easier, goalies from the past depended more on their reflexes and were real men, because i would never ever play without my goddamn mask. Goalies were arguably not as good as today I do agree, but Gretzky leads the NHL in almost everything. Crosby and Ovechkin are good, yes, now Stamkos is slowly getting to that level as well, but Gretzky is the great one, and we will keep being the great one
sidney and alex are better than gretzky, gretzky was good no doudt but you have to look at the goalie skills and other player skills compared to now, gretzky was ahead of his time making him the player he was
For all the guys saying that wayne wouldn't make in todays NHL,will wayne heard that all his life,Wouldn't make it in the tough OHL ,to small for the WHA,Never be a good player at the NHL level and so on.But he proved everyone wrong.Am i right?
Yes maybe if you took wayne out of the 80's and dropped him in to todays game he may have a little trouble, but if he was a starting out today wouldn't he get the same training as the rest therefor also be faster and stronger
@MrRob7004 The goalies are way better these days. Look at Gretzky's goals.. he wouldnt score 400 of those in todays NHL. Mario Lemieux was a better player. But one thing you can never take away from Gretzky - no one could or can see the game the way he does. Simply the best playmaker ever.
@Safeco1999 How can you say that goalies are better now.Why aren't they breaking any of the records held by goalies of the past.last year in the playoffs most coaches would have traded their top goalies for a young furr ,hextal or smith.montreal had the only goalie that won them games.
If you want see best individual players, look at best 10 of Bure or Jagr. Gretzky goals are ok, but nothing special. Goalies in Gretzky era looks like bunch of circus clowns!!
baseballeddie1177... This just shows how little you know. Yes, smaller goalies, higher scoring game back then, good teammates... BUT...
What you fail to mention is that, even in a high scoring league, Gretzky DOMINATED the competition. He won scoring titles with his assists alone! If the game was so much easier back then... how come nobody else ever came close to him?
@forklift26 That's what I say...It's really only fair to compare him to the competition back then. I think Eddie should get back to trashing Babe Ruth.
@forklift26 what do u mean ? Jagr and lemeiux came very close, and others scored 70 goals. In a nutshell training has made players very fast now where some had speed genetically like wayne.
The Goalies back in the day used to come way too far out of the net, the angles were horrible, no wonder the league was so high scoring in the 80's. Smaller pads were another reason too
Why do people always forget that Wayne also leads the league in assists? that kinda means he could set up goals pretty damn well. That's pretty fucking impressive for a guy who was supposedly protected all the time. Hell the people he was passing to like all the fucking time must have been protected too cuz Wayne has twice the number of assists as he has goals.
@NRPBrute Wayne was great obviously, but he had perfect conditions for him creating a perfect storm. Great hall of fame teammates-it was said by many that the oilers had the 5 best players in the world. Small goalies and slower players. In Waynes day fast skaters like him stood out , now almost every one of them is a speedster. Also ,the NHL is more of a tight checking league now.Waynes numbers would be about half in todays game, and thats a freik'n fact.
@baseballeddie1177 No, that's an opinion. A fact is verifiable, true or false, an opinion is supportable, agree or disagree. How can we take you seriously if you can't tell the difference? Fact: Gretzky played from 1978 - 1999. Fact: Roy from 1985 - 2003. Fact: Brodeur 1991 - present. How you interpret these facts is your opinion. Just remember though, opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one, and most of them stink.
@oehieze if that is your kid in your vids you should probably spend time helping him learn the game instead of scanning youtube and making dumbass comments...not everyone who plays is trying to "make it" as you say...if you don't agree that Gretzky played against the worst goalies ever you are a fool and know nothing about hockey.
No one will break his records. the goalies back then were home grown and were less trained than the ones today. thus the reason why there are less goals scored in nhl games today
@WhenIdiotsCollide2 U R quite true, also the average height of goalies drafted to the NHL in 2010 is 6 ft '1 '1/2. Not exactly like those midgets in net before. There is less room to shoot and with todays training these recent goalies are quick as well.
yeeeeeeeeaaaaah gretzky got the numbers because he had baby sitters lots and lots of baby sitters. he couldn't take a hit, he threw a couple of hissy fits when he got hit (clean checks).
@PapaBare100 you gotta be mentally tuff to play hockey, but agreed he was somewhat weak physically andipandered and favored by the refs and everyone for that matter.
@sparwood8 agree with you 100%--well 99%. After watching classic games I would not say that 'Orr is nowhere near this guy." If you ask Gretzky I bet he says Orr is unbelievable.
gretzky was the best because the players treated him like a king. lemieux would've been the best had he been respected like gretzky, but he got cheap shots all the time. not to mention his back problems and cancer. no disrespect to gretzky's skills, because he obviously was amazing, but lemieux was the best and always will be, at least in my opinion. not only was he fantastic on the ice, off the ice he is an amazing person.
Mario Lemieux has more points per game than any player in the NHL. Cancer, back injuries kept him from reaching Gretzky's numbers. though in the same year Gretzky had 215 points and Lemieux 199 points. No other players have gotten to 50 points of those numbers.
@christian16burzeseTV Yeah you're not allowed to hardly touch a player now, but Gretzky had to put up with slashes and hooks and high sticks and holding and tripping and butt ends and elbowing the whole game long. Gretzky still got 93 goals!!! And Ovechkin might get 30 this year LOLOLOLOLOLOL ovie is past his prime already and soon will be traded, maybe he'll go back to russia where he can score a few goals
