  • There's two types of hiccups... :)

  • subscribed!!! your my guitar hero!!! hehe

  • is that a factory strat-o-tele? or did you put that humbucker in the neck yourself? It looks like you moved the standard tele neck down and replace it with a humbucker

  • I got in big trouble for turning on the 'dirty channel'. Excellent lesson, have been too embarrassed to ever ask how amp settings really work.

  • Its true, you do learn something new everyday. Thanks..

  • I have a slight problem with humming/buzzing, I've a Shecter 006 deluxe guitar, it's with 2 humbuckers, right now I also have a roland 30x amp. The problem is that my guitar hums just way too much, and I've checked that it's not the amp, so it must be the guitar, When I touch any metal on the guitar (like the volume/tone knob) the hum/buzzing kind of stops. I've been to where i bought my guitar and addressed this but they said its ok ... I've nothing to do now, maybe you know what's wrong??

  • @gytis5454 I have the same thing on my Patrik Eggle Berlin, it's because the bridge isn't grounded (electrically). On a Strat (for example) there is a ground wire connected to the tremolo (you can see it inside the back cavity) and this connects the tremolo/bridge and hence also the strings to ground. I'm not sure on a guitar with a Gibson-style tuneomatic bridge how easy it would be to get a ground wire on to it but that's what you would need.

  • @LucysDadPlaysGtr

tune-o-matic bridges are usually used with stop bar tail pieces which are mounted on studs. When you install ur studs you usuallly have a ground wire squeezed between the stud mounting piece and the surrounding wood, Hope that explains!

  • U rock

  • justin youre the best teacher in the world

  • SEE THIS:

    Turn Radio into Guitar Amp:

    youtube.com/watch?v=YHfoON7ukSc

  • thanks that video helped a lot :)

  • Strangely enough.... lol

  • lol dirty Channel

  • btw the smaller the amp the better it sounds with distortion?

  • @WTFROFLMOA555 no, thats not what he said. he said that a small amp cracked up to eleven sounds better than a 200watt kept on 1.

  • what you said near the end about 6-8 mins in you said about finding the right tone i find that true my dad is nearly 60 and hes been playing guitar for 40 years and recently bought me a gibson les paul studio and a marshall mg50fx i think and once i started to play it he said that most of the tones he has been looking for was in that amp and guitar

  • I just love your teaching working, but I got the same amplifier 12", and it's not quite the best to show how "normal EQ settings works". Because this product it's overly engineered, too good to be normal!

In real situations I found strange settings can work: cut the lows, back the mids a bit, treble on halfway.

  • My amp is about half the size of yours but it only has gain on it I think when I get better I'll get a bettr 1

  • 6:26 MASTER!!!!

  • 3:45 A woman groaning?

  • Very helpful - thanks

  • 0:34 ...there's two types of hick...pickups. hehe

  • 0:27-0:33 They do NOT pick up the sound! They take the interference of the magnetic field created by the steel string (mechanical energy) and convert it to electrical energy (the signal). A transducer.

Yes, I'm being picky but you can't just say "They pick up the sound". If you're going to explain guitars/amps you're going to have to be explicit.

    Sorry :-(

  • @Avalon888 I see your point, but it really is irrelevant to say that, just as well as this comment actually, but still

  • I know, I know. It's picky but we can't just let little lies/innacuracies through, especially when we're dealing with new players or children. If we do, these "facts" become common knowledge and replace the truth. How many people were told by "experts" in the 80's that microwave ovens cook from the middle outwards? Were YOU told that? It's completely incorrect but it's now become common knowledge. We're moving into a new age of scientific awareness. Now, more than ever, we need to be accurate.

  • Avalon, now you are the one that is wrong. It is common knowledge that microwave ovens cook from the middle outwards. Ask anyone with just a little knowledge of microwaves and they will tell you this.

  • @SRM335: Um, sorry. Might I suggest that you: A - Read about, then consider how microwave ovens work (Wikipedia is always a good starting point, or search the Internet for "microwave cook from the inside out"). B: Try it. Get a piece of meat, a loaf of bread or something similar, chuck it in the micowave for one minute. Test the surface temperature then test the core temperature with a thermometer. Finally C: Consider "How does the microwave know when it's in the middle of the food?"

