What you espoused here certainly applies to me. It took 5 years of research on 9-11 to realize that it was one card in a large deck and as soon as I realized that I was the sucker in that game I folded my hand and came home.

Now I see the fields on the other side of this fence and I'm a travelin' man and happier than I've ever been!

I recall reading an artist's response to their motivation for work which was, "I'm just trying to make sense out of these dark times we're living in."  And also, somewhere on the internet, a man lamenting the fact that he has noting at all in common with his neighbors who spend their time jogging, shopping for cars, drinking cocktails and stoking each other's football mania. And the biggest problem he saw is that there were not any other kind of people to find "out there".

That was an incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking thesis on the zeitgeist of our times. I know that for me, as I have always loved literature, a watershed moment was discovering the novels of Philip K. Dick. His relentless and seemingly fruitless search for salvation amongst the ruins of modern society was very inspiring. And I wonder--if he had found the little wizard behind the curtain at the end of his journey--would either one have had anything meaningful to say to each other?

A note on 9/11 for me. That day I was shook to the core, but what was more disturbing were the people around me and their reactions; some saw it as "no big deal" while others were completely indifferent. As for me the significance was monumental. I had been sleep walking through life, yet I could plainly see the incredible symbolism in the act itself. I don't know what the "real" story is, but what I do know is that it was the beginning of a great change some of us are experiencing presently.

Anyone doing anything to nudge the snoring masses into waking up a bit has value, I think the Alex Jones style appeals to a certain kind of person. To me, he is like one of those outrageous characters in sideshow alley who catch everyone's attention as they walk by. I can take Alex for about 5 - 10 mins, then I get dizzy. The role of conspiracy theory presented here makes an incredible amount of sense to me and I recognize my own journey through its tangled undergrowth in this interpretation.

I passed through the Alex Jones phase in 5 minutes. It helped that I knew so much deep history before I ever encountered him. He is not a gateway drug to conspiracy theory so much as a gatekeeper for the channel that siphons awakening minds back into the corral. Spot on analysis. I started out as a conspiracy lemming; listened to Alex Jones, watched the videos, etc. Then I started to read classic literature (Gulliver's Travels, Goethe's Faust) and 20th century philosophy (Lewis Mumford, Joseph Campbell, Marshall McCluhan) and I feel more at peace with the world, despite it getting worse and worse, than I ever have.

Christianity melded spiritual salvation with personal philosophy and it worked for 1000 years. Westerners need something more now.

The classic myths of Theseus, Hercules, Gilgamesh and Odysseus - to cite just a few - are what the ancients put out as journey/development clues or 'blueprints' for the individual 's possible development. What is surprising is how universal they are. I like what conclusion you have come to with the hero's journey, mythos, it IS reminiscent of Chiron, (symbolically, astrologically) and Prometheus about the morally wounded healer, giving his life to save Prometheus. What that really means we must try to explore in our own lives, that there may or may not be an external "savior" but even the hero's journey mythology is being exploited by those who would keep us, watching films and reading comics waiting for that external event, when its within.

Self doubt is also more psychologically healthy than deluding oneself into thinking you know all the answers based on repeating something. Talking bullshit and then finding out later it was bullshit and then moving on is perhaps one of the most psychologically healthy things.

When you believe you have all the answers your brain literally starts to die as no new neural pathways are being developed anymore. I suspect this is what drives much of the visceral hatred against CTers.