@YouJussGotCurbed That's how good Gretzky was though. A lot of these punks who idolize Ovechkin have never even watched a full tape of a Gretzky game. I've watched many and he was unbelievable. And he didn't pee his pants and act like a hero everytime he scored like Alexis does.
@juzu4me Don't worry, I have watched so many of Gretzky's game...I can't imagine anyone better than him. As good as Wayne?...Okay...better? I'm not sure!
If anyone could satisfy the argument that Crosby is better than Gretzky, then that agrugment would parallel an argument that Babe Ruth isn't close to being a top all time baseball player, and we know that's bullcrap too, because he is.
with the debate surrounding whether or not any modern day hockey player compares to Gretzky is ridiculous. If anyone wants to compare how the players have evolved with more strength, speed, etc. has to also account for the evolution of technology which provides a bigger advantage for modern players as well.
The Numbers do not lie 8 years with 50 or more goals four years in a row where he scored more than 70 goals including the record 92 goals. To say that anyone was a better scorer is rubbish. While I will give Mario his due He just simply does not have the numbers to back up the claim that he was a better natural scorer. Lets not forget one simple fact Gretzky had 13 years in a row where he scored 40+ goals Mario 6 years at 40+ So just on the numbers Gretzky was the more natural goal scorer.
If he played with the sedin twins back than, 300point seasons for sure. everyone who plays with the sedins get goals. Anson Carter, than burrows, now samuelson.
What a reduction! Playing with Daniel Sedin would have helped GRETZKY? The other way around, my friend. Those two are very good players in today's NHL. Number 99 was unquestionably one of the four greatest to ever lace up skates. Do a little research on a pair of fellows named Jari Kurri and Luc Robitaille, and you'll see Wayne Gretzky had PLENTY of talented help throughout his career.
His dad was Canadian born (1/2 ethnic polish/russian) his mother is Canadian he is 1/4 russian 1/2 canadian 1/4 polish but he is Canadian your point would be like saying Michael Jordan should play basketball for team Africa(jk) when he is american because Canada/Usa are more culturally open then europe our ethnic roots were originally english/french but the fact is a Canadian is Canadian Guy
You can work it out mathematically that Gretzky is the greatest. I mean I don't need math to realize this but some do. Just take the average goals per game in Gretzky's day and do the same with Ovechkins. Then you take Gretzky's top year and adjust it to todays average goals per game. Grezky is still about 20 goals better in their best years. I'll show you how it is simply done if anyone asks me to
Are we talking about the same Crosby? The one who hoisted the Stanley Cup as captain last spring? The one who is tied for most goals this year? The one who is chomping to get going in Vancouver? Oh don't worry, you'll hear his name plenty. Just be patient, the time of reckoning is about to start in 2 weeks. Be patient.
Compare Crosby to Ovechkin if you want, but you can't really compare them to Gretzky (like I just did lol).
Until Wayne's records fall it's all just talk. Blah blah blah if ovie played back then he would blah blah blah and if he had Gretz's linemates blah blah and if Crosby had Jarri Kurri on his line and Coffey as a defenceman blah blah. You can't compare that.
Gretzky rules until someone takes him down. The NHL was just as much a jungle back then as it is now.
just to put this argument at rest between Crosby and Gretzky. A guy named mike krushelnyski scored 46 goals playing on the same line with Gretzky and he never scored more than 26 before. A guy name Bernie Nicols scored 70 with Gretzky and he never cracked the 50 goal barrier before. I always wonder before how many goals Brett Hull would've got if playing with Gretzky for a few seasons!!
he had that many brakeaways cuz he was that great. he might have had less brake aways but he still would have the most creative plays and goals you would see today . if he was 20 right now he would be picking the puck up and doin things crosby can't ever do
Maybe you don't understand boy, the NHL today is a whole lot different then it was back then. Gretzky played on a stacked team, in a league with so so defenceman and the goalies were no where near the quality they are now. So son maybe you should learn a little before you speak. By the way learn to spell Gretzky properly before commenting again. enough said boy!!!!
It does not matter what type of game the NHL is today. Don't be one of these Crosby bandwagon-ers that think he is God. I've played hockey all my life and i'm more than confident in what I say. I'm sure other people agree. But all when it's all said in done.....Wayne rewrote the record books and Crosby will not. A stacked team is that why they won the cup with him 4 times? Once after and then what? He then brough LA out of obscurity......so yeah.....get off Crosby's balls.
AHHH yea dumb ass!! that is why they won the cup the year after without him. What do you think they just won it because the league felt bad for them... hahaha.. Yes it does matter what the NHL is today, that is why you longer see teams win the cup back to back. Do you really think Gretzky would put up those type of numbers playing with Kunitz and Guerin as his wingers. If you think the answer is yes then go ask your Dad to smack you up side the head son.
Yes because Gretzky made everyone around him better. Ask how many people who think Crosby is better than Wayne and see how many agree. The wings won how many Cups close together can't remember if they did back to back in the late 90's, but I digress. So again.....don't hail Crosby as God yet.
I'm a huge Crosby and Gretzky fan.....Gretzky is the better player. No doubt. But you know, if Crosby can win a gold medal for Canada in a few weeks I just might change my mind
I am a fan of both as well. But think about it if Crosby was the better player he would've been on top of the league every season so far. Which isn't the case. This year is doing great. He has a cup already..but unfortunately no matter how good him and ovie are for today's game you just won't touch Gretzky.
Hey I'm a huge Crosbyy fan but in my opinion you can't Gretzky to him. Crosby's amazing, but Gretzky (and Lemieux) were in a league of their own. I mean at least wait about 10 years or so before anyone starts comparing. Gretzky had like 92 goals and 240 points one year (close to that) and no teammate makes you a player like that. And sure they won the Cup without him, but I think they would have won it with him and for a few more years if Gretzky had remained an oiler