  • @Avalon888 That's more in depth than this tutorial is intended. If this was an in depth video on how pick-ups work, then sure.

  • noob

  • How i give it the sound like in sweet child o mine??

  • One-off LP copy, a Marshall Jubilee series that's not made anymore, and Alnico Pro II pickups

  • Or more standard would be Gibson Les Paul through a Marshall stack, probably a JCM 800 or something. The modern ones are generally not as good

  • are "high" and "low" the same as clean and dirty? (they are two different inputs on my epiphone amp)

  • No the high and low mean your output. If your guitar has high output pickups u put it in the "high" if u have a low output pickup it goes in "low". a good way to put it is if u have active pickups or a similar passive, "High". If ur using most passive pickups...use low. hope it helps (:

  • Yes, the clean and dirty channels from this mesa boogie would be like the low and high inputs from your epiphone, but both amps work in different ways.

Some people uses a/b boxes to change through the inputs on amps like this.

  • What so the two single coils together is a humbucker, not just two single coils??

  • Depends how the wiring is, you have In Series or Out of Phase, I can't remember which way round (I think its In Series) but that is the 'standard' way of wiring and that means two single coils together are Humbucking, however I think Out Of Phase means they still Hum.

  • what type of amp settings would you have for ac/dc sort of stuff like you shook me all night long? thanx

  • nice mesa 5:25

  • Wait....so I couldn't get a sound like Jimmy Page's guitar in the song Since I've Been Loving You on a regular amplifier? Do I need an effects pedal? What about, say, the Sweet Child of Mine solo by Guns N Roses? Also not possible on a normal amp?

    Thanks ;-)

  • well sweet child needs a wah pedal which i have never seen built into an amp lol, vox makes good wah's for like 80-120 bucks, but if you are looking for everything in one, go with a line 6 multi effects, or a boss me series. i don't personally like them, but i'm sure they aren't ALL rubbish. haha

  • LOL I like the dirty channel.....

  • this and part one really helped me, thanks a lot :D

  • man, that was great

  • Nice video Justin! I use an express 5:50... the 25w with a 12 was not available at the time. I find that when any of the tone knobs for treble, middle and bass are above 12 o'clock, the burn channel is really hard to tame. any advice? I'm putting a PRS Custom 22 through it.

  • so pro this helps so much i fail when it comes to amp settings

  • thank you, that was useful !

  • What is the difference between overdrive and distortion? Are they the same or are they completely different?

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, ok. My amp says overdrive but it doesnt sound like you described it. It sounds very distorted, sometimes even with low gain. But I'll fix it.

  • I'm not entirely sure if this is correct, but distortion is effects based, like its created by the amp or a pedal. Overdrive is over-driving the signal, basically giving it a lot of gain.

  • you are my hero. xD

  • justin, i think i love you :)

  • 6:26 Master of puppets! Hehe!

  • This was very informative. MOAR like this one, please?

    Also, 5*

  • thanks! your a good man

  • Hey ive always had a doubt that no one adresses in their videos.

Is it safe to have the gain and master volume to max on the distortion channel at the same time?

Im a bit paranoid because a friend of mine busted his speaker by playing with the gain all the way up and the volume on about 4oclock. But his amp was a cheap chinese brand.

Do you think i would blow up the speaker my amp (marshall mg15cdr) if i played with the gain and volume at max on the distortion channel?

  • umm...i dont THINK you will, but to be honest, im not completly sure because ive been paranoid with my bass and guitar amps...but i doubt that it will hurt it...but maybe u should be safe and play NEAR full gain and master volume...like, one or two notches below =)

  • well in reality u shouldnt be able to cause usually the speakers have more wattage than the amp itself...(safety against it) so even if its cranked it shouldnt affect it.

  • im not talking about putting to much wattage into the speaker, im talking about blowing up the speaker, i know that it depends alot in the song ( i blew up my friends speaker by playing master of puppets with the gain maxed and the volume at about 2 o clock.) but i want to know if amp speakers are made to withstand the maximum volume the amp can pump out without breaking the cone.

