He would respond to his name and take walks on a leash like a dog might, yet had the ability to climb trees and was exceptionally curious like a cat. However there were other traits, a STRONG affection for anything sweet, a desire to find and hoard anything that interested him, and a knack for getting into mischief that was all 'Coon.

@neishaizhere09 wildlife conservation baby raccoons who lose there moms go there (if a hunter noticed the racoon he's killed had babys they take them to that) you can own or rehab them (those raccoons are owned by the state)... but if your county doesn't allow them as pets. go to the Federal level, register the little guy in an educational program, show your little guy for schools 3xs a year, and voila! legal pet racoon! a federally lisensed pet raccoon at that.

We had three as pets when I was a kid, and an uncle had several over the years. My uncle was a logger and he and others on his crew would take orphaned baby coons home and raise them. They are fun pets, but require a lot of time and patience. Funny, protective, highly intelligent and they get into EVERYTHING. I've seen them untie knots, for example.

FWIW, I've seen good hunting dogs utterly destroyed by an injured or cornered coon. They can be some real badasses. No kidding. This one was nice.

If you cant handle a super mischeivious permanent 2 yr old kid at least for 10 years, a pet coon would not be a good pet for you.

Also if your not willing to give 100% of time, a coon is a bad choice also.

Coons are like kids, super bright, problem solving midgits, that need alot of attention, and dont like strangers much in their turf. Very protective at times.

They live 10 plus years with good care, easily even more, and its not a pet you can pass off.

Think first before getting one!

I hope people who have racoons realize what JustinP explains: Racoons have a stronger bite than  a pitbull and so anyone should remember that the racoon can hurt their dogs I don't care what breed.

All animals can be unpredictable and as with about 90% of all dogs, when treated poorly or in the wrong hands they can be deadly. My pit is one of the best dogs I've ever had and she plays with my 3yr old all the time along with our other dogs.

@rocksinoo I don't own that one but the ones I do own are cuddly with attitude, meaning if they want to then it's ok and if not you better leave them alone. AS for pets they are wonderful if you don't mind being bitten from time to time and scratched all the time. Also you have to raccoon proof your house or were ever you keep them. Like I read once you can keep them in a cage but then you don't have a pet you have a wild animal in a cage.

Most people will get rid of theirs before a year old because they are to much to handle and that is really a shame, because most will turn them loose in the wild.. Then you have let a animal loose that can not fen for itself because it was raised by humans and does not know the wild. So please don't get one unless you are really ready to give up your life for the next 10-20 years to take care of these beautiful and smart critters.

@gino7lord I have seen dozens, maybe a few hundred pitbulls like this with not an ounce of aggression in them. Every single pitbull, EVERYONE with out exception I have seen with a violent/unpredictable temperment has either been specifically trained to act aggressive, been raised by an irresponsible owner, or was abandoned. And just about ANY dog for that matter that falls into one of those three categories can turn out the same way, its just easier for people to punish the breed, not the deed.

@gino7lord It really depends on how they are raised. They can be in a "good" environment, and still have problems coping. Dogs are complex beings just like humans and need a certain set of factors to be mentally stable. Sometimes people forget they are animals and start treating them like little humans. This is wrong. Dogs need structure, guidance, and purpose, no matter how menial it may be. They have excess energy that must be released or it will may come out in negative and even violent ways.

I love pit bull's, I have two Egyptian Pit's that are really docile. I hate how a lot of people look down on the breed and say that their bad dogs to own. I've only been bitten by mine once and thats because he had a fishing lure caught in his mouth and was in pain. They've never hurt any other animal either, though they do like to make the outside cat's run so they can chase them lol. They're like kids, if you raise them right they'll turn out fine. Bad dogs aren't born they're made.
