Gents!! This was the NHL back in the day. Your strengh and toughness was evaluated through your abilities to fight through the checks. Of course this included the hooking and holding. Modern day players ( Sid-Ovi) would have experienced problems back then. Gretzky learned to skate away from the play but pass the puck through.Sid and Ovechkin may have found ways too..but thus is your Gary Bettman NHL. Fast, and very dangerous.

I agree with your overall statement about having to fight through checks, and it being as a whole a positive part of the game. However, I think someone like Ovechkin without a doubt could have adjusted himself to play in that atmosphere. He's big, he's strong, he's fast, and he's a real warrior on the ice. Like Gretzky and Mario, these kinds of players find a way to get around any obstacle, playing style, or system designed to stop them.
