  • AND WHILE GUS WAS AT ARKANSAS, HE WAS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND ONE OF HIS ASSISTANTS AND HIM CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF RUNNING THE "WILD HOG" WITH MCFADDEN AT THE QB POSITION, THEY DIDN'T INVENT IT THEY RE-INVENTED IT AFTER IT WASNT BEING USED. SO HAPPEN GUS ASST LEFT AND WENT TO TULSA AND HIS ASST WENT TO MIAMI, AND THERE IS WHERE GUS FORMER ASST INSTALLED IT AT MIAMI. GUS HAS RUN SEVERAL WILDCAT PLAYS AT AUBURN. TYPE IN CAM NEWTON TOUCHDOWN RECEPTION OUT OF THE WILDCAT.

  • PPL DIDNT THINK THIS WOULD WORK IN THE NFL, AND IT DID, I THINK THE SPREAD WILL WORK WITH THE RIGHT PERSONEL, THERES NO SUCH THING OF A PLAY CANT WORK, IF PLAYERS DO THEIR ASSIGNED JOB ANYTHING COULD WORK. JUST LIKE A TRICK PLAY, THERES NO SUCH THING AS A TRICK PLAY. EACH & EVERY SNAP IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE A DEFENSE, BLOCK TO GET PLAYERS OUT OF THE WAY AND MISDIRECTION. ITS THE DEFENSE JOB TO BE PREPARED FOR THE NEXT DOWN

  • @MrAUFANATIC Teams use spread concepts occasionally, but the problem is the amount of athleticism the NFL has, a safety can cover a great range, and so run support could be higher. Also, since your QB takes more shots it will by far shorten his career.

  • Gus didn't invent it. Gus started using it at Arkansas. One of GUS asst's went to Miami and ran the play there. If it wasn't for Gus the Dolphins wouldnt have used it. But the play was not invented by GUS at all

  • Gus runs the Wildcat.

    Nutt runs the Wildmoron.

  • @Bchill27 too funny! It's going to be interesting to see Nutt w/ a new QB this year.

  • I think that time has revealed the truth as to which coach is better. Malzahn is coaching a team to a national title, while Nutt (in the same division) is at the very, very bottom. This is giving Nutt three years to build a masterpieceofshit, while Malzahn has been at Auburn for two seasons. You Nutt lovers can suck it. Gus is the real deal. Get used to his name, too, because he'll be a Head Coach real soon while Randy Quaid's broyher, Nutt, is out selling used cars.

  • Dude Gus Malzahn didnt make this stuff which is called the "Wildhog" it was Houston Nutt's brother Danny Nutt. Gus Malzahn didnt run his offense at Arkansas because Nutt wouldn't let him. lol child please get your facts straight.

  • ..the greatest formation

  • Malzahn is a genius. Auburn was terrible last year. They'll be at LEAST 8-4 this year. All that, and the SEC is much tougher this season.

  • Oh geez, more Gus love... Seriously, this guy neither invented this decades-old formation or the hurry up offense. Get off his slimy -- used his players to get into college coaching -- jock.

  • Also go look up who invented the Wildcat Formation, it wasnt GM either on that. The wildcat came from the Wing-T and was invented Steve Bush or Hugh Wyatt, Wyatt a high school coach at the time published an article in "Scholastic Coach" magazine in 1998 5 years before Gus Malzahns book "Hurry Up No Huddle — An Offensive Philosophy" was published. Wyatts offense led directly to the A-11 offense.

  • Go look at when the Hurry-Up offense was actually ran as a standard formation.

The 1988-89 Cincinnati Bengals Coached by Sam Wyche were the first to employ it as a standard formation. This offense is nothing new, and GM def did not invent it.

  • he didn't call the plays but he can take the credit right?! sounds like a win - win situation.. To bad he's going to suck in Au-Burn

  • you clearly don't know what youre talking about. he brought the wildcat to arkansas and called the plays when the hogs were on their big winning streak until nutt decided to step in and lose the last 3 games of the year. hell do just fine at auburn because he has a proven offensive mind. take that one to the bank.

  • Go look at the offense we ran when Matt Jones was here, we ran the zone read all the time, and go check out the Single Wing Offense. The only difference in that and the HUNH is the QB is in the Shotgun and the offense does not huddle.

  • im sorry but you just can't call it a coincidence that once malzahn got to AR the offense became exponentially better and once he left production dropped off. its because he was good at his job until he wasnt able to do his job anymore. true with the tulsa thing but he shouldnt have a problem getting better talent at auburn than at tulsa

  • Comment removed

  • actually he had his best stats after leaving ark when he was at tulsa

  • Exactly when things went right at Ark he got the credit, and when the Hogs lost it was all Nutt, cant beat that at all. Great offensive mind but got to get better players or it will be just like it was at Tulsa, destroy inferior talent, but lose to equal or better talent.

  • Seriously when he succeeds its Malzahn's play calling when he fails Nutt called the plays.

  • i suppose that could be right but the difference is he thought to put darren mcfadden there because he recognized the talent. running that offense with a qb and with a multitalented back are different. he got credit because when he was actually getting to do his job the hogs were winning but when nutt's ego got too big he stepped in and thats when the losses started coming. in his defense they were to 2 great teams (lsu and fl) and a mediocre wisconsin team but losses nonethless

  • love that offense !!

  • Gus Malzahn def did not invent the WildCat formation, neither did Danny Nutt, David Lee or anyone at the U of A. It is a variation of the Single Wing. But the zone read was ran at Arkansas with Matt Jones at QB.

  • The Hugh Wyatt version is VERY different from the Wild Hog version. Wyatt's is a variant of the double wing, while Malzahn's was taken from ideas Bill Snyder used at K-State (hence the name Wildcat for the formation...) The Wild Hog is much more of a spread offense variant and has very little to do with Wyatt's offense. The point is, if you have some great runners and you can spread the field, it's a very difficult thing to deal with!

  • the wild cat is a grade school offense that was made by hugh wyatt in 97 while the wild cat is based off single wing ideals, its closest relative is the double wing and it wasn't invented by a fuckin college coach, this hugh wyatt guy was like a junior high/ high school coach, its a shame he doesnt get more credit. Im a patriots fan since the early 90's and I cannot beleive that me knowing that and all its base plays a pro defensive staff couldnt stop it from scoring 4 times. Ridiculous lol

  • I didn't know David Lee worked WITH Gus Malzahn... they should've just said Lee, who Nutt hired behind Malzahn's back, while keeping a couple of his plays

  • I thought Danny Nutt "invented" it. What a joke! I can't believe David Lee has a job in the NFL while Gus Malzahn is still at Tulsa. Malzahn has never claimed to have invented this offense, he has just brought it with him from his HS coaching days and IT WORKS! He has also perfected the "Hurry-up no huddle" which seems to be spreading like wildfire.