Gretzky's best season was 215 in 85-86. Which is amazing. There is no doubt Gretzky was great, I think Lemieux, if he could have stayed healthy is whole career, would own some of Gretzky's records. My point is that Gretzky playing at 22 years old right now in the NHL, playing with Crosby's wingers would not be any better then Crosby...
Yeah but you don't know that dude. I have this debate with Ovechkin fans as well, and they always say that compared to Ovechkin, Gretzky is nothing. But seriously, Ovechkin is older than Gretzky was when he got his 215 points. And back then there was clutching and pick plays and interference and slashing and spearing every game. Gretzky had to go through hell to get his points, whereas Ovechkin gets to ballet around and no one touches him or he whines for a penalty.
You know it no surprise people always was concerned about his build but he was being critized about that all through jr,WHA,and the early years of the N.H.L but he silenced everyone after the 1981-82 season...we all know what happens after that so to say he wouldnt do well in todays n.h.l is stupid not only would he be the best he would use a wood stick hahaha .
if you listen to anyone who played with or against Gretzky they will say he had the ability to know where the puck was going better than anyone else who ever played the game. To call him lucky for being in the right place, is moronic. He must be the luckiest person alive for being in the right place for 20yrs!! gretzky was a playmaker who also scored more goals than anyone. Lemieux was a more natural scorer but gretzky was the ultimate playmaker.
@albertamortgageguy yeah it was also been said that he could find anyone on the ice even if the lights were off. and i believe it. no one will ever compare
I see some people here saying "he lack some eye candy, he is boring, he made a lot of them in empty net and he is not so fast on his skate"... All of that is truth and nobody should care because Greatzky get one think other player did not have: a brain. In that, watching Wayne Greatzky playing hockey is like watching a Garry Kasparov putting checkmate and K.O. Mick Foley in a wrestling match. The tactic use would be boring (not a "dance") and amazing (I mean brilliant) at the same time!
great comment! I can agree that he plays "boring" in a way.. He doesn't skate miraculous fast around 100 defenses, and hit the puck on volley, flying upside down in the air, getting the puck in the goal as a miracle.. because he doesn't NEED to.. Hockey is so easy for him that he doesn't need to put any astonishing physical effort.. he is the opposite to players who are great just because of a physicall advantage as for example being: fast, strong, agile or whatever... best one ever!
How many empty goals did he score? All of his highlights include empty nets in one way or another. If you check Orr's highlights there is NO comparison.
Gretzky made his living off garbage goals. Nothing wrong with that. I mean Esposito made a living as a garbage man in front of the net. Gretzky was an Esposito who could skate.
yes I watch hockey and yes I compared Gretzky to Esposito. Gretzky's games was around the net, as was Esposito's. I remember many times seeing Gretzky set up shop behind the net or just to the right. Espo would usually be out front.
BOTH men would take advantage of goalies getting out of position.
If you don't know this, then you have never watched hockey.
Wow, your stupidity is stunning!!! I can't even find the words to express how insanely retarded you are...... wow...... Wayne Gretzky is THE embodiment of sport. He isn't the Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, or Pele. Those people aspire to be the Wayne Gretzky of their sports. He is easily the most dominant human ever to participate in sport. Gretzky owns your ass faggot!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Youre stupidity is ever more appalling!!! Wayne Gretzky was one of the luckiest players to play the game. The only thing I can say about him is that he was always in the right place, miraculously, at the right time. I can think of so many more players that could easily own his ass. Most of the Red Wings for that matter!
@PozerSilo Ovechkin 529 points, 359 games.......almost at 1.5 points a game and his career just began. Gretzky is insane though and loved to watch him skate!!! Gretzky joked on an ESPN interview the year Ovi had his 65 goal season and he said Ovi scares him when it comes to numbers.
@PozerSilo you cant compare todays hockey to Gretzky's time, goalies today are much tougher to score on. the game goes 10 times faster and the physical game is much more present.
its still amazing for datsyuk to have those kind of stats in today's hockey
@PozerSilo NHL hockey has changed, players are bigger, faster and more defensive . Wayne would score about half in todays game. Back when he played you were born with speed or you were not, now there is high tech off ice training and the whole league has speed. Watch the wayne videos- he just blows past people, that wouldnt happne today.
@baseballeddie1177 Wanna bet? He still knew the game better than anyone else? Gretzky was never the biggest, fastest, hardest shooting, etc. in the league. Ever. He was the smartest. His knowledge of the game is one of the things that put him above anyone else. You make it sound like Wayne beat everyone just because of physical abilities which is simply not true. Don't forget he is also the leading passer in the league.
@NRPBrute wrong. he was one of the 10 fastest and had the best shot probaly ever, he could one timer a slapshot top shelf from near blue line. I just say in todays game his numbers would be about half.
More often than not if he is in the right place it is because he read the play. Sure sometimes you get lucky and the puck finds you're stick, but thats part of the game, and it doesn't happen too often.
On the all-time list of players to reach 1000 points the fastest, Wayne holds the number one spot....and the number two spot. It only took him 424 games for his first 1000, and only 433 more games to do it again. Unbelievable... that record will never be touched, not even close.
feels like the goalies has improved their techniques over the past 10 years

