Fuckin boyfriend wants baklava for his b-day. I fucked it up last year. I have 4 days to perfect it for this year. Alton, lay your godly awesome on me!
I have to wonder if that Zeus having great nuts too was just, to use the TVTRopes terms, a double shot of Getting Crap Past the Radar and a Take That to Zeus...
I finally found a major complaint with Alton. If I make Baklava I make my own Phyllo dough. The frozen stuff tastes like baked notebook paper. I never use almonds ever always walnuts and a little bit of pistachios. Sometimes I don't use pistachios at all. Phyllo dough and danish dough is the same thing. We use a pasta machine to start the rolling process.
@nellgwen48 I must highly disagree. Phyllo dough and danish (by which I assume you mean puff pastry) are completely different as puff pastry/danish dough gets its flakiness from pockets of melted fat (usually butter) while Phyllo dough gets its flakiness from layers and layers of the ultra-thin sheets and does not contain nearly as much fat on its own (though is frequently painted with butter) It is a vehicle for flavor so the pastry on its own doesn't taste like much.
OMG, I made this recipe and it's SOOOOO good! Very sweet, you really need to let it sit longer then 8 hrs. in my experience, but soooo worth it! YUMMY! I would make it more often if the nuts weren't so expensive. THANKS AB!!
its difficult to explain pronounciation through words, but il try. he has the stress point in the wrong place. he is stressing the first a in baklava, when it should be kind of between the l and a. i hope that helps.
i know that it is a little thing, but jeez, calm down. im just tellin it to people because i am middle eastern, and its kinda like a mexican person telling others how to say queso if they're pronouncing it qweso.

Unrelated side note: anyone catch the double entendre when AB mentions walnuts' connection to the Roman god Jupiter? "...The Roman version of Zeus, who I'm sure had some great nuts, too."