  • well it should only blow if u put too much wattage in it (which is impossible unless uve switched the amp).

  • i havent got a clue what my amp is, all it says on it is DH-75B

i googled that and its a plane!

    help!

  • hahaha a plane :)

  • tasmanian devil or something like that

  • What the shit is that anaimal at the end!

  • I think his piles blew out from lugging that beautiful but heavy Mesa about.! Pouting and angry poopers are part and parcel of having good gear.Good thoughts thoughts though Justin. Cheers M8

  • looks like a wolverine

  • spider's suck, in 3 months you will realize and shoot yourself.

  • MASTER OF PUPPETS!!

  • dude tell me the name of the last song u played i love it! it rocks! yeah !

  • its the master of puppets by metallica

  • do yall hear that at 3:34-3:35.... i swear it sounds like some 1 just pushed play on a tape recorder and a girl moaning?... m not trying to be sick... im just being honest...

  • i mean 3:43 to 3:45

  • I know..what the fuck is that? O_o, I thought it was a ghost.

  • i got nothing... i heard nothing at all

  • It sounds like the tape head in the camera moving. I used to hear that in my old DV tape camcorder quite often.

  • humbucker = buck the hum -> I never knew that!! that's so cool!!

  • haha dont deffen your self! aha reminds me of when me and my dad dug out a old amp and its 100 watts and he was turning the master up and im like what the hell are you trying to do, blow up the house?

  • look at the very end

    you'll shit bricks

  • i don't have a gain control, fender stage 100 amp

  • in terms of treble and rhythm pickups, which one would correspond to each of your pickups, even though i only have 2, which i think are humbuckers, because i have a les paul

  • in general your neck pickup is the "rhythm" pickup, some people like it for lead and all that but its a matter of preference, all in all it has alot more mids and usually a thicker tone.

your bridge pickup is your more trebly pickup (i think i just made that up) more treble (highs) and is the preferred pickup for leads.

    hope that helped =)

  • helped a lot! thanks!

  • @Dodge99X true,

Eric Clapton and Slash however sometimes use the neck pickup with tone all the way down for their leads, the so called Woman Tone ;)

  • i bought a 100W amp to play on gigs cause' where i play they dont mic amps, so i needed high output.

  • I really like these lessons. They're great!

  • Master of Puppets !!!!!!!!! I know he would play that :P

  • i have a washburn bad dog amp, is it good?

  • I you like it yourself, why should you care what other people think about it?

  • yeah he is the king....you rock

  • JUSTIN IS THE KING!

  • could i hook two amps up together to get sound from both on stage

  • you're a great teacher. thank u!!!

  • mate of puppets hellz ya

  • bad amp + good guitar < bad guitar + bad amp

bad guitars, to me, are more limiting on playability than sound, and through a good amp, they still sound god

  • True... You can have a really cheap guitar that isn't very good but through a good amp it will still sound good.

  • It's not an amp demo artard...

  • dude why are you so awesome

  • hey can you tell me how to get the input piece out of the hole, because it broke off and got stuck,i dont want to break anything,so whats the safest way,id really appreciate your patience,i really need this,oh and its a marshall amplifier

  • thanks again justin, always so helpful and informative

  • <3 crossroads and your videos :P

  • was it me or was there a tazzy devil or sumthing at the end of the vid?

  • yer... GO THE TAZZIE!!

  • Hey man, your videos really help me alot! Thanks!

  • I have a MP3/cd input on my amp . What is that for?

  • You plug your mp3 player or CD player into that jack, and jam along with whatever song.

    wooh that rhymes :P

  • Hopefully that gives you an idea of what all the NOBS do lol

  • justin can you do another one of those fast rock licks vids that was very very very helpful also you ROCK BIG TIME

  • that heavy metal riff is masster of puppets!!!!!

  • you are right

  • No, its "The Trooper" by Judas Priest, it was on their Cowboys From Hell-record released 1990.