Some people want young white females to mix with non-white males.
I made a one-minute video highlighting a very tiny sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.

@Safeco1999 How can you say that goalies are better now.Why aren't they breaking any of the records held by goalies of the past.last year in the playoffs most coaches would have traded their top goalies for a young furr ,hextal or smith.montreal had the only goalie that won them games.

baseballeddie1177... This just shows how little you know. Yes, smaller goalies, higher scoring game back then, good teammates... BUT...
What you fail to mention is that, even in a high scoring league, Gretzky DOMINATED the competition. He won scoring titles with his assists alone! If the game was so much easier back then... how come nobody else ever came close to him?
forklift26 1 year ago
@forklift26 That's what I say...It's really only fair to compare him to the competition back then. I think Eddie should get back to trashing Babe Ruth.
Dane42o 1 year ago
@forklift26 what do u mean ? Jagr and lemeiux came very close, and others scored 70 goals. In a nutshell training has made players very fast now where some had speed genetically like wayne.
baseballeddie1177 1 year ago
The Goalies back in the day used to come way too far out of the net, the angles were horrible, no wonder the league was so high scoring in the 80's. Smaller pads were another reason too
sensationaldenny 1 year ago
Why do people always forget that Wayne also leads the league in assists? that kinda means he could set up goals pretty damn well. That's pretty fucking impressive for a guy who was supposedly protected all the time. Hell the people he was passing to like all the fucking time must have been protected too cuz Wayne has twice the number of assists as he has goals.
NRPBrute 1 year ago
@NRPBrute Wayne was great obviously, but he had perfect conditions for him creating a perfect storm. Great hall of fame teammates-it was said by many that the oilers had the 5 best players in the world. Small goalies and slower players. In Waynes day fast skaters like him stood out , now almost every one of them is a speedster. Also ,the NHL is more of a tight checking league now.Waynes numbers would be about half in todays game, and thats a freik'n fact.

