I'm sorry, but thats a cool car! what's the price? prob. R1600000 or $4598! soz! I'm not American so I don't really know how Americans workout prices! as u can see, I am South African. that explains the R!
i'm just taking a guess here, i think that they didn't put a roof on it so that they wouldn't have to worry about cabin pressures, and oxygen, etc. that'd still be really annoying though. they should have developed some kind of cabin oxygen system, etc.
a) buoyancy: Adding a roof would also mean adding 2 tons of ballast, which would make the car on land move like a turtle.
b) Safety: At a depth of 10 meters, the water pressure would keep the door shut with a force of ~4000 kg. Impossible to open in an emergency.
c) Pressure: Water pressure at 10 meter is ~10tons/sq.meter. Instead of the typical 0,7mm sheet metal used for cars the cabin they'd use 1,5 - 2mm at least, which would make the car very heavy again.
And btw, the 2 engines solution would also favorise the weight distribution ;-) With only one in the back he could do the first underwater wheelie I guess ;-)
Ever heard of oxidizing fulls used for internal combustion engines, for example for Torpedos? Wouldn't be such a big thing to make that work on a car engine underwater I guess. Or just do it like the "5000 ton engineering marvels" do,... by using a snorkel.
They use nuclear reactors or prior to that batteries. A snorkel only works if you're near the surface and on a level plane. Who would buy a submarine car with a max cruise depth of 36 inches?
OK, got an idea there. If they would fit a rear mounted supercharged v8 big block engine in the rear as well as in the front (yes, 2 engines guys), the car would have enough weight for that they could put on a roof. And hey, it would have enough power under water and on street for it's remaining weight ;-) And btw, it's not something new to have 2 engines in a car, the first 4x4's from Citroen, the 2 CV (yes, the DUCK!!) had 2 engines which could be started individually for rear, front or 4x4
Wow. I'm sure this will be useful for.........what exactly? Lord knows I have no other reliable way to cross that bridge to go to work.......Biggest waste of time and money I've ever seen!
i dont understand why everyboby hates this car, its not like theyre forcing u to buy it and if you think about this wont be the last car that goes on the water, its just the first. after will be the second, third and so on and the car will evolve and will be better, faster and more secure(and wet free). dont hate it, be glad somebody introduced the idea on the market so that in the future they will make a better, faster underwater car.
It's just a dumb idea for anything more than an oddball concept car or marketing promotion. I mean, just think about the corrosion factor. There's no way you could get all the salt water out of it after a dive, so it's either got an extremely short lifespan or it only gets used in lakes. It's not much of a wet sub either.
dude thats a great idea(not realy) pretend your getting chased by the cops or something, you see a lake or something drive your car into the water and laugh at the people stalking you, hahahha sucka
i agree with the dude bellow me this is stupid i mean who would buy i car so he can go fishing in it and get laughed at and who would buy it to just drive it on the road since there is already a car just like that but my guess it hates water!
that's the stupidest thing i've ever seen. when i first heard about this, i thought the interior would be water proof, but the stupid cockpit stays open, and you have to have scuba gear! wow, spending millions of dollars on something so STUPID...
im sorry but thats dumb as hell. if it was a real under water car you woulda made it so a dome goes over the people in the car so they dont get all wet.
There's no dome for safety reasons, and if it had a dome, the car would need two extra tons just to offset the volume of air inside to remain bouyant. But yeah this concept is quite dumb in my opinion.
mhhhh with an air tight roof the car probably wont sink at all (without much weight).... if you got troubles it is more difficult to escape and if you apen a door all the air will be lost and the car will sink like a giant rock also difficult to recover.... XD It seems funny but hard to handle and sloooooooow
First. Awesome car. Second. to submerge 2 cubic meters of air you would need to add 4000 lbs to the weight of the car. that is why it is a convertible.(and for safety reasons. third, there is a built in scuba mask/breather for air.
this is just stupid. whats the point if it is darn hard to control and it doesn't even have a submarine like capsule... who wants to have to use a regulator?
Guys, it's just a concept to prove some technology... Data: Top Speed: > 120 km/h 0-80 km/h: > 7.1 sec Top Speed in water: > 6 km/h Top Speed under water: > 3 km/h Dive depth: 10 m Engines Street: Electric Output: 54 kW @ 4'500 /min Torque: 160 NM @ 1'500 /min Water: Rear propellers, electric Output: 2 x 0.8 kw Dive: Front Jet powered, electric Output: 2 x 3.6 kW Rotinor Batteries: Lithium-Ionic (6 x 48 Volts)
It's an awsome looking car and it's even more cooler that it can go in the water. But It does need to go faster I mean only 3mph and even less when under water (1mph). However I can't wait for this car to get better.
Who cares wheather it's emmissions free! The fact is, it's a great car and I love it! They'll improve on this now and just get better and better! I bet in a hundred years time. They'll be a good few of these around?!

Three reasons for no roof:
a) buoyancy: Adding a roof would also mean adding 2 tons of ballast, which would make the car on land move like a turtle.

"oxidizing fulls[sic!]." You clearly don't know jack about physics.
Please calculate:
a) the buoyancy of an air pocket 5' by 4' by 4'
b) the weight of 2 big block engines (Hint: a>b)
c) Oxidizing fuels, part 1: Oxygen replacement. Calculate the volume of nitrous oxide needed for a ten minute dive
d) Oxidizing fuels, part 2: Hypergolic fuels. Calculate the cost of 1 gallon hydrazine.
e) Calculate the CO2-output of a V8 compared to an electric engine.
Now go and do your homework.
afriend2003 4 years ago