  • haha i luv how no1 got that joke and actually gave u negative thumbs or watever

  • I guess people just dont understand heavymetal humor anymore! ;)

  • For those of you who don't know,

The trooper - song by Iron maiden

Cowboys from hell = an album by pantera

  • lmao, and i beleive megadeth released a song called number of the beast on their bebut album "master of puppets"

  • Actually, Megadeth released "Number Of The Beast" under the name of Led Zeppelin on their album A Night At The Opera, that was later covered by Kiss on their debut album called And Justice For All.

Damn kids, dont know their metal! >;(

  • lmao, and they had a hit single of an old beethoven peice called sympohony of destruction, on the album called 2112

  • what he doesnt tell you is that his little amp costs like £1000 haha

  • if you lived in my country i would pay a lot to have you as my teacher ;)

  • so good guitar + good amp = good sound, right? ok, got it!

  • thank you very much.. ^_^

  • thats your opinion!!! some people like mesa

    i use marshalls

  • no shit it's his opinion!

    who's else should it be?

  • such a helpful teacher, really has given my guitar playing a necessary boost! thanks

  • what is it wi dat thing at end??

  • its a tasmanian devil.

  • LOL cool

  • how much does a Mesa Boogie 5:50 cost

  • About 2000$

  • justin... no.... please... i love your lessons... don't tell me you were serious about scooping your mids...

  • I just had a look at that Messa Boogie amp. bit too pricey for me. what do you make of the Peavey Classic 30? need something under £500 just for home noodling and half-arsed recordings.

  • nice one. i need a new amp cos my cheapo marshall mg is playing silly buggers. I have a tip for old style blues sound. on the dirty channel turn the master volume right up and turn your guitar volume up from 0 until it just kicks in and you get a really great bluesy sound kinda like a Johnny Guitar Watson or T-Bone Walkerish sound. I have a gibson so i don't know if it works with a strat type or other metal type guitars.

  • i have a medium sized marshall amp and a stratocaster that sound better thanks to this video, thanks dude.

  • informative vid, but next time you should run sound through a mic into an interface, that way you can capture more of the nuances of the things you are talking about (like when you were switching pickups and when you were manipulating the mid control). You can hear it, but you'd need to know what to listen for.

  • pmg i was just wtahcing the the new vid u put up and ur hair grows wuick lol

  • what are those things on the side of his head? can i buy them on the internet and how much do they cost?

  • heyy call me an idoit for asking but when i bought my guitar which was about an hour ago the pick ups had like tape on them i should take it off right???

  • yeah and theres some on the pick gaurd to take it off!

  • Those are just for protection from dusts. Nothing that can effect your guitar.

  • thanks

  • Once again, a very helpful and informative video

    Thanks

  • how many times did he say pickup?

  • 24. I was bored and already know this video well so... i counted.

  • he shouldve said theres 4 kinds of pickups single coil humbuckers passive and active and explained the difference a bit

  • passive is good, metal is for metal riffage and nothing else.

  • lol you started playing Battery

  • It's Master of Puppets not Battery.

  • yea at about half the speed lol

  • What kind of amp is that?

  • he said in the first video

  • I am so impressed with your lessons and work ability. Thankyou. I am quite poor right now, and I can't afford lesson. Especially, not work class lessons. THANK YOU!

  • does a guitar amp head still make a sound if its not connected to a cabinet ?

  • no, it doesn't have any speakers

  • yeah dont play a head without hooking it up to a speaker. you'll fry it

  • what size amp would you use for practice in a 2 car garage were u also have to compete with the drums bass and vocals

  • Can you do a thing on belt amps or just post a reply to this, thanks-great vid

  • is that a mic strapped to your elbow?

  • Great, how about an acoustic amp roundup?

  • nice when you played the crossroads lol

  • i have a drive nob ; what is it for ???

  • Its the same as gain mate

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't scoop your mids! Mid scooping leads to having any presence in the mix; it might sound fine at home on your own but in a band it will, without fail, sound like crap.

  • so true. Guitars are midrange instruments. Removing the mids will usually make it difficult for the guitar to be heard over other instruments

  • lol funny tazmanian devil at the end

  • useful guide, nice dude 5 stars

  • Thanks Mate

  • thank you

  • thnks