atrain34007 1 year ago
@baseballeddie1177 No, that's an opinion. A fact is verifiable, true or false, an opinion is supportable, agree or disagree. How can we take you seriously if you can't tell the difference? Fact: Gretzky played from 1978 - 1999. Fact: Roy from 1985 - 2003. Fact: Brodeur 1991 - present. How you interpret these facts is your opinion. Just remember though, opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one, and most of them stink.

No one will break his records. the goalies back then were home grown and were less trained than the ones today. thus the reason why there are less goals scored in nhl games today
WhenIdiotsCollide2 1 year ago
@WhenIdiotsCollide2 U R quite true, also the average height of goalies drafted to the NHL in 2010 is 6 ft '1 '1/2. Not exactly like those midgets in net before. There is less room to shoot and with todays training these recent goalies are quick as well.

gretzky was the best because the players treated him like a king. lemieux would've been the best had he been respected like gretzky, but he got cheap shots all the time. not to mention his back problems and cancer. no disrespect to gretzky's skills, because he obviously was amazing, but lemieux was the best and always will be, at least in my opinion. not only was he fantastic on the ice, off the ice he is an amazing person.

Mario Lemieux has more points per game than any player in the NHL. Cancer, back injuries kept him from reaching Gretzky's numbers. though in the same year Gretzky had 215 points and Lemieux 199 points. No other players have gotten to 50 points of those numbers.

If anyone could satisfy the argument that Crosby is better than Gretzky, then that agrugment would parallel an argument that Babe Ruth isn't close to being a top all time baseball player, and we know that's bullcrap too, because he is.
plopowitz 1 year ago
with the debate surrounding whether or not any modern day hockey player compares to Gretzky is ridiculous. If anyone wants to compare how the players have evolved with more strength, speed, etc. has to also account for the evolution of technology which provides a bigger advantage for modern players as well.
plopowitz 1 year ago
The Numbers do not lie 8 years with 50 or more goals four years in a row where he scored more than 70 goals including the record 92 goals. To say that anyone was a better scorer is rubbish. While I will give Mario his due He just simply does not have the numbers to back up the claim that he was a better natural scorer. Lets not forget one simple fact Gretzky had 13 years in a row where he scored 40+ goals Mario 6 years at 40+ So just on the numbers Gretzky was the more natural goal scorer.

I'll show you how it is simply done if anyone asks me to
DoinThupidThings 2 years ago
Are we talking about the same Crosby? The one who hoisted the Stanley Cup as captain last spring? The one who is tied for most goals this year? The one who is chomping to get going in Vancouver? Oh don't worry, you'll hear his name plenty. Just be patient, the time of reckoning is about to start in 2 weeks. Be patient.
DoinThupidThings 2 years ago
Compare Crosby to Ovechkin if you want, but you can't really compare them to Gretzky (like I just did lol).
Until Wayne's records fall it's all just talk. Blah blah blah if ovie played back then he would blah blah blah and if he had Gretz's linemates blah blah and if Crosby had Jarri Kurri on his line and Coffey as a defenceman blah blah. You can't compare that.
Gretzky rules until someone takes him down. The NHL was just as much a jungle back then as it is now.
DoinThupidThings 2 years ago
just to put this argument at rest between Crosby and Gretzky. A guy named mike krushelnyski scored 46 goals playing on the same line with Gretzky and he never scored more than 26 before. A guy name Bernie Nicols scored 70 with Gretzky and he never cracked the 50 goal barrier before. I always wonder before how many goals Brett Hull would've got if playing with Gretzky for a few seasons!!
firetree99 2 years ago
he had that many brakeaways cuz he was that great. he might have had less brake aways but he still would have the most creative plays and goals you would see today . if he was 20 right now he would be picking the puck up and doin things crosby can't ever do

