i'm just taking a guess here, i think that they didn't put a roof on it so that they wouldn't have to worry about cabin pressures, and oxygen, etc. that'd still be really annoying though. they should have developed some kind of cabin oxygen system, etc.

Three reasons for no roof:

a) buoyancy: Adding a roof would also mean adding 2 tons of ballast, which would make the car on land move like a turtle.

b) Safety: At a depth of 10 meters, the water pressure would keep the door shut with a force of ~4000 kg. Impossible to open in an emergency.

c) Pressure: Water pressure at 10 meter is ~10tons/sq.meter. Instead of the typical 0,7mm sheet metal used for cars the cabin they'd use 1,5 - 2mm at least, which would make the car very heavy again.

Ever heard of oxidizing fulls used for internal combustion engines, for example for Torpedos? Wouldn't be such a big thing to make that work on a car engine underwater I guess. Or just do it like the "5000 ton engineering marvels" do,... by using a snorkel.

e) Calculate the CO2-output of a V8 compared to an electric engine.

OK, got an idea there. If they would fit a rear mounted supercharged v8 big block engine in the rear as well as in the front (yes, 2 engines guys), the car would have enough weight for that they could put on a roof. And hey, it would have enough power under water and on street for it's remaining weight ;-) And btw, it's not something new to have 2 engines in a car, the first 4x4's from Citroen, the 2 CV (yes, the DUCK!!) had 2 engines which could be started individually for rear, front or 4x4

It's just a dumb idea for anything more than an oddball concept car or marketing promotion. I mean, just think about the corrosion factor. There's no way you could get all the salt water out of it after a dive, so it's either got an extremely short lifespan or it only gets used in lakes. It's not much of a wet sub either.

There's no dome for safety reasons, and if it had a dome, the car would need two extra tons just to offset the volume of air inside to remain bouyant. But yeah this concept is quite dumb in my opinion.

mhhhh with an air tight roof the car probably wont sink at all (without much weight).... if you got troubles it is more difficult to escape and if you apen a door all the air will be lost and the car will sink like a giant rock also difficult to recover....
