brilliant . very nostalgic I rember streaks as we called them back in the sixties very distinctive whisltle we would hear them and run to the railside to watch them race past, brilliant thanks.
Very nice video......a great sense of speed waching it. I have had the honour of travelling on a train hauled by the Bittern (of which I have posted a film) and the experience of speed you get being on board that train at 75 miles an hour is equally mind blowing.....can't imagine how it would be travelling at 100 miles an hour which I understood they did regulary during service.....absolutely great machines and a great video to show it!!
Unfortunately the maximum speed of steam locomotives on British Rail metals is 75mph, this class of locomotive holds the world speed record of 126mph and ran all of their lives at well over 100mph so its not really running at full speed great video anyway
I think I just died due to overexposure to awesome. That sounded like a supersonic jet plane rather than a stean engine. This is why I think I should've been born in Great Britain in the 1930s rather than the United States in the early 2000s. Amazing video, man.
@Lisavinny A4's are my favourite as well. The look and sound of that Streamlined Steam is amazing as it cuts through the air at running speed. There is a story about "Sir Ralph Wedgewood" on Youtube that brought a tear to my eye. It is made with model trains like "Thomas the Tank engine" but with real historic facts and a great narrator.
@teredude Are you refering to the British Railway Series? If so, I love that series too. I envy everyone in GB because of your fatastic steamers. With the exception of 844 and 4449, barely any steam locos run on the main line. Again, great video. Shows the A4 at it's absoulute best.
Nice to see the old girl still going strong. She was based up at Ferryhill in Aberdeen in the early 60's up until the withdrawal of steam and worked the Aberdeen-Glasgow 3 hour trains. You don't realise just how much power there is in those engines until you are on the footplate at speed and get shaken from side to side by each piston stroke, 80 odd tons of locomotive shaken from side to side 5 or 6 times a second - frightening!
As young boy in the 50's/60's I recall seeing U.o.S.A along with many other A4's A1's A2/3's at speed through Newark Station and the 1st sighting of prototype DELTIC running the ECML...thanks for the upload...John
Whew! He was booking through there, for sure! I agree, the A4s were always at home at speed, although that's nowhere near how fast they can really roll along.
If I ever visit the UK, I'd be sure to go have a look at one up close and in steam.
@TrackMaster555 If you think that was fast imagine you standing on that station platform and mallard rushing through at 126 miles per hour. That would be one hell of a site.
Not really at full speed. More like 60 mph. The limit is 75 mph. There are other videos of 60009 at 75 mph. Look at the video of the pass through Chippenham. The actual "full speed" is over 100 mph if British Rail (or whoever manages that section) would allow it. Good video apart from bighead obstructing the view.

Great Footage, and to all the people saying it's not top speed, I'm sure he meant top speed in preservation.

Even though I was sitting at home watching this video, I could feel that train thundering by. Great video my friend and thanks for posting!

All preserved steam is restricted to 75mph, and that sure wasnt 'full speed' for these in their hayday.

@droceretik Looking at other videos, I would say around 75mph. The Chippenham video was taken in the dark which always makes the speed look faster.

Thank you for your comments. I am 69yrs old and that is the first time I have ever seen an A4 at full speed, wonderful.

excellent. It never seems right the likes of the A4s, Deltics etc stuck to 25mph on a preserved line.
