The WW2- era German eagle (der Reichsadler) grips a swastika between it's claws. The symbol of the Afrika Korps was a palm tree and a swastika. @porty500 With all respect sir, I don't know what unit your uncle was with or where in Libya ( I was at Tobruk), but my experience was very different. I had good friends die after drinking water from cisterns that were poisoned by retreating Rommel troops. Anyone from our batalion or our group would have happily strangled Rommel if we could have caught the varmint. We did not admire Rommel, we wanted to kill him. We did not under-estimate our enemy, we destroyed them. Rommel fled the field!
@veteranvoice My uncle was an english officer serving with the 9th Australian and was later transferred to the 70th infantry with the Queens own.
He was captured whilst on patrol and always spoke very highly of his captors and the treatment him and his men recieved. His captivity was short lived though as the convoy he was in was strafed and in the confusion him and majority of his men managed to escape and return back to allied lines. He was given a medal for his leadership under fire.

Right there I'll tell you that 8th Army didn't have great equipment but supplies were ok and not for 1 minute did anyone ever talk about being beat, specially by Rommel. So I cannot say about being captured, but we respected our men, not Romme and his. Some things we saw they'd done were plain desperate & mad. You say Rommel fought gentlemans war, well I will guess they're your words, not your uncles.
@veteranvoice Absolutely not, he had many ex-afrika korps friends who he used to visit after the war. He was guest of honour at many reunions in Germany. I remember him visiting Munich several times going to such occasions.
He saw many bad things, don't get me wrong, but he always maintained war was war and never held a grudge.
In fact his only grudge was against Americans who he saw shooting prisoners at Normandy and the japanese for torturing his brother when he was captured in burma.
He held those grudges right until he died last year, he never once knowingly bought any japanese product. He hated the japanese with a vengeance.
The incidents with the Americans shooting POWs always remained his worst regret. Seeing those unarmed soldiers shot, on more than one occasion, left him severely traumatised and he had recurring nightmares for the next 65+ years. He wanted to intervene but feared for his own mens safety, a decision he had to live with for the rest of his life.

The WW2- era German eagle (der Reichsadler) grips a swastika between it's claws. The symbol of the Afrika Korps was a palm tree and a swastika. Most of his WW@ medals would have had a swastika on them (and some pre- war ones, Sudetenland for example). He was perfectly happy with the Nazis when they were bringing Germany success.

During the North African Campaign Rommel insisted that commonwealth PoWs be given water, however there was a shortage, so his troops had to half their own water rations so that there would be enough. Rommel was defeated in a monumental military catastrophe for the Nazi-German state. The battle of Stalingrad followed in 1942 and both contributed to the total degrading of German armed forces, from which they never recovered.

My uncle fought in Libya under Montgomery and he couldn't praise Rommel enough.
NOT ONE POW was ever harmed by his soldiers. He respected the allied soldiers and fought a gentlemans war.
Even when outnumbered 4 to 1 with no ammo, food or fuel he kept Monty at the point of breaking right up to the German withdrawl.
Its a shame the allies couldn't learn a lesson off him. The many POWs killed by the invading allied army remains a well kept secret .....

@porty500 With all respect sir, I don't know what unit your uncle was with or where in Libya ( I was at Tobruk), but my experience was very different. I had good friends die after drinking water from cisterns that were poisoned by retreating Rommel troops. Anyone from our batalion or our group would have happily strangled Rommel if we could have caught the varmint. We did not admire Rommel, we wanted to kill him. We did not under-estimate our enemy, we destroyed them. Rommel fled the field!

@veteranvoice My uncle was an english officer serving with the 9th Australian and was later transferred to the 70th infantry with the Queens own.
He was captured whilst on patrol and always spoke very highly of his captors and the treatment him and his men recieved. His captivity was short lived though as the convoy he was in was strafed and in the confusion him and majority of his men managed to escape and return back to allied lines. He was given a medal for his leadership under fire.

@porty500 Well, I'm not English, but we fought longside with many B&C forces in N.Africa. Right there I'll tell you that 8th Army didn't have great equipment but supplies were ok and not for 1 minute did anyone ever talk about being beat, specially by Rommel. So I cannot say about being captured, but we respected our men, not Romme and his. Some things we saw they'd done were plain desperate & mad. You say Rommel fought gentlemans war, well I will guess they're your words, not your uncles.

@veteranvoice Absolutely not, he had many ex-afrika korps friends who he used to visit after the war. He was guest of honour at many reunions in Germany. I remember him visiting Munich several times going to such occasions.
He saw many bad things, don't get me wrong, but he always maintained war was war and never held a grudge.
In fact his only grudge was against Americans who he saw shooting prisoners at Normandy and the japanese for torturing his brother when he was captured in burma.

He held those grudges right until he died last year, he never once knowingly bought any japanese product. He hated the japanese with a vengeance.
The incidents with the Americans shooting POWs always remained his worst regret. Seeing those unarmed soldiers shot, on more than one occasion, left him severely traumatised and he had recurring nightmares for the next 65+ years. He wanted to intervene but feared for his own mens safety, a decision he had to live with for the rest of his life.

Fact: Rommel took his own life in order to prevent his family from being taken before Hitler's kangaroo court and possibly executed for Rommel's part in the plan to kill Hitler.
Fact: They say a man is judged by his opponents and those British soldiers continue to hold Rommel in high regard to this very day. Even Winston Churchill praised Rommel's efforts to rid Germany of Hitler. Patton also remarked on Rommel, calling his German opponent "A brilliant bastard!"