How many break a ways do you see in the NHL today. Hardly any. Most of his goals came on break a ways. He was good, but he's no Sidney Crosby!!!!!!!!
crosby78 2 years ago
@crosby78 haha come on now. Crosby will never accomplish what Gretsky did in hockey. Ever. Grow up son.
zachmarkham84 2 years ago
Maybe you don't understand boy, the NHL today is a whole lot different then it was back then. Gretzky played on a stacked team, in a league with so so defenceman and the goalies were no where near the quality they are now. So son maybe you should learn a little before you speak. By the way learn to spell Gretzky properly before commenting again. enough said boy!!!!
crosby78 2 years ago
It does not matter what type of game the NHL is today. Don't be one of these Crosby bandwagon-ers that think he is God. I've played hockey all my life and i'm more than confident in what I say. I'm sure other people agree. But all when it's all said in done.....Wayne rewrote the record books and Crosby will not. A stacked team is that why they won the cup with him 4 times? Once after and then what? He then brough LA out of obscurity......so yeah.....get off Crosby's balls.
zachmarkham84 2 years ago
AHHH yea dumb ass!! that is why they won the cup the year after without him. What do you think they just won it because the league felt bad for them... hahaha.. Yes it does matter what the NHL is today, that is why you longer see teams win the cup back to back. Do you really think Gretzky would put up those type of numbers playing with Kunitz and Guerin as his wingers. If you think the answer is yes then go ask your Dad to smack you up side the head son.
crosby78 2 years ago
Yes because Gretzky made everyone around him better. Ask how many people who think Crosby is better than Wayne and see how many agree. The wings won how many Cups close together can't remember if they did back to back in the late 90's, but I digress. So again.....don't hail Crosby as God yet.
zachmarkham84 2 years ago
I'm a huge Crosby and Gretzky fan.....Gretzky is the better player. No doubt. But you know, if Crosby can win a gold medal for Canada in a few weeks I just might change my mind
DoinThupidThings 2 years ago
I am a fan of both as well. But think about it if Crosby was the better player he would've been on top of the league every season so far. Which isn't the case. This year is doing great. He has a cup already..but unfortunately no matter how good him and ovie are for today's game you just won't touch Gretzky.
zachmarkham84 2 years ago
Hey I'm a huge Crosbyy fan but in my opinion you can't Gretzky to him. Crosby's amazing, but Gretzky (and Lemieux) were in a league of their own. I mean at least wait about 10 years or so before anyone starts comparing. Gretzky had like 92 goals and 240 points one year (close to that) and no teammate makes you a player like that. And sure they won the Cup without him, but I think they would have won it with him and for a few more years if Gretzky had remained an oiler
DoinThupidThings 2 years ago
Gretzky's best season was 215 in 85-86. Which is amazing. There is no doubt Gretzky was great, I think Lemieux, if he could have stayed healthy is whole career, would own some of Gretzky's records. My point is that Gretzky playing at 22 years old right now in the NHL, playing with Crosby's wingers would not be any better then Crosby...
crosby78 2 years ago
Yeah but you don't know that dude. I have this debate with Ovechkin fans as well, and they always say that compared to Ovechkin, Gretzky is nothing. But seriously, Ovechkin is older than Gretzky was when he got his 215 points. And back then there was clutching and pick plays and interference and slashing and spearing every game. Gretzky had to go through hell to get his points, whereas Ovechkin gets to ballet around and no one touches him or he whines for a penalty.

The tactic use would be boring (not a "dance") and amazing (I mean brilliant) at the same time!
therrydicule 2 years ago 3
great comment!

Gretzky was an Esposito who could skate.
jcelephant68 2 years ago
do you even watch hockey, you just compared gretzky to esposito. watch a fucking game
daleeross 2 years ago
yes I watch hockey and yes I compared Gretzky to Esposito. Gretzky's games was around the net, as was Esposito's. I remember many times seeing Gretzky set up shop behind the net or just to the right. Espo would usually be out front.
BOTH men would take advantage of goalies getting out of position.
If you don't know this, then you have never watched hockey.
jcelephant1968 2 years ago
A lot of Gretzky's milestone goals are empty netters (500th goal, 39 in 50), that's why they're shown often in the highlights.
And Gretzky scored a lot of garbage goals, as well as breakaways, slapshots, deflections... He's the greatest scorer ever to play the game.

Don't forget he is also the leading passer in the league.

More often than not if he is in the right place it is because he read the play. Sure sometimes you get lucky and the puck finds you're stick, but thats part of the game, and it doesn't happen too often.

My favorite of Gretzky's records:
On the all-time list of players to reach 1000 points the fastest, Wayne holds the number one spot....and the number two spot. It only took him 424 games for his first 1000, and only 433 more games to do it again. Unbelievable... that record will never be touched, not even close.
