Mars Volta is probably my favourite band... but Cedric is probably one of the worst singers I have ever heard in my life. He can pull it off in the studio, but I have watched probably over 100 live clips and not once has he sung on key. No matter if it's low, high, quiet, loud, or whether he's high or sober. He is blessed with incredible range, but execution-wise, he is a god awful singer.
one of the more powerful tracks on the album. just wished it had like a few minutes of fast punk rock stuff in the middle of it like his playing in de-loused lol. awesome song still!!
he's fallen off a bit lately (watch the performance of Cygnus where he has to drop an octave) but then again, the vocals on this album work for him right now
poor Pridgen. I hope they find a permanent drummer
all that crazy drumming on goliath was omar's work-he's the composer in the group so the music live/studio is played to his liking. i agree w/ you that it was kinda over-the-top. have you seen these guys live yet?
Agree for the square. A bit of a letdown after Bedlam, but like all their albums, it reveals itself over time and that's where they're brilliant. This also struck me as a stop-gap EP kinda thing, even if it's 50 minutes that's short for them; but a lot of recycling here and not so fully cooked.
So it boggled my mind when peep would say it's their best. But judging from purely the singing angle, I can now see how someone would say that.
Random meaning that he played some fills that went out of time and were just flat out crazy. His work on Octahedron is still good, it's just not nearly as crazy as what he did on The Bedlam. I'm not seeing what I said that could've offended you or any other fan. I'm a huge TMV fan. I'm just stating the difference between the albums that stuck out most to me. This one is more laid back and that's fine. I like it. Chill
i was drunk mate, and thats sometimes the point. Thomas is an amazing drummer.. his chops are beyond 95% of all modern drummers.. the only two people i believe who can keep up with him are brann dailor and jon theodore..
He never goes out of time. He plays polyrhythmic parts with Omar. I can see how it would be confusing, but I guess you have to be a musician to some extent to understand what they do(not trying to sound elitist or anything).
I actually am a drummer. I have actually never heard the term polyrhythmic before though. But that is basically what I meant. I mean, he never goes out of time with the song, it just doesn't match up with the main part of the song and sounds like he's going crazy on the drums almost like he doesn't know what he's doing. Saying he went out of time wasn't the best way to put it, i guess. He stays with the song, it just doesn't match up with everything else. It's really good drumming though. Talent
If you're a drummer and you haven't heard the term poly rhythmic I would strongly suggest you start studying some sound music theory, otherwise you'll be playing 4/4 time signature slop beats for the rest of your drumming life.
@pathologicalglances I may not have heard of polyrhythmic, but I have heard of Hemiolic patterns. Which they sound as though they'd be the same thing. And no, I haven't studied music theory yet because I'm still in high school. But you're wrong, I've played time signatures from 3/2 to 12/16 and anything in between. Sorry I don't know every term for drumming in the book.
A-freakin-men. Thomas finally calmed down and is allowing a groove to develop. All of Bedlam just seemed to wank-off to me, like he was trying to play every part as fast as possible. That was one of the things I loved about Jon; he could settle down into these sick grooves without battering you with 900000 beats.
The songs on Bedlam are faster and heavier in general, The verses of Metatron, Iyena, most of Goliath and Agadez, to name a few are pretty straightforward grooves. I think he's a smart player and isn;t just amazing at fast crazy shit, but can groove when needed.
Its a mellower, slower tempo record.. so if they look bored to you its probably because they can't jump around and dance to the new material like they can with most of their other stuff.
yeah youre right. they probably love playing the same shit over and over and over again, roulette dares for 500 shows... you're an idiot, this is their new shit. they are probably so excited to bust it out. maybe you should just stick to at the drive in
@closestkingdom I was loving every mintue of it------in my opinion they only get better----though i did prefer the jon theadore jams better------maybe it was the drugs----but hearing new stuff played for the first time live before anywhere is always the best!!!

Pridgren wasn't kicked out, he left TMV because he said he was young and he didn't want to work with TMV for the rest of his life.

oh sorry, he was kicked out about two weeks ago. No one knows why, but apparently it happened during soundcheck right before a show

it's ok. it's not nearly as random as The Bedlam, but Bedlam took a lot more talent to play. his drumming is still decent throughout this album.
USC4ever46 2 years ago
what the fuck does random have to do with anything? his drumming on the new album is sonically looser, but theres a lot more of a groove than before

the thing with this song is thats its not that hard to play.. its a lot harder to write something like that..
i guess bedlam was more "muscles"
ochtaedron is more "brain"
but i love both

It's a pretty standard spanish waltz, but I think the backing is what makes the song really good. Seems it was written for Cedric though.
